June 30, 201312 yr Does anyone think that Prepar3d will catch on like MS FSX ? Is it our new flight sim? Regards Lamar Wright
June 30, 201312 yr Commercial Member I suspect that with V2 it will. Those developers "in the known" have expressed their excitement about the upcoming new version (Orbx comes to mind). Brandon Filer
July 1, 201312 yr I would also say yes, but I say that with the realization that XPX also brings a new level of simming to the community. It's to our advantage to have two competing platforms, I hope that Lockheed Martin fixes the licensing issues for those who currently do not fall within them. Unfortunately, currently you must either be a student or have some sort of justification for the professional edition such as a pilot's certificate to "keep your skills current". The average simmer doesn't have a legal way to currently use the sim which is a real shame. I have good feelings though towards v2. Tom "I just wanna tell you both: good luck. July 1, 201312 yr I have not flown FSX for over nine months but spend about 8 hours per day flying P3D. I believe that the current version has already surpassed FSX in both performance and reliability. I purchased the "professional" version and consider it has been real value for money. Your computer needs to meet the accepted standards for a gaming machine to get the best out of the program. The FSX add-ons that have not ported over to P3D have been few and far between. As a final thought Lockheed Martin is supporting P3D, MS is not supporting FSX. Cheers, Mac
July 1, 201312 yr I've not used version 1.4 in a while since using DX10 in FSX. When version 2.0 comes out this will be supporting DX11. so will probably give this a shot. X-Plane 12 and MSFS2020 🙂 System specs: Windows 11 Pro 64-bit, Ubuntu Linux 20.04 i7-13700KF Gigabyte Z790 RTX-4060-Ti , 32GB RAM 1X 2TB M2 for X-Plane 12, 1x256GB SSD for OS. 1TB drive MSFS2020
July 1, 201312 yr I definitely migrated. In between I also tested DX10 mode for FSX, and really liked it, but I had some problems and gave up eventually... P3D is right now my preferred civil flight simulation platform. Default World scenery is more than acceptable for me, weather works better than in FSX and together with AS2012 is very satisfying, I am able to use most of my FSX stuff with it, CTD-free, and stuttering free even at low FPS (my machine is far from a top rig...). XPX is really promissing , and I always , get enthusiastic when I decide to use it, but I always end up rather unsatisfied with some of it's awkward limitations / bugs, that torque bug being probably the worst, soon followed by the wrong wind on ground effects physics, the lack of good modeling of navaids (range for instance), the tile-based local scenery, poor ATC and detailed systems mdoelling, and add-ons, even the most expensive, still leaving a LOT to be desired, except those by X-Aviation!!! and Felis Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
July 1, 201312 yr I'm waiting for V2.0 before deciding. We are adding some features to the model format for 2.0 though so 2.0 models won't work in P3D 1.x, ESP, or FSX. Older models should still work in P3D 2.0 however. [My emphasis] http://www.prepar3d.com/forum-5/?mingleforumaction=viewtopic&t=2870.0#postid-12476 Gerry Howard
July 1, 201312 yr Author Thank you for your replies and thoughts. I have been with MS since way back when (started flying with keyboard) and their first FS looked like a arcade game. That said, I started this thred because I would like to see what other simmers thought about P3D and I guess the main reason is because I am getting a new top of the line computer (my last probably at my age, Haaaaa) and since MS stopped supporting FSX, though now is the time to switch to a new supported sim. I believe when V2 comes out it will seal the deal for me. Other thoughts? Regards Lamar Wright
July 1, 201312 yr When does P3D v2.0 come out? I'm interested as well since it's kind of difficult for me to get back into X-Plane with some of the limitations. Does anyone know if the following add-ons will work for P3D: OpusFX EZDok Cam (EZCA) TrackIR PMDG 747/737NGX/777 Carenado Planes REX+OD GSX SweetFX FS2Crew Ultimate Traffic 2 Redux 3D Lights Accufeel OrbX Realscenery Megascenery Aerosoft Airbus X Extended Aerosoft scenery and airports Flytampa scenery and airports At it's current state, is P3D much more stable than FSX? I'm getting tired of OOM, and random CTD's and stuff while flying. Does the current version fix al these issues? If so, it may be worth purchasing and makes more sense to get P3D because it will work with most of my existing FSX add ons. Which makes this a much better choice than switching to a whole new platform such as XPX. Which I will have to start buying all new add ons and stuff for. As far as when, no one really knows except that LM is actively working on the software. P3D is a lot more stabled than FSX, the tech gurus for software around here should be able to shed light on just how that is accomplished. Current version of P3D is multi core and high memory aware which should fix your OOM, I have only 8gigs of ram on my gaming computer and I have never run into an OOM. As stated above, P3Dv2 Should retain compatability with FSX sp2 addons. Tom "I just wanna tell you both: good luck. We're all counting on you."
July 1, 201312 yr That sounds like what I've been waiting for. I think I'll buy the academic version. I'm getting really fed up with FSX. Is the original development team that made FSX now working for Lockheed Martin? And why did Microsoft just kill off the development of FSX and not continue on making better? Was there some sort of issue that made them stop? How large is the download of P3D? MS shut down the ACES studio back with the financial crisis of 09, Flight was developed in 2010 with a new groupd names the Microsoft Flight development team under Microsoft Studios.. Some good reading is here:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Studios and a good blog post about it is here: http://squawkbox.ca/news/ P3D I believe is 5gigs split into 3 packages. I have 30mbps download and I finished all three downloads in about 40 minutes. Heres a nice calculator to estimate how long it will take you: http://www.numion.com/calculators/time.html Tom "I just wanna tell you both: good luck. We're all counting on you."
July 1, 201312 yr Commercial Member To me, P3D is already FSnext. P3D 2.0 will put the final nail in the coffin for good ol' FSX (may she rest in peace). P3D 2.0 beta is projected to be in beta by late Summer, with a possible release by years end. Should they decide to add a front-end launcher that could post-pone everything for a release in 2014. (pure speculation based on tidbits of info I have snooped around for). Intel i9-12900KF, Asus Prime Z690-A MB, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, (3) SK hynix M.2 SSD (2TB ea.), 16TB Seagate HDD, Gigabyte GeForce 5080 RTX, Corsair iCUE H70i AIO Liquid Cooler, UHD/Blu-ray Player/Burner (still have lots of CDs, DVDs!) Windows 10, (hold off for now on Win11), EVGA 1300W PSUNetgear 1Gbps modem & router, (3) 27" 1440 wrap-around displaysFull array of Bravo, Saitek and GoFlight hardware for the cockpit. Varjo and HP VR headsets for mixed reality.
July 1, 201312 yr Until PMDG aircraft work in P3D (don't know if they do or not) I won't be making the move towards P3D. I would like to however, as I have about had it with the already ancient piece of software that is FSX! If I do switch to P3D, it will surely be the next version. Or new product of P3D.
July 1, 201312 yr PMDG 737 NGX works in P3D, I've seen lots of videos on youtube of it. I am pretty sure at this point that I will move over to P3D with the rest of the FSX crew. Don't think I will stick with X-Plane as there are still a few things that I don't like about it and development is extremely slow. Plus I have invested in a lot of add-ons for FSX that will also work with P3D. Seems like a logical choice to me. Thanks for the info t_berg!
