July 17, 201312 yr "can be" doesn't mean "will be", or more importantly, "will be in the foreseeable future". The other way around, well, I think people in 2006 would be really surprised seeing what's possible now in FSX. ^_^ On the other hand, something like FTX Global for X-plane? Why not. I think that idea already crossed John Venema's mind But I also think that the discussion here drifted far away from the original topic. I have quotes from John (from a long time ago) where in his forum he emphasized on the fact that Orbx was a MS platform ONLY. Since he is reading and posting here lets all ask him if FTX Global for X-plane is something he will do, "crossed John Venema's mind" does not mean "will be". So the question is asked, and no answer will be more satisfying but the one from the horse's mouth.
July 17, 201312 yr Commercial Member Vindication for the PMDG method of release date disclosure. Orbx never gives out absolute release dates, never have, never will. With FTX Global I have posted regular developer blog updates on our forums and said we were "aiming" for June 15th, then July 15th and now next week. That's called effective communication, not anything less or more. Orbx is not a company with a reputation for long delays with *any* product in our short six year history. On the other hand, something like FTX Global for X-plane? Why not. I think that idea already crossed John Venema's mind But I also think that the discussion here drifted far away from the original topic. Yes indeed; how we got onto Photoreal and XPX is anyone's guess. FTX Global for X-Plane? We won't do it ourselves, we don't have time or the inclination. I'm meeting with Aerosoft next week though , maybe they want to do it for us? (shrug).. If there's a sufficient customer market and money to be made, why not? It's basically a licensing exercise more than a technical one. So, I heard the new DX10 scenery autofix will be coming out soon (tried it out a few months ago but too many grey/blank texture planes so gave up) -- http://stevesfsxanalysis.wordpress.com/2013/06/21/dx10-scenery-fixer/ Will there be any issues with FTX global in DX10 mode? No it's just replacing default FSX textures, so how will that cause issues? Cheers, John Venema
July 17, 201312 yr No it's just replacing default FSX textures, so how will that cause issues? As quoted from the DX10 scenery website: "The aim of the product is to resolve the issues that cause some add on scenery to appear grey in Microsoft Flight Simulator X DX10 Preview mode. It can also deal with add on aircraft that similarly appear grey but support in this case is more limited and has limitations when it comes to night lighting." Soarbywire - Avionics Engineering
July 17, 201312 yr John nice to see you posting here would be nice to see more of it :good: Rich Sennett
July 17, 201312 yr some add on scenery Except that FTX Global isn't an add on scenery it is just replacement textures. Mike Mann
July 17, 201312 yr Yes, I understand it is replacement textures, but add on scenery also replaces textures and the DX10 bug where scenery turns grey affects...textures! I will take John's word for it that there are no issues with it in DX10 -- although I am not running in that DX mode at this stage, I hope to do so again in the near future. Soarbywire - Avionics Engineering
July 17, 201312 yr Commercial Member but add on scenery also replaces textures and the DX10 bug where scenery turns grey affects...textures! Addon Sceneries (such as airport ones) that have issues with DX10 in general don't replace any textures, they just have their own often in incompatible format for DX10 I believe. FTX Global and other ground texture replacements shouldn't really have any issues with DX10.
July 17, 201312 yr "FTX Global and other ground texture replacements shouldn't really have any issues with DX10" Exactly Rich Sennett
July 17, 201312 yr So, it's literally automatic. That's incredible. I'm assuming it will ask before doing it, but that makes it so easy. Stan Yeppers, it will be that easy. Essentially, anything that is in the default texture folder, when you FIRST run the Global installer will be seen by that installer as your DEFAULT texture setup. It will add a .bck to that folder and it will stay unaltered, and dormant...not being seen by FSX. The installer will then create a new 'default' folder, with all the ORBX goodies. If you wished to go back, you would run the uninstaller and all it would do is delete the 'default' folder it created, and remove the .bck from your original Texture folder, and then FSX would see it and do its thing. Quite simple, and painless for you. The one thing you would have to make sure of though, is that you had the ORBX CENTRAL software with ORBX GLOBAL clicked BEFORE you uninstalled. That would be the only active thing to do on your part.
July 17, 201312 yr OpenLC for South America! Can't wait for that. Hope it's finally the time for my Country to have correct textures, and look like it should! Hope it doesn't that that long to get it ready. Alexis Mefano
July 17, 201312 yr OpenLC for South America! Can't wait for that. Hope it's finally the time for my Country to have correct textures, and look like it should! Hope it doesn't that that long to get it ready. Agree!! I also have family in Brazil also an i can't wait to see what Orbx has done ! July 17, 201312 yr Author i'm looking foward too to see the world differently even though i can't see any differences between the textures and autogen of the cities from usa to europe and asia. they seem to be the same except for the ones in middle east and africa.
July 17, 201312 yr Commercial Member Actually we will now have the FTXG installer give you the choice to backup and specify a location to backup to. This will allow you to offload the old textures to an external HD for instance and then only have less than 2GB increase for the install. If you say 'no' to the backup option the installer will just overwrite Scenery\World\Texture. We actually have to overwrite the default textures because we discovered UTX stores some of its unique textures in the folder so we cannot move them. Cheers, John Venema
July 17, 201312 yr "This will allow you to offload the old textures to an external HD " Very nice luv that option Rich Sennett
July 17, 201312 yr Funny you said that, is this thread not about improving FSX, when was FSX released again? Is XPX evolving as fast as I (we) would like to see it evolve.....no...but it's evolving with some stuff you won't see in FSX, take the 64-bit as a example, FSX or XPX is not perfect and will never be. Everything we see in FSX and is missing in XPX can be added to it, the other way around can't be done. Yes, Alain...but with what you are saying here...if anybody ever converted the FSX engine even without adding to it, but only to convert to 64 bit...and an end to O.O.M's for everyone..it would be a run-away seller! FSX has great features, has a very well-enabled A.I. module, A.T.C. model, and eye-popping texture features (ORBX, etc). I'll bet you that if FSX'ers got a 64 bit engine...they would be a totally happy camp, and look no further.... XPX has the best night operation simulation on the planet. It has the best road traffic and its network on the planet. If FSX could be updated with my two XPX mentioned features, it would be a flight sim for the next 5 years to beat. But...if Laminar comes up with a mature A.I./graphics (seasonal ORBX'ish look)/A.T.C. solution of its own...then FTX could be possibly shelved, as I am thinking of retiring GEX as early as next week. For now, though, FSX is viable alongside XPX, and each can be fired up for what 'you want to do in that session'. That's how I run my needs, anyway. FS9 included in the mix. 32GB for Holland! LOL! Good luck with that How many petabytes of fridge sized disk farms will you need to cover the globe? FTXG has an 8GB footprint, and that is 5 seasons, autogen, night lighting etc. If you replace the default FSX textures without backing up, it has less than a 2GB footprint. So for 1/16th the size of a Holland photoreal, we cover the globe. Then with openLC there may be another 12-16GB of unique new textures to feed into the custom landclass from OSM and other sources, for a worldwide custom LC simulator with unique textures, again for less than a photoreal Holland. Wow....let me daub at the drool running down my chin as I read this... Sold.....
