Orbx Is a Joke of a Company

Featured Replies

JV has now posted a rant in the forum blaming the customers for his deceptive marketing of Vector. He says we've been spoiled with FTX regions and need to shut up. Really? Why do we we continue to buy products from this joke of a company? I no longer will.

Well... Attitude is one thing quality is another. From what I saw vector together with decent mesh works very good. It is just lack of proper information before buying this soft which hurts people most. Won't comment on what JV said as from what I've read he has really weird attitude. But just because chef behaves weird it doesn't mean I won't eat a meal if it's tasty.

I knew this awhile ago and stopped buying their products..  I've never seen such a large group of people get talked to like scumbags by the owner of a company then throw cash at him the next time he flashes shiny products.

Remember he is just human like the rest of us, even if he is at times more rude,  He seems to be like a lot of us who at times love to rant when we get ###### peed off..

Yeah I agree, I dont purchase from them anymore due to that. The stuff they make might most be good stuff but his responses to customers really turn me off.

I'm actually glad I fly tubes so the majority of their products dont really cater to my type of flying anyway.

JV will state that it is his Dutch heritage that makes him outspoken, but I am half Irish and half Scottish, but I still have to pay for my own drinks.

I can understand the frustration at simmers who do not make themselves fully informed and then make claims about being "deceived" or alleging deception - that is one serious allegation to make. It seems to me (after being in this hobby for 30-odd years) that some simmers like to dish it out, thinking it is their "right as a customer", but sadly have a glass jaw when they receive a response in kind.

In the end it is the choice of the individual on what not to buy from whom, but I suspect it is like water off a duck's back to some big developers - and I think that a certain company that makes great Boeing aircraft would have similar feelings towards this minority of vocal individuals.

I think I found the post you were referring to. Sounds like he's hit breaking point with this product and just had enough. The number of complaints and bugs appearing on their site, as well as posts on various other forums is bound to be piling up the pressure, and he's feeling it. It's obvious this product was released too early and people are confused about which mesh is required etc.

He might own the company, but there are some very talented developers working for them, and I don't think anybody has any gripe with them. I think it's best it's just left at that, people like JV can't be easily beaten down :-)

When you have to resort to copy and pasting hightlighted excerpts from an instruction manual and reading every single "teaser" and whatever other nonesense JV writes in a forum to understand you need addtional stuff...  It's a bit vague...

Most customers aren't F5ing forum posts and proof reading re-release updates from JV..  They stroll to FSS "Ohh, Vector, and I need FTX Global Base, AWESOME! I'm buying!!!"  Then find out in a very rude way when they need support they should have read 18 posts and an instruction manual first to figure out they also need Mesh to make everything look right.

JV lives in this delusional world that all his customers read that forum of his.. Search for the world "Mesh" on the store page..  Exactly.. It doesn't exist.

How many of you guys who are crying wolf over a product some of you haven't even bought have checked for the availability of a freeware SRTM mesh for the regions you're interested in? There are quite a few out there, just sayin'...

I can understand the underlying point - a sticker on the product page saying 'recommended to use with a mesh product' would probably have been a good idea. However, some people are blowing this way out of proportion - I bought Vector, I don't own the global mesh, and I can still fly the sim. And its looking good!

Oh and BTW, I just bought the Flight1 King Air recently, which itself was about the price of the mesh for the entire globe. So even though it might not have been clearly enough advertised for some people, it isn't the end of the world, as far as cost for FSX addons goes. And again - go check for freeware mesh, there is quite a lot of that around actually.

Lucky for us fsx/p3d simmers those who like to vote with thier wallets all the time will cause the slow death of the sim on those platforms and push up prices for the rest of us ^_^

Can anyone name me one complex addon that has been released in the last 5 years that has never needed patches because i cant think of one ??

We do seem to forget that a complex addon will need some help from the users if they find an issue and they can help by doing a bug report but ranting is becoming the norm which might just prove JV right.. we have been spoilt and we no longer have the abilty to ask for help with a problem and we prefer to act worse than a child.

Bugs are annoying and can break our sim but its not the end of the world and with a small amount of effort on our side we can make it better for all simmers

Sorry, but that is the risk of impulsive buying - I've done it before, but have learned to try and do some due diligence - sometimes with mixed results. I am not taking anyone's side here, but what I am saying is that simmers are quick to pull the trigger and make allegations (sometimes unfounded, sometimes even slanderous) that they would never make in person because they think it is their "right".

In addition, if I am not mistaken, the manual for the product in question was made available some time ago. This is the common practice these days so would be first port of call should some due diligence had been undertaken.

I'm not at all condoning treating customers badly; that is a pretty sure-fire method of not having to be a retailer any longer. JV is very lucky that Orbx has little competition in an area where us simmers are more than willing to throw money at any thing they think will improve their simulation experience. [edit: I've since reread the JV post in question on my desktop rather than my phone - big screens are simply better for perspective than small. Although his post is rather harsh, I don't even think it's treating customers badly - I see it more as rather poorly expressed frustration.  A lot of what he is claiming about trying to educate and make everything clear months in advance is perfectly true.]

That said, I think people are making too much of this mesh requirement thing. It's only something that makes sense - improved vector data goes hand in hand with improved elevation data. That, and anytime they showed a screenshot that used mesh, they always mentioned it.

I also don't think that you can have a perfect release of a product on this scale. The explanation that there is simply too much area covered to be thoroughly beta tested prior to release is perfectly valid in this case, in my opinion. At some point, you have to release it and depend on your customer base to report flaws. Even in the smaller areas that UT / UTX covers, it wasn't perfect on first release.
