January 31, 201412 yr Author I vote an emphatic no. You have to assume that eventually, the images will expire or disappear. They do too here. After 90 days, they're gone. Tom, is the impact of the image resizing on the servers quantifiable? No. I am not able to pull that data.
January 31, 201412 yr The only drawback to embedding images from links to image hosting sites is the size of the images (I use the free image hosting service at flightsim -http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshotsv2/). It's not going to hurt AVSIM having huge embedded images but some members may not have a fast high-speed internet connection. That could make visiting forums such as the AVSIM Screenshot Forum or the real Aviation Photos Forum less desirably to some as it may take some time for the images to download and appear. Maybe we need some mechanism to warn members to be considerate of their fellow members when linking large images. Best regards, Jim Young | AVSIM Online! - Simming's Premier Resource! January 31, 201412 yr I have no problem using an external host for posting images. Whatever benefits Avsim, I'm all for. jime James D. Edwards
February 1, 201412 yr Commercial Member Broken? No, it is operating just has we have selected it to operate. The system resizes images hosted elsewhere to meet our size limitations. We already prune images hosted our servers. So, I am not sure what you are telling us other than our system is "broken" (which it isn't)? I can't decide if you're being awkward or not... The first part of my post (that you didn't quote) addresses your problem of server load with respect to resizing images hosted elsewhere. Just tell the forum code to display the image at a smaller size as I demonstrated. It requires no processing by AVSIM for this at all. Why you download the file from a remote host to resize it is what I was referring to as "broken". It is entirely unecessary, and hits not only server load (which you're concerned about) but also network bandwidth, which from the requirement to lock out guest users, is also a problem. Whoever told you this was a good solution to handling images is mistaken; designed that way or not - it makes no sense. Best regards, Robin.

February 1, 201412 yr I think it's a pretty good idea. Image hosting takes up a lot of server resources, bandwith, etc. I can understand people's reluctance to make a change which will involve creating an account for image hosting, uploading it and finally posting on AVSIM, but if it helps reduce workload on the servers it's well worth it. Yes buts its a hassle to have to make another account I already have over 50 accounts at various places. Since it seems like you have to make an account at every site you visit these days. Why not just impose a max amount of images per user per day and limit image size to 300kb this image for example is only 130kb ATP MEL,CFI,CFII,MEI. Type Ratings B-737, ERJ-190,ERJ-170
February 1, 201412 yr I say why not, I actually don't know of any other forum that allows image uploading, so I am used to uploading them to storage sites and linking here... February 1, 201412 yr i think its a great idea . cause i guess it'll reduce server work load . and by the way there are many websites that you can load photos and share easily like Dropbox . so Go Ahead Faisal Altheyab

February 3, 201412 yr I welcome the proposal 100%... anything that helps keep the forum running better has to be a good thing. Its the way I've always posted images and I can't imagine the process being beyond anyone that can use a flight simulator.

February 6, 201412 yr Only thing I can think of, and I'm not that familiar with how it all works, is that if you link to other hosting sites, in future years, a useful image in a topic (esp. a support-type issue) may or may not be there down the line. I've seen online forums where that is the case, with threads of info from a few years back that is good, but the reference imagery now inaccessible. Not sure there's anything that can permanently be done about that, but certainly, maybe, identifying a "preferred hosting site" elsewhere (as the ORBX forums do, for instance) and then having a post here on "How To" at the top of a Screenshots forum might work? Again, each system is different, so what seems to be working for orbxsystems.com/forum may not be relevant in this case. But certainly offloading Avsim is getting critical at this point, for a variety of reasons, so I'm for that.
