If an infant/child screams or has a temper tantrum on a flight, it would make sense to treat the situation the same as if it were an adult - divert the flight to the nearest safe landing strip under military fighter escort. After all, it COULD be a diversion for a hi-jacking or terrorist attack. Eject, arrest and charge the parents of the children as appropriate when the aircraft lands. This would hopefully ensure only suitably behaved children fly.

I remember in many of my flights drunk adults were screaming nonsence, occasionally crying or in rare cases cheering and laughting... Doesn't cause flight diversions...

.. and I've been on two flights where fist-fights broke out between passengers and there was no diversion.... but it's not like that not anymore, at least around here.

But, I was being facetious, as the 'LOL' smiley was intended to convey. I have kids too!

Actually, Howard was on the right track.

1.  You take a pacifier, poke a small hole in the sucking end.

2.  Then, take it apart and stuff cotton into it.

3.  Next, soak the cotton with JD, or your favorite whiskey.

4.  Put the thing back together again.

5.  Stuff it into l'enfant's mouth.

6.  Order a stiff one from the flight attendant for yourself.

7.  Relax. . .

Works every time.

However as you described, we did notice people coughing and sneezing about 2 hours into the flight and as the baby was doing it before us

They most likely had the flu or  cold well before  they boarded  the flight since it usually take around 48 hours or so to get infected by some  one whoes got the flu or cold.

Yes, I got this explanation from another member of this thread. Hence it's possible the disease was caught up in our earlier IL-62 flight or even in Petersburg. How the other passengers got it, who knows. Maybe we were an unlucky bunch who sat next to the constantly screaming baby.

But if kids annoy young people so much that they suddeny use phsysical violence something is clearly wrong with the practice. My half sister is not the only one because I asked on a Russian and Bulgarian travel forum and apparently this happens a lot. People don't have as much patience as they used to. A western flight would be diverted, the rest of the world doesn't care. The relatively rare but not so uncommon accidents as the above however is not the only reason as there is perfectly calm people who get annoyed by the 10 hour constant screaming as well. Why else would certain airlines such as Air Asia introduce childfree flights? I read the news and some US airlines are beginning with this practice as well.

I don't understand most of the people on this poll as it's not really about banning babies completely, but about to introduce childfree areas and certain childfree flights for adults who would like to pay extra for their sleep.

I'm not bringing my bottle of vodka with me to a public flight, then please do not bring your baby into my sleep.

I can't understand why people fly with their baby on holiday. This year i flew to rome with Lufthansa and it was very annoying with a little infant screaming the whole flight. And yes they did a citytrip in a very hot city in august. For me this is irresponsible and this is just one of my experiences.

My best flight so far was a US-Airways flight from Munic to Philadelphia. Child and baby free flight with total silence during the whole flight. The returnflight also was very relaxing.

So yes, little babies and infants should be banned from certain flights! Most of them are unnecessary flights with irresponsible parents.

Infants and babies need a regulated daily routine and not a stressful flight!

And what about a "baby defender" now ?

There are many devices that will enable you to isolate yourself from noise, even the loudest baby...

So no. No ban.

There's a lot of babies around this thread who freak out if their sleep is interrupted. Seriously, if you can't function well after missing a few hours sleep then you have bigger problems than screaming babies on flights. You better hope real life never hits you hard.

I'll tell you a story... There was a baby, about five months old on a four hour trip across the Tasman. And there was a woman in her 90s on the same flight. About 2 and a half hours in the cabin manager made that call no one wants to hear hundreds of miles out to sea with no close alternate: 'Is there a doctor on board?' My wife is a nurse. She's looking at me with that 'What do I do?' look. Fortunately there was a doctor in the house. So the woman was moved to the front of the plane where there was a little more room, the taps on the big fans opened a little more to make some time. Guess who kept the elderly lady distracted and entertained for the duration. The looks of fear on the faces of the passengers at the sight of a baby on the way on the plane were replaced with smiles, waves and 'awwww's on the way off.

The baby was on her way to meet her 101 year old great grandmother, her only great grandchild. Unnecessary and irresponsible?

I'll tell you what is far worse than a crying baby for me, to the point that I'd like to take a punch at someone. Are those complete and utter vile individuals, who completely disregard everyone who's around them and are noisy and abusive. Usually you can tell the ones immediately they arrive on the plane. You know the type, obviously had too much to drink, play to the rest of the passengers and love the sound of their own voice. I'd take a crying baby any day!

For the record I'm talking about long haul flights here, not simply a few hours but 10+ to 15+ hours. If you have a meeting next morning whether it's personal or business you simply do not want to miss such event only because you couldn't sleep for the entire long haul flight. Also it is common that you have long transit hours in airports and have to change flights etc etc it's not uncommon for me to spend over 36 hours in airports... aircrafts, waiting, transit, lounges... hence I really need my sleep. Flying isn't fun, especially not with long hauls or long hauls with connecting flights. That just makes it a nightmare and do not tell me that I'm not entitled to a few hours sleep at least.

From where I live now if I want to get somewhere far, I must take a connecting flight or two. I can tolerate a constant screaming baby for 8 hours but no single way anything longer than that and I am not the only one in the flight that it goes on our nerves.

I do not understand parents and me and my sister will have kids one day but I would perfectly understand if other passengers prefer to fly in childfree areas. Only because I have a kid I'm not entitled to say other people shouldn't have the right to fly on a childfree section of an aircraft with 350 other passengers. And also wouldn't bring it on an airplane until 2-3 years old.

Only because you're a parent it doesn't mean you can restrict whether a person wants to fly childfree or not. Other people do not think your baby is as cute as you do.

Do I prefer drunks over babies? Yes, because they always pass out at some point while the baby somehow have the energy to  scream for 10 hours.

Jeez parents, neither me or others want to ban you from taking a flight. We just want a few rows on the plane where kids aren't allowed. You don't own the plane and aren't entitled to say such areas shouldn't exist. Remember smokefree areas? I bet smokers hated them as much as parents hate childfree areas. I will never understand.

Should I ask Aeroflot to introduce a drunkfree area too and then all the alcoholics will protest?
