What do you think is the best aircraft addon, from the last 5 years?

Featured Replies

737 NGX. Great depth of systems, and the performance is balanced for a wide range of systems.

Bottom line is the best aircraft is the one you like to fly a lot.   My vote is for Flight Sim Labs, Concorde X.  Released in March 2010, it just squeaks in under 5 years.  Amazing depth of systems, great to hand fly and very old school.

But as for my opinion as to the best aircraft addon?

I would have to say the VRS Superbug.  Not everyone's cup of tea for sure, but when it comes down to fidelity in every single area, there simply is nothing beats it.  Quite simply, it's the PMDG of military planes.  Combine it with the TacPack, and we're into things that FSX was never ever designed to do, and doing them flawlessly.  It's becoming an exciting area of the sim too, with some of the latest developments utilizing the TacPack to provide a military environment in which to fly.

+1 full disclosure...I have no experience with PMDG products but the VRS Superbug is closer to the real world manuals than any other FSX airplane I've seen. And it is a joy to fly.

I find it interesting that the VRS Super Bug keeps showing up as a top favorite.  I bought it just after it came out, but I purchased it from Aerosoft and when I had difficulty loading it up I went to the VRS website for support. I was refused support because I did not buy it directly from the VRS.

I immediately uninstalled it and never looked back and also have never considered any product from that developer. Unfortunately, I had already spent more on getting the manual printed and bound at Office Depot than I paid for the new add on with zero support.

I think they changed that attitude a while back....you should try again as you are missing out on a lot. Especially with TACPACK.

You cannot pick just one, you need to pick one per different categories, like general aviation, airliners, military. Also picking the PMDG NGX over the 777 makes no sense as the 777 adds so many new features that makes it much better as an overall addon. People may like flying the NGX but no doubt the 777 and Majestic Q400 brought addons to a new height with integrated weather radar/terrain and high quality textures.

I like warbirds, not civilians, so the CH Fw190s do it for me and the Ta152H especially. The modelling and texturing is outstanding and the systems aren't too complex to make a pleasure flight a drudge. But I did run out of fuel at 40,000ft with two full tanks, duh. RTM, Unteroffizier..

I really liked reading the choices of others.  Best is a lot different than favorite, though, both are subjective.  Out of the box, I'd say the best are...

  • Heavy metal:  737NGX.  Have it, almost never fly it.
  • Biz jet: Flight1 Mustang (but we're pushing the 5 year limit pretty close here.  Hard to believe that plane is 5 years old and still best in category.)
  • GA:  RA Duke v2

My personal favorites are the Mustang and the Carenado Malibu Mirage.

The Milviz C310R doesn't come with engine or maintenance simulations, it doesn't come with a raft of utilities, fuel planners, etc, it hasn't got the absolutely best visuals in the world, and it's not even the world's most popular GA aircraft or twin

I can't help but feel that a plane that miss all that should be a winner. Regarding what you write that she have. Does not many other planes also got most of it. On the other hand right now we can get it for $17 at PC aviator and that is significantly cheaper than the other finalists.

Urm, you might be taking this a little too seriously.

People's opinions in a thread like this, are just that, their opinions and it's not really valid to 'challenge' them.  I vastly prefer the Q400 over the PMDG 777 (both of which I own) - the fact that the PMDG 777 brought lot's of new features doesn't change that.    Clearly not everyone judges their favourite aircraft from the last 5 years, purely by the one that brought the most new features.

Ah, but here you are measuring only quantitively, and not qualitatively... .... that the Milviz C310R wins (for me) even without lot's of 'extra goodies' is testament to how many of the basic things about an aircraft that it get's right.

Ray, def try again. I bought my copy on sale from another vendor and have had no problems with VRS support or forums. As Jonathan mentioned it is well worth the attention.

A2A Cherokee. Why? It is the only FS Plane I actually take care of how to end my session, speaking of shutdown etc. Fantastic detail: after one month without flying the cherokee, it tells me: "it is over one month since your last flight, this is not good for your airplane". No other addon does something like that (besides other A2A products of course). I mean, just do some errors when starting the engine, it won't ever run again until you fix the problem yourself in the maintenance hangar. No other addon does this. Hit the ground, start your engine completely wrong or mistreat your plane somehow else using PMDG, Aerosoft or whatever other payware addon plane and NOTHING happens. The next flight you will do is like you get inside a brand new plane. The Cherokee is different and that's what I like about.

I think the "remembering the state of the airplane from the last shutdown" feature is one of the coolest features of all the features I've seen lately.  It really, really does add to the feel of actually being there.  If there was one feature I'd like to see added to any of my older airplanes it would be that one.

True.  And let's remember that Digital Aviation brought in that feature back in 2009 with the Katana 4X.  Actually there are more maintenance factors and potential in the DA Katana 4X than even in the A2A planes.  That's not to put A2A down, but to remember what an under-rated (and yes, slow!) masterpiece the DA Katana 4X is.

Best aircraft addon that should be upgraded for use in P3D......... <_<
