I got to admit: When I don't have the three hours of time necessary for planning, preparing and conducting a short-haul flight with the NGX, I sometimes jump into a default Cessna at KJFK and fly circles around Lady Liberty or underneath Verrazano Narraws Bridge, too.

When i bought fsx in 2006 i too used it in an "arcade" way. Just throttle up and do loops with a 747. That´s a natural process. My interest grow and i started to use more sofisticated addons and in the process my view of the software changed from "game" to "simulator". Just give them time :)

I think so :)

I really hope they join the simulator side, even though they are absolutely not the people you'd expect to play a sim, but who knows what's hidden inside them.

Haha but ain't gonna deny that. But I'm sure you also play the simulator as a Simulator

Same here. I remember when I just did short flights with the default 737 and slammed it into the ground. Gradually I got interested in more complex stuff and got my first proper payware aircraft, Wilco 737.

I think what Dovetail did can be only good to the community.

I'm not familiar with Steam DLC but is $16.99 for the aircraft within the average price range?

I really fear the realism of those new "DLC's"

i fear they're going to be arcadish because t's on steam. Half the steam community doesn't know anything about aircraft.

I got a friend who bought fsx:se.

He thought the default 747 was very realistic and it could prepare him to fly a real one......

the ultra realistic planes like how PMDG makes them won't sell on steam. I don't think most steam users really want to put this much into learning aircraft. They'd seem to rather be just flying around.

Most people I saw buying them told me "geez it ain't that hard this simulation is very realistic but you're exaggerating", and giving them the complete wrong image of this "game".

Most people I see flying prefer to just take off, fly a circle and "land" (aka slam into the ground nose-first with 350 knots 200 feet next to the runway) while most real simmers do actual flights. I sometimes spend hours behind the screen, and people call me crazy for doing that.

The PMDG planes require pretty much time to be set up from cold and dark, plan a route in the FMC and actually fly the aircraft.

Most people don't seem to take that time.

I fear Steam is going to turn FSX into an arcade flying game.

nearly all my friends who also play Battlefield and Call of Duty also bought FSX during the sales, and they use it like a Grand Theft Auto flying game.

But can you imagine the backlash and loss of interest to a lot of users if a PMDG style plane was first introduced. A lot of users new to flightsim would probably complain that it's way to hard to use and just give up on it and maybe flightsim all together and go back to "easier" games. Some users would be asking for easier planes to start with that weren't so hard to learn.

I know it's hard for some folks that aren't the hard core users to understand, but not everyone wants complex aircraft or study sims. Those folks will still be able to buy what they want from companies that make those types of addons and for those that want simple a/c to start with and get comfortable, they can buy the steam DLC.

How many casual, non hard core simmers, can one anticipate will do 80 flights around the world? That is a pretty hard core challenge if you ask me, and after 20+ years of simming I still haven't done it. I tried it, but got tired after a few legs, mostly because of the poor graphics and inaccurate scenery.

It's not just about the complexity and realism of the aircraft. FSX is a pretty hard core game, and the casual gamer will soon get bored with slamming aircraft into buildings and flying loops with the F/A-18. Even most of the built in missions require a lot of effort to complete.

I'd much rateher see something like Aerosoft's Sahara Desert Fly-In as DLC than the current offering, if the casual simmer is the target. And as for aircraft, it should at least be something that looks pretty, not something with FS2002 graphics.

Lol... What do you expect when a 7-8 year old game is dusted off, recycled & re-released?

Do you REALLY think there will be brand new releases (at this stage)?

For goodness sake, you dont HAVE to do ALL 80 flights at once.. pick & choose what interests you!

I'm sure there are very few hard core simmers that have got involved with Steam, I could be mistaken, but I'm sure that the hard core guys have moved on from gaming to P3D. (Yes, I know that there are some vendors that are not there yet!)

& yes, Steam is great to inroduce gamers to flying games. It will be interesting to see how many newbies will still be around in, let's say, 6 months time.

The same as P3D.

System: MSFS2024, ASUS Rog Stryx Z790-A,  Intel i9-14900KF,  Asus ROG Ryujin III 360 , Asus Hyperion Case,Rog Stryx 4090 OC, Samsung 970 EVO M.2 SSD, 1Tb Samsung 860 EVO SSD,64Gb G Skill Memory, Asus Aura 1200W Gold PSU,Win 11 ,LG C4 48" 4K OLED Screen., Airbus TCA Full Kit, Stream Deck XL. WinWing FCU, EFIS, MCDU

Lol.. Do I see a comparison between FSX:Steam (slightly modded, =FSX) & P3D (now in its 6-7th update?)

No, the comparisons have been done & dusted so many times by now, & it will be tedious & off topic to get into a debate here.

LOL!  You're taking me way too seriously :)

The thing is, everybody is speculating as to who is the typical steam gamer, typical steam flightsimmer etc. Nobody knows, although DoveTail might have a clue.

The original poster thought the "80 Flights" addon was a good idea. I just think its a bad idea. It's not very fun, it doesn't have a nice aircraft included, and why wouldn't DoveTail introduce something new. New addons are introduced on a weekly basis. They could easly have hired, lets say Carenado, to make a simple to fly, but pretty aircraft, and released it as DLC. Even Prepar3D got that right. They had to/wanted to toss some of the default aircraft and replaced them with great new ones from respected addon devs.

Actually, in retrospect, reading what I posted, you are correct, & I do apologise.

Maybe the '80 Flights' is a bit boring for most. Great idea of yours with Carenado. IRIS also springs to mind.

I agree with what you say re  what LM has done with their replacements for default planes & maybe DoveTail missed out on a golden moment to diferentiate themselves from FSX. But then, there could have been license issues from MS as part of the deal.

Methinks a huge market is out there for 'simplified' planes & missions for the newbies. Imagine the marketing oppotunities for the devs out there. Bronze, Silver & Gold editions of planes..

P.S.  It is quite interesting to read the reviews (4) of the DLC in the Steam site.

Cheers, Blue Skys, & Happy Landings,

Robin

Guys, by buying that DLC it's not like they can only fly in those 80 flights heh.

They can just take the new plane out and do whatever you want.

FSX on Steam helps on the long run because, while some indeed will get bored soon of the game, others will get more interested. They will start asking themselves "is this how things really works? is there something more i can learn? are there addons with a deeper simulation of flight models/avionics?" And that's how a part of the player pool shifts towards the developers we are used to and their addons.

If they were to release PMDG on Steam, people interested in it would have already bought them years ago (or months), while the new players would think it's too complicated.

(either way i don't believe PMDG will ever distribute their products on Steam because they'll have to share earnings with Steam and perhaps even Dovetail)

Chock 1.1: "The only thing that whines louder than a jet engine is a flight simmer."

I noticed quite a few of the comments on Steam are from people used to Train Simulator (and I feel their DLC is daylight robbery). What they are expecting is that this is the only way to fly around the world, because the Train Sim DLCs are required to go to new places. They feel they have a "restricted" base game somehow, and don't quite understand. We should help new people wherever possible!

I wonder whether dovetail will allow individual developers in or if it has to be some larger publisher (like Flight 1) that they are working with.

Would love to sell some of my future stuff through Steam.
