How effective are Trackirs ?

Featured Replies

I only fly with fs2crew so any switch I cant see I command via voice. I don't really need TIR to intercept an ILS either and certainly not in cruise and I have OPUS cams set up as well.

Don't get me wrong I think its great for Props especially in the circuit area.

I'm leaning towards using FaceTrackNoir. My common things are on my © Drive. Everything related to FSX is in my (E) Drive. I have FSX scenery on my external hard drive. My question is which drive should I download to ? I also understand that no gear is used on  my head, is that true ?

You can download it wherever you want as you start it independently from FSX and it then uses Simconnect to pass data to the sim. In its basic mode FaceTrackNoIR uses the faceAPI tracker and tracks the features of your face (the "T" shape of you nose and eyes) and requires nothing other than a webcam. However, whilst it does work, it can be a little intermittent and it's sensitive to lighting (must be fairly even across your face) and doesn't work so well if you wear glasses. If you choose PointTracker from the tracker source menu, you can then use it with an LED clip (like the DelanClip) and it's transformed! - it becomes smooth, accurate and predictable. There are profiles for FSX available online to get you started and it's then fully customisable for range of movement and sensitivity. Most webcams work but some are better than others. Ideally you want one which can produce at least 30 FPS and you should turn off all of the auto settings. I would definitely recommend going down the PointTracker/LED route if you want genuine TrackIR performance. Let me know if you need any more advice.

I agree with the post from Kuragiman it is weird looking at the screen and turning your head,Turn your head too much and you are looking at the pilots seat. Also when you move in your seat or look down at your keyboard or other controls you have to reset the view. I have watched people using it on Utube and they are fiddling around for things with their hands while keeping there head fixed on the screen. I bought it after all the recommendations but it was a very expensive mistake.

You should be able to sell it pretty quick right here on Avsim

Question: I'm running Track IR4 Pro with the trac clip. I'm running it with the 5.2.2 software.

If I purchase a Track IR5 can I just swap the hardware? As in no need to uninstall reinstall the software/drivers again. I've got a second rig so the old unit it won't go to waste.

Thanks.

I'd take a bet you can. You'd very soon find out!  Obviously you'll have to tune in the new one.

Can't fly (or drive) any of my sims without it at this point.

I see a recurring theme here

It's essential. I use it with all aircraft, for fsx:se and p3d, and with 3 32" monitors. It's not even the same sim as no track ir and one monitor.

Cheers,

Jonathan

Like everyone says, TrackIR is a must buy.  I have Trackir5 with the proclip using an eyefinity setup with three 24inch monitors.  I absolutely love it and could not even dream of using fsx without it.

I am running TrackIR 5 with software version 4.2 build 39 because I much prefer that versions interface. never liked the interface on the v5 software and always felt that the 4 software series ran better.

Interesting. I just ordered IR5, curious to see which one I can get to run smoother with which software. Although I must admit, once I figured out which combinationof settings worked best for the type of flying I prefer using IR4 and 5 series software it's as smooth as using a hat switch and infinitely more easy to get back to front and center.

I started touring Aerosofts French Polynesia addon this morning, hadn't done it for a while. Track IR makes for an awesome ride.

I am a TIR fan too. I use Oculus Rift on DCS mostly. but as I can't get it to work on FSX or XP10(yet), I have to make do.

I'm a sad git really, that I fly the NGX occasionally- I need TIR as it's just not real enough without it. Flying 737ng is my day job after all!
