July 8, 201510 yr Let's wait until DTG releases in new flight simulator and wait for thread complaining about it. +1 Dick
July 8, 201510 yr We all know thats inevitable no matter what happens, so again, why worry about it beforehand? *shrug* I have a vivid memory of a the original MS Flight forum before it was mercifully locked. And the second forum that had to be watched like a hawk to make sure it didn't happen again. And the DTG-is-the-devil-incarnate posts before FSX-SE was released. And the........... (paste name of a zillion other threads, here) Bleah. We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically. July 8, 201510 yr I'm rooting for an in-game store, and the Steam Installation process. It worked beautifully for Flight and a million other steam programs, and the thought of a set-it-and-forget-it installation of dozens of potential Dlc's while you go fishing is amazingly enticing over the absolute mess we have today. If possible, it would be nice to have Dovetail have sort of Apple-store like vetting process over anything coming directly though the store, both to control quality and to find incompatibilities. Things installed not through the store? Thats on the user. DTG seal of approval? We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... Things installed not through the store? Thats on the user. DTG seal of approval? That's exactly what killed your beloved Flight. Control over 3rd party developers which effectively locked them out. Leaving little content to keep users happy. This is why you don't see PMDG running to market on Steam. It's not viable for them. The best scenario is the model used with FSX-SE. Keeping the sim open to both Steam apps, as well as external developers. If DTG closes off external 3rd party apps in their new sim it will go the way of Flight. July 8, 201510 yr Murmur!!!! Long time no see :-) Come and play Il2 BoS and DCS with me!!!! Hi J., I was spending too much time on flight sims as well, so now I've decided to spend too much time on bicycle riding instead. The funny thing is that whatever your hobby may be, there's always going to be heated discussions between two opposing camps: if it's not: "which flight sim has a better flight model?", it's gonna be: "are wide tires better than narrow ones"? "Society has become so fake that the truth actually bothers people".
July 8, 201510 yr That's not what he said. He suggested a store that would have DTG-approved content, not locking out all other content. Then we have that now in FSX-SE Thanks Tom My Youtube Videos! http://www.youtube.com/user/tf51d
July 8, 201510 yr That's not what he said. He suggested a store that would have DTG-approved content, not locking out all other content. And the fact that you had to come add some logic to the post after somebody leapt at the red flag is exactly why the forum will erupt eventually, no matter what DTG actually does. I suspect it's also why this thread is essentially inert. Any post that suggests anything that deviates from the way it's always been done (always being since FS9/FSX) gets pretty much instantly challenged. Thats not just here, but on the Steam forum as well. Way too much emotional investment. At this point, best answer should probably be marked as "Please recreate FSX in every detail. K'thanks!" It would certainly have saved a lot of pages. We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically. July 8, 201510 yr Pretty sure that's how Train Sim works. They "vet" DLC's through Steam, but we as users can install from other sources, and other sources do exist Chris Smith
July 9, 201510 yr I was spending too much time on flight sims as well, so now I've decided to spend too much time on bicycle riding instead. Funnily enough I've also cut back on flight-sim flying and I'm now cycling regularly and feel much better for it. Take a look > http://i.ytimg.com/vi/QfuiGGs_-Ug/maxresdefault.jpg ;-)
July 9, 201510 yr Are we ever gonna see a new flight simulator in the next 10 years? I really have my doubts Greg Smith
July 9, 201510 yr Now that is settle down no doubt for the continuation of FSX and that no one wants another FLIGHT model failure. (Act-1) Let's wait for the 32 bits massive data base update first and when the clock starts moving again (faster than 5GHZ) (Act-2) the FSxx-64 bits revolution. Thanks for your acceptance and understanding of out traditional, orthodox and beloved FSxx simulator franchise. May everything change to improve the same. Go DTG. Cheers, K'thanks!" Speaking about emotional me think. Cheers,
July 9, 201510 yr That's not what he said. He suggested a store that would have DTG-approved content, not locking out all other content. The problem is steam wants it's cut if you sell within their software. And DTG will want their cut also if you are using their store. Many addon developers are operating on very thin margins and wouldn't be able to afford it. There are tons of Steam games which allow 3rd-party mods and such outside of Steam. It's not a big deal to allow it. The current model used for FSX-SE is the right one and will serve to keep the 3rd party support expansive. Those that want to sell in the store can. Those that can't can distribute themselves. Those that don't want the hassle of using multiple installers can simply only buy addons from the Steam store. Choice is a good thing.
July 9, 201510 yr So for DTG: Off the top of my head: 1) Steam in-game store, built into the sim. Unattended installs. Some assurance of basic quality control. 2) 64bit, if not now that on future versions. 3) Limited to no backwards compatibility. Start fresh, Start new, 4) Possibility of crash damage on planes whose parent companies allow it. 5) If using FLIGHT-derived technology, then take wide advantage of the mission creation capabilities, which were very extensive. 6) Keep new users very firmly in mind: Something like the TS2015 train academy would help a lot of people. 7) World coverage would be attractive, but limited areas with higher quality would probably not be an issue with new audiences, depending on the price of the individual DLC's 8) The ability to design an in-game Avatar to represent you. The avatar would be able to interact in various ways with the environment (do walk-arounds, etc) and would also be your personal representation in social interactions with other players. Social interaction should be an important part of the multiplayer experience. 9) The Aerocache idea in FLIGHT was not something I was even largely interested in, and the whole idea sounded boring to me. To my surprise, however it became a huge attraction to a wide range of players to the point that ways were found to continue adding them after the sim was shut down. Consider building on them, and ways of enhancing the idea even further. 10) Consider real lighting and night lighting, rather than FSX style lights, with painted lights on the ground. Something more similar to X-plane. 11) Consider allowing dog fighting, even if its in segregated "matches" for willing participants. Think of it as a type of laser-tag. New users in FLIGHT often did such things using their imaginations only since the game itself did not really support the activity, and it would be cool to have things that could break up occasional boredom, for non-technical users. 12) Sharing of cockpits, shared activities. (should be fairly self explanatory and there should be lots of ways to implement the idea) Players should be able to see each others avatars, here. 13) Flat ribbon roads should go away. In fact as much of legacy FSX should go away as is financially reasonable, especially in the graphics department. Clouds should switch to volumetric, And the more versatile Flight landclass system should be emplaced with modifications to make it more versatile. Buildings should drop the overall gray color-scheme, and adapt something more cheerful like Orbx tends to do. The world is not grey! 14) DTG tends to include extensive content creation tools in its products, and I encourage this strongly in any new sim. The Steam workshop is an important venue for new and creative content from users, and the tools used by DTG itself should be made available so that even regular users are empowered in a way that they have not been for quite some time. 15) Career mode. This is really where some fun could happen, if done creatively. Perhaps you could have multiple careers as hinted at it FLIGHT but unfortunately never followed up. Perhaps you are running a tour company, and need to dash from spot to spot to pick up passengers on time with the passengers critiquing your flying. (Crazy taxi?) there are a million possible scenarios. 16) Make the walkaround matter. Hey! there's a cat hidden in the wing of your glider! B) One of your tires is flat! there's an access panel dangling! 17) Random events. A tire just blew. A bird just totalled your engine! Can you make it to the ground safely. Things like this can be completely random events, or specific missions, or both. 18) If there are military planes, then remember the original FSX missions and give a nod to those. Allow jets to drop sandbag or flour bombs at designated targets, even moving targets. 19) Make the Interface very friendly and versatile. Perhaps even allow the user to distribute screens across multiple monitors as easily as possible. Make sure fonts change accordingly at any resolution. 20) VR modes, natively support oculus and other emerging tech. 21) Very customizable camera and viewpoint options, and multiple camera modes. (see War Thunder) 22) Nullify or encrypt or whatever the basic sim innards! Get the users out of there and keep them out. Nobody should have any reason to be messing with the CFG if the developers have done things right. It just creates a support nightmare. Put a big old "default settings" button where anyone can find it. In fact, have the sim analyze the system and offer some recommended defaults. 23) Not only allow but support and encourage other activities within the sim. Boating, etc. 24) Lots and lots of Steam Achievements. 25) Airshows, aerobatics, air races etc. I liked FLIGHTS air shows, but the scenery kind of let things down a bit and it was all kind of flat. Where were the crowds!? 26) Dramatic weather. Lighting should light up the ground around the strike and white out the sky for an instant, if it's close. make us feel the threat! Will there ever be a creditable tornado or hurricane in a sim? Up the sample rate of the sounds and eliminate repetition as much as possible. Nothing sadder than hearing the same tiny rain sound-loop repeat endlessly while you are flying. Clouds over cities should be lit up by the reflected light from below.... In other words a real and modern lighting system. 27) Something that uses existing data from OSM and others to finally recreate a recognizable world below the aircraft. In reality, the MS landclass system is pretty obsolete and should be retired. I'm just not sure that anything based on "Microsoft Flight Technology has the ability to step that , so consider this one "blue sky" 28) God-rays! (Don't forget that DX12 support) 29) DTG, ask this question in other places! Reddit comes to mind, as well as other types of sites. Get a wider view! 30) Easter eggs! 31) On second thought DTG, unless you like drama, squash any thoughts of backwards compatibility. I know having all those years of potential DLC sitting out there is beautiful, but backwards compatibility is likely to bring more angst, pricing resentment, shovelware, and general mayhem than it can possibly be worth. Stick to your pattern of a good casual base that invites a wide variety of user-types. This market-segment is already "covered" and is more than capable of providing additional content for more sophisticated users. More to come!!! We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.
