Benefits of using a 4k TV?

Featured Replies

I don't know if it's capped, or if some kind of paging scheme is used, but clearly all of the video card's VRAM does not block system memory space.

I depends on other factors also ... Triple Buffer will consume more VRAM as will texture caching which isn't part of the 4GB address space, SGSS AA will also increase VRAM usage ... the most VRAM I've used has been 5.1 GB ... shown this video before when monitoring with DD's New York (skip to 12:51 min mark and look upper left corner):

The key is addressable, so there is a relationship limit but not necessarily a direct 1 to 1.  For example XPlane 10.x is 64bit image, but does not require more than 4GB VRAM (so far) ... in fact, the most I've seen Xplane 10.x use is 3.1GB VRAM even when everything set to max with several  add-ons and operating at 2 FPS.

Cheers, Rob.

@Rob--I was actually referring to the remark about DX9's VRAM hardware address mapping...it was once widely considered fact that VRAM hardware address mapping in DX9 (n/a with P3D/DX11) resulted in blocking an amount of system address space equal to the video card's VRAM...e.g., with 512MB of VRAM, the hardware address map in a DX9 app was supposed to be a block of 512MB taken from the system's 4GB address space.  But of course that can't be true if a 4GB or 6GB VRAM card works with FSX or other programs in DX9...if it were the entire system address space would be lost to the hardware address mapping, and nothing should run at all.  So I have to conclude that there's some kind of other process in play to limit how much VAS is lost to the hardware address map in DX9.

Bob I didn't mean the whole cards video memory. Dx11 and 9 handle it differently. But with 9 , the amount it is using does count towards VAS. How much of it I don't know. With 11 even on a 32 bit app it is my understanding that very little counts towards VAS. At least that how I interpreted it from the MS article on it.

I'm still puzzled at why some get a mouse lag issue at 30Hz.  I've run my Sony 4K at 30Hz and 60Hz and mouse motion has been identical ... my only thoughts:

1.  Use default standard OS mouse drivers (mouse trails disabled)

2.  Use a USB mouse (not a PS2 mouse)

3.  Check GPU drivers (maybe DDU and re-install GPU drivers from scratch)

4.  Make sure the monitor is set to the correct input mode (as mentioned above)

Cheers, Rob.

Mouse lag is quite noticeable for me as well at 30 hz on a Samsung with latest Nvidia drivers on a GTX1080.  It doesn't really matter, though, as 60 hz with fps capped at 30 in the sim provides the same benefit.  I'm quite happy with that setting.

I just took the jump into 4K simming with FSX and for the most part I'm enjoying the new experience. I have a few questions if you guys can help out.

My setup is FSX (boxed), Windows 7, 4790K processor and a GTX 970.

I was using a 23inch 1080p monitor and have upgraded to a 40 inch 4K Samsung TV.

I'm running at 30hz but with some decline in my FPS. If I understand correctly I'm pushing a lot more pixels and that's causing the reduction.  Am I correct there?

I run at full screen and if I go into windowed mode and reduce it to about half the size my FPS goes up by 10 to 15 frames. Is my 970 overtaxed?

Would I benefit by upgrading my video card? Maybe a Titan or 1080?

My AA is the same as before, using NVI with 8xS [Combined: 1x2 SS + 4x MS] (Antialiasing Setting) and 2x Sparse Grid Super Sampling.

Am I correct in assuming I can lower my AA settings since I'm now using 4K?

What AA settings would reduce the pressure on my video card?

Thanks

Bill

But of course that can't be true if a 4GB or 6GB VRAM card works with FSX or other programs in DX9...if it were the entire system address space would be lost to the hardware address mapping, and nothing should run at all. Not if you run FSX with DX10 with  the fixer it shouldn't. VRAM is outside of the apps VAS in DX10 and DX11. Note there is a condition that this may not be true. If the developer declared address space for shadow VRAM lockable then that space may not be cleared in the app. Since FSX has both a DX9 and DX10 mode, and was developed prior to DX10 release, Aces may have done that.

Thanks

So, can anyone recommend a 50 - 55 inch 4k curved tv for use strictly with P3D? Would like the option of 30 or 60Hz and chroma 4:4:4.

I got a Samsung UE48JU6675 roughly a year ago and it's working great so far!

The most important thing I was looking for when I got it was Chroma 4:4:4 support @ 60 Hz meaning not only P3D and movies will look great but also text when working on the desktop.

Edited to add a link to a thread I created back when I got my 4K TV where you will also be able to see a couple of pictures of my setup and what it looks like "in action".

Here's the link.

I have a Samsung 40in 4K TV UN40KU6300 I picked up at Best Buy for $419 and it runs 60Hz or 30Hz naturally and I followed Rob's recommendations and it works beautifully with no lag.

I run unlimited with vsync and triple buffering both on. Since I can regularly maintain over 30fps vsync works great with the 30Hz system. I would never go with 60Hz again after experiencing the 30Hz system I now have.

For what it's worth...

I use a $600 50" Vizio 4K TV and run P3D, XP in 4K.

Benefits for me are:

1. Much better bang for your buck compared to a smaller 4K monitor.

2. Bigger really is better! In fact I find 50" small now.

3. I get absolutely no lag or ghosting while maintaining 30 fps with my setting set high using Orbx, PMDG etc...

I use a GTX1080 but my GTX970 also ran 4K nicely.

I also run at 30hz if I try 60hz I get micro stutters. 30hz is as smooth as silk.

I've owned every version of flight simulator since Flight Simulator 3.0 in 1988.

Windows 11 Pro loaded on a 4TB Gen5 Crucial T700 SSD, 4TB Samsung 990 Pro SSD, Ryzen 9 7950x3d, AS Rock X670e Taichi Motherboard, Gigabyte Gaming RTX 4090 OC 24GB, 64GB (2x32GB) Viper Venom  DDR5-6000MT/s, MSI 32" MAG 321UPX QD-OLED 260hz 4K Gaming Monitor.

So guys i was going to buy a Acer Predetar Monitor for around 800 euros, would i be better getting a 4K television for probably less money will both give me the same picture quality, any advice welcome....Cheers

I'm sold on my 4K TV particularly with 30Hz capability and the response time is fine for flight simulation.

I don't use it for any first person shooter games or fast action stuff so it works great.

When I Google that Samsung model, everything comes back in German. Need a 50in curved US model.

I recently upgraded to a  49" 4K TV after reading many comments from posters, as to how great the sim experience is. A big Thank-You.  I have to agree, Wow.  It certainly feels more like sitting in the cockpit and looking out the cockpit windows. I can see my instruments more clearly. I don't have to click on the ND or the PFD for a 2D popup in order to see it better. Very glad I made the move. I was using a LG 30" PC monitor.

The one I purchased at Best Buy was the Samsung UN49KU6500 curved.  It took some research, but it does support 4.4.4 Croma when you select the "HDMI UHD Colour Option (Color for you US readers ;) .  I can select 30 Hz in my Nvidia driver, but I have not really compared 60hz vers 30hz yet, in P3D.

Glad I made the move. I sit about 2-3 feet away from the TV and the text is very crisp and clean. I just had to get used to  using smaller windows for my browser, email etc. as viewing my browser window in full screen is a bit big on a 49" screen.
