Orbx released Global Buildings HD

Featured Replies

The most recent update from the developer suggests that some, perhaps only one or very few

textures are shared between building scenery objects used at some airports and autogen buildings

seen in other areas.

I am not so far seeing this problem at default airports.

I have noticed in the past when using updated terminal textures (Zinnertek, REX WWA, etc) that these updated textures also replace some of the default building textures in cities. Definitely some shared files there.

As much as I've been looking forward to this, I won't be buying it unless ORBX offers lower resolution textures.  The 4K textures will simply eat up more video RAM for little benefit.  Unless you use a very large monitor/TV, your eyes are probably not going to detect the difference between 2K and 4K textures.

I know that you can set the cfg file to only display up to 1024 or 2048, but this likely consumes additional computing resources for the resolution downconversion.

I am not sure that this will consume all that much memory... There are different textures for different regions, and only the region you are in needs to be loaded.  In addition, each 4096x4096 texture sheet includes a dozen or so buildings, so not that many texture sheets are required.. All in all, a tempest in a teapot, I believe..

I like the new look, and have not noticed any performance impact..

Agree. I have had no performance issues at all so far..

I’m in the same boat. Won’t buy this until they offer the option for lower res textures.

And no, placing the responsibility for downsizing this on the user is definitely not the way for me. Reducing global texture res has all sorts of other disadvantages and shouldn’t even be necessary.

Just because it doesn’t have any notable performance impact for your usage scenario doesn’t mean there isn’t one. And there will definitely be one considering how much autogen there is and the required processing power and memory that is needed to display it.

You may not notice it in certain scenarios, but this absolutely doesn’t come for free and flying the FSL into Heathrow with dense autogen just got even more demanding on your hardware.

It’s also completely unnecessary to have 4K textures for autogen. What’s next? 4K stars? Each star in the night sky individually textured at 4K? Just because you can doesn’t mean you should...and is exactly what people were warning about when we made the move to 64-bit.

Sounds good in their advertising spin 4K WOW!!!! You would think they are selling TV's.

haven't noticed any performance drop here and it does look very good on approach.i mean it does say 4k textures in the ad for it.so if you don't want them don't buy it.buy the other one from RD.i have bought quite a bit from Orbx and they always deliver and much cheaper than you think for Worldwide texture coverage.

Try flying over London or Paris ( LC based scenery ) at low altitude with an airliner ( approach ) like PMDG and you will see a performance hit..

If Orbx includes a 1K and 2K set to choose from more people will buy this. Myself I would resize them to the default 512 too..

Hi

Most big cities have a hit with or without 4k textures.it's true that it would be a better option to be able to resize them, maybe that will come in an update.does seem to defeat the object if they don't look so sharp.

Default is 512. Did you ever had the impression that the default building textures were not sharp.

Till 2 weeks ago we had default 512 buildings for more than 15 years...

funny enough i did.always thought they were blurred.i do have a 5ghz 1080ti setup although i do have to run with some of my settings on medium/dense.

which is enough for me .i would rather dial back a few settings and have sharper textures.as people say ..each to there own .

I also want developers to push the envelope a bit.look at your setup gerard, you should be able to run anything you like at max settings.this is the one core limitation .until our flightsims become fully able to utilise all cores we are always going to have problems with Prepar3d scenery.lets see what fs2020 has to offer 🙂

Exactly. I believe MSFS 2020 will be a big "wake up" call for our hobby.....

i hope so.to be honest after MSflight we were scuppered.it was FSX or nothing.Xplane which i own is a big investment to get it looking the same.ms2020 is what i have high hopes for.i have to be realistic also,MS have let me down before.so i will try and remain positive about it until its release.
