Again, I don't understand why some people are so threatened by this new simulator.

Change can be difficult for some people, and some have a vested financial interest in keeping the status quo.  If the new sim is good and capable then the market will shift regardless of a few naysayers.  If the new sim turns out poorly then we'll all still be flying whatever we are flying today.

At least the potential for radical improvement is a reality now, it's just up to MS to capitalize on that potential.  just like Field of Dreams, if you build it we will come, even if a few stubborn ones stay behind.  :)

That is a $35.95 addon sir.

We're talking default aircraft and lighting here.

The default aircraft have 3D gauges too, and that's default lighting. No "art" addons or anything else other than a weather plugin that's disabled for that shot.

To compare P3D or XP loaded out with payware addons to a few photos and a short video of the new MFS in it's default form speaks volumes as what we have now does not approach what we're seeing from the new simulator.

That shot isn't "loaded out" with anything but one addon aircraft model. This is how the new MFS will be judged, like it or not. The one area where the trailer *is* very impressive is scenery, compared to what we have now.

This gives our hobby a bright future which in its current state is stagnant at best.

FWIW, I'm not feeling threatened. I'm excited by the potential that MS is showing in the scenery generation if nothing else (so far).

I just can't agree that our hobby is "stagnant at best." We may not like the pace at which P3D and XP are moving forward, but they're not standing still. And we'd better hope they're still around as alternatives, if MS decides to pull the plug on this new project at some point in the future. Alternatives are good for the hobby, and so is competition.

Why would they bother using photoshop when nothing in that screenshot is anything that hasn’t been done in many other modern game engines before? It’s not 1995.

i honestly don’t know why people are so desperate for this to be word not allowed. What is the root?

If this is a example of what Microsoft’s in house development team can do with the sim imagine what first line developers, such as A2A, PMDG, FsLabs, Aerosoft will be able to do.

Isn't this model coming out of a AAA studio (Asobo)? Not to sell A2A etc short but I expect it's going to take a while for the traditional third parties to retool and build up new workflows for making content on a new and modern engine.

I'll dare to say it's something personal - most of the negative comments are certainly not rational. We've seen a nice (stunning) looking trailer and a screenshot and we don't have any concrete information whatsoever. There are simply not enough facts, actually, there aren't any at all, that would make it rational to say "this will be a game changer" or "this will be garbage".

It's nothing other than a game of 'wait and see' and I'm a bit perplexed by the ton of negativity that some are meeting a possibly brand new simulator with. In the FSElite comment section people go as far as insulting Microsoft for making the announcement of a new sim. This community certainly has changed.

I'm having a hard time understanding some of these reactions. Not just yours, there's a lot of shock and awe being expressed over that MFS panel screenshot. Haven't any of 'yall ever flown a recent sim?

I don't get it. That's a nice pane,l but it's not world-shattering increase over what's out there and flyable now. Here's what the panel of my Bell 412 looks like in XP11.

Bell412%20-%20Cockpit%20Panel.png

3D gauges and sunlight/shadow has been in sims for years. This isn't "my sim is better than yours," just a demonstration of the state of the art. It's nice that MS is catching up, but I don't see anything world-shattering in that panel shot at the top of the thread, unless you've only been flying FS9 or something similar.

Sorry, the cockpit textures on the MSFS screenshot look MUCH better than your screen.

Actually that is one of my biggest gripes with XP11: cockpit texturing. Generally it is sub-par and, while the sim looks great in the outside, the same is not true in the flight-deck. There are some notable exceptions like the IXEG, TBM, Diamond, etc.

Yes, we don`t know how much post-processing went into that pic, but I believe that, at least, the cockpit textures have not been retouched.

Its actually the Azure-Cloud in this case....but that pretty much sums it up. Some just like to dislike....

You are right when you say we don't have a lot of facts to work here... But it's different when they share an amazing shot of a panel and people start to say it's photoshopped or fake.

Why would they share a fake shot as a work in progress?

It's a nice panel but to me it's a far cry from that MFS shot. I see some flat 2d stuff and baked shadows going the wrong way compared to the dynamic shadows. The texture resolution is much lower. The XP11 shot looks dull and lifeless by comparison, the materials (plastics and metals) don't look real like they do in the MFS shot.

Of course it's all incremental improvements, not earth shattering but from the looks of it MS is doing more than just catching up.

3D gauges and shadow, yes. Sunlight, no, not at all, at least not in P3D. And this screenshot also seems to lack realtime highlights as in the MFS shot. Seems to me all lighting effects and reflections are baked into the textures. The MFS shot looks a hundred times better thanks to the real time lighting and reflection effects. It's incomparable, really.

Or Maybe the XP one was taken in semi overcast conditions and is actually very accurate for the given lighting conditions. In other words, no, it's not always bright and sunny!

Nothing is "baked in" with lighting in that shot. These are anti-glare gauges, but other models in the sim like the default C172 show glassy reflections in the gauges.

We can disagree about whether it's comparable or not, but let's at least be accurate about the technology being used. Real time lighting and reflection effects are not anything new and revolutionary.

Yours looks like a cartoon - that curse of FSX/ P3D and X-Plane. Look at the rivets on the right hand door, the Fire Switches, it's just all that horrible cartoony mush. Don't get me wrong - it looks good - and what I'd expect from an expensive add-on purchase - but it doesn't look real.

The MS one looks pretty much real.

Even more in 4K.

Go in close...there's no comparison...

Okay, just for fun, here's the earlier shot with some color correction and fake depth of field whipped up on short notice:

Bell412%20-%20Cockpit%20Panel%20-%20Blur

I'm not saying this is exactly equal to the quality of the MFS panel, and it's on a 1920x1200 display, not 4k, and without all texture settings on high (my rig ain't the greatest).

As a technology demo, I think it shows why I'm not seeing anything "jaw dropping" in the MFS shot. It's what we should expect with a modern sim.

Sorry, still not on the same level.  The MSFS in-cockpit shot built a bridge over the uncanny valley, crossed it, and is smiling back at us.  Your X-plane shot is stuck firmly on this side of the valley.
