Sadly I probably won't be chosen as I was filling out the application and the Wi-Fi failed dropping me out. I was hoping but we will see.

I was able to finish the application when I got home but couldn't go back and correct anything,

Dude you know they're gonna DM you and ask what your username is lol

Yeah, your user name was actually mentioned about how much they appreciate you in an update thread from the MSFS Team. Expect a limo driver to come to your house, pick you up, drive you too an airport and fly you to France for inclusion in the Alpha Build 🙂 Now the airplane might be a simulator ( see how I did that ). Good luck. I also though it said there was a Save function too while filling it out? Maybe I am wrong about that!

Weather however is indeed a cause of poor FPS. The FSX/P3D cloud system has an insane amount of overdraw (transparent sprites being drawn on top of one another miles and miles away even though they're not visible), which is ridiculously inefficient. This is why you get worse FPS in big storms vs light clouds.

Not to also mention the impact of a ton of AI planes and road traffic. That can be worth 5-10 FPS alone at large airports. Throw in some bad weather on top of it and it’s even worse.

The survey progress was automatically saved. They explicitly stated that it's safe to leave and complete and a later time. I had to hit F5 when it wouldn't advance to the next part and when I reloaded everything was saved and as I left it.

With a bit of luck by the time it get`s to release the stickies will have pushed all the other post of the front page😁

You all are thinking of how these engines were written literally DECADES ago.

We have simulators these days that simulate spaceships everywhere from orbit, through the atmosphere, and then down to the planet's surface where you can walk around (see: Star Citizen).

Loading a complex 747 into a earth-based Flight Simulator in 2019 should not be an issue if it is written to today's standards.   It doesn't matter how complex your flap system is, or your FMS, or your HUD, or what the texture resolution is.

Everyone is thinking about old flight simulators, maybe that's because we've been stuck there for so long.

My laptop's graphics card is capable of 1.69 trillion floating point operations per second.  And it's not a top of the line card at this point.  My CPU can do 354 billion per second.

We'll be ok, as long as this is coded with a new engine targeting 2019 and beyond.

I'm willing to bet upwards of 5 cents that some of the processing will be remote.  With Google Stadia being nearly 100% remote process, I imagine Microsoft isn't far behind and wants FS2020 to be a tech demo sort of speak...

Which would suck for people with lousy internet connections. I hope that's at least optional. Actually, if it's not optional I'll have to seriously consider whether to spend money on it.

All the Internet Of Things debacles should have taught people that if a product requires a remote server in order to function, eventually the product will be useless when the company shutters the server. People who bought into smart home plugs from Lowes and automation hubs from Nest among many others already learned that lesson the hard way. Hopefully the sim community won't have to.

I can understand the online-required approach in an MMO, but an awful lot of flight simmers aren't multiplayers. Requiring an internet connection for basic functionality would be stupid, and would guarantee a premature end-of-life for the sim. It's kind of nice that people are still able to use FSX after all these years - and even it suffered functionality loss when the weather service expired. Now imagine if the graphics had gone away after expiration. That's an unnecessary situation to put users in.

Does it though? I agree with you on the other part about the risk of server shutdown.

What?  Internet connections are part of many regular games these days.

If you agree with that then, yes... If the server shuts down and the server is what's doing the processing, then FS2020 will stop working.

There's a difference between being part of a game and an absolute requirement for the game. FSX used an internet connection for the weather, but the rest still functioned just fine even if you weren't online. If the *processing* for the game is off-site, then once that processing center shuts down, the game is dead.  See: Every MMO ever closed.

Did you guys have all your peripherals plugged in when you did the dxdiag?

I read somewhere that it picks up flight sticks, VR headsets, and such. I wrote those in the form, but if having them show up on the dxdiag report increases my chances I just might do it again.

No its in the survey that's why they want you to fill as full as possible yoke if you have one and panels and manufacturer.

I didn't have my yoke plugged in but I seldom use it these days.  I did mention that I had TrackIR.
