FAA testing whether seats are too close for safe evacuations

Featured Replies

I hope this proves fruitful.  The 'Sardine Can Era' needs to go (over packing people on planes)...  Frontier and Spirit should be on notice.

Great. I'm 6'4" and it is very uncomfortable for me to remain confined to one of these small rat cage sized seat areas on virtually any trip. The "pack as many as you can get in" era needs to go bye bye.  Let the ticket prices go up. We need comfort and safety as primary objectives.

Thank you.

Oh yes. I saw the prototypes where passengers are almost standing Time to bring sanity back for trips.

There are other issues they should be looking at as well, in particular whether the increasing numbers of "super-size me" passengers would impede evacuation via the overwing emergency exit hatches, for example.

Many cities are now having to buy "bariatric" ambulances for their EMS services, with extra-wide gurneys, air suspensions, heavy-duty ramps, and a winch to pull a gurney with a 400-600+ lb patient on board the rig.

It wouldn't be any kind of laughing matter to find yourself in the line to the overwing exits in a ditching or gear-up landing scenario behind a 450 lb passenger with a double-wide derriere that would give the term "plug hatch" a whole new meaning...

So for safety, and not just comfort issues, the industry should adopt an adaptation of the OJ Simpson defense: "if yer butt don't fit, you must not sit..."

I would also ban passengers being allowed to recline their seats without getting permission from the person sitting behind them. I just thought that I would throw that one in the pot whilst we are here.

amen! Only time I've almost had a skirmish on a flight and wasn't for me but the poor tall guy next to me. Guy ahead threw his seat back and almost crush the poor fellows legs! I let the guy know what I thought of that!

Brings back memories with a flight i was on. The guy in front of me kept squirming around in his seat. I almost had breakfast, and coffee on my lap.Funny now , not back then lol!!!!

I was sitting at the 2L door of a 747 thoroughly enjoying the space while my dad in the row behind me was squeezed in between the airframe and an XXL pax. No, that guy did not fit into this seat and it was a struggle for him to even walk the aisle and get into the row. Apart from comfort issues, in case of an emergency evacuation my dad would basically have been trapped while waiting for the guy to try and get out.

The worst for me is when you have little kids sitting behind you and they keep kicking the back of your seat. I’ve had this happen quite a few times on domestic flights that I’ve taken a coach seat. Funny how the parents a lot of times don’t have the idea to tell their kids to settle down and not kick the seat in front of them.

...There should also be storage space at the rear of the seat for your DVT stockings....now that long haul is becoming longer....
