New Stewart KSWF released

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I thought I'd plug this new release from a fairly new developer, Sierrasim, and ask for some opinions: https://secure.simmarket.com/sierrasim-simulation-kswf-new-york-stewart-international-airport-p3d4.phtml

Personally I've been waiting for a nice KSWF, as it completes my NYC metropolitan area airports. It has a nice location and layout - the kind of airport I like to visit in my sim.

Sierrasim makes some nice stuff overall. Definitely not 'up there', but they seem to be on the way. Their sceneries appear to be getting better with each release. I have a lot of their Colombian airport sceneries, which are quite nice. However, I will add that I always bought them at a sale. Their KSWF is fairly high-priced compared to their other efforts.

I haven't bought it yet, but if somebody does, I'd be very interested to hear opinion!

Fully agree. They also seem to be very active lately, which is something good.

interesting one.  Also will await some reviews.  But a likely purchase for me

If I recall...It was also an alternate airport for shuttle landing.

There was once talk of high speed rail from NYC to there.  It would be a pretty penny to build.

I live equidistant between EWR and SWF.  Usually end up at EWR since it's an international flight.

I flew out of Stewart to Ft. Lauderdale in 2012 in an ERJ 195 .  Spotted a few large military cargo jets parked back then:  It was actually once strictly a military base...

Back in the IBM Corporate days, this was a local airport for the IBM Poughkeepsie and Fishkill plant locations.

I will be getting this one. One main reason for me is because of the military part of the airport. I have lots of military AI in my P3D, but not much scenery at all for it.

When I was actively flying as a PPL, I flew in to SWF several times. Landing on an 11,000+ foot runway in a C-172 was always fun.

Back then, the Air National Guard flew C-5 Galaxies out of SWF. Now they are equipped with C-17s.

There is a Textron service center on the field which supports major maintenance on Beech / Citation / Hawker aircraft. The airport was also the home of the General Electric corporate flight department (since closed), which flew Boeing BBJs.

Kalitta Air has a 747-400 freighter based there, which does a daily round trip to LAX and back, and both UPS and FedEx use it as a regional hub, with nightly flights to Louisville and Memphis.

Despite having a runway that would support the very largest airliners, most of the airline traffic at SWF is smaller regional aircraft like the CRJ and ERJ.

There have been many proposals over the years to make SWF a major alternative to EWR/LGA/JFK, but none of those plans have ever come to fruition. The airport is just a bit too far from the NYC metro area.

I’ll definitely give this new scenery a try.

Thanks guys, all these personal stories were a nice read! Definitely seems like a very versatile airport. If any of you end up getting the scenery, I'm curious to hear your opinions. When it gets to to 20$ range, I usually don't outright buy...

Also, if anybody knows of any military C17 AI traffic that could be sued with this airport, would be lovely too!

EDIT: Actually, I believe this might be it? https://militaryaiworks.com/download-hangar/file-library/download/68-united-states-of-america/157-amc-east-coast-c-5-s

It includes the 105th, which is the one at SWF?

Did my first cross country training flight from KFRG-KSWF as a student pilot with my instructor. Looking forward to some 1st impressions.

Yes, the 105th Airlift Wing is the ANG Air Mobility Command squadron based at Stewart, and the base also hosts Marine Aircraft Group 49, which operates the C-130.

Thanks, good to know! Unfortunately, it doesn't seem as though these divisions are part of the updated P3Dv4-compatible MAIW Matrix...

Hi Folks,

I learned out of KMGJ/KPOU so KSWF was a routine stop...

One night we were doing some routine night work around 2100 - called up Stewart - controller had a very thick "NYC accent" - from our initial call you could tell the controller wasn't really happy to have us bothering him - no other traffic - after the first time around the pattern he started complaining we had a "crappy radio" and he couldn't hear us well - we checked everything and switched to com2 - he started complaining again - we knew we didn't have two "crappy radios" but we diligently checked everything again switching back to com1 - on our next transmission - same deal more complaints from Mr. Sunshine - finally a JBU A320 around 10 miles out comes up - he's like "Stewart Tower - I don't know what you're celebrating but we hear Skyhawk 64281 loud and clear - perhaps you need to check YOUR communication gear" - lol - redemption... He was a bit more pleasant after that but we didn't stay much longer...

Regards,
Scott

It was an AF Reserve base with a Wing of C-5Bs and I think a Marine squadron of C-130s.  I visited KSWF back then when I was still an active engineer to assist the base civil engineer in a grounding survey.  That was a very nice business trip, some of the best Italian food I've had outside of Italy.

Yup just said what Jim already said.
