Jimi Hendrix

Way back in 1967, I was with a stranger, a young American guy I had befriended in Marble Arch, as I showed him the Cumberland Hotel, and he wanted me to show him a nightclub, and the only one I knew  was the 100 Club on Oxford Street, London, and afterwards we went looking for a cafe, and as I worked in Tottenham Court Road, the only one I knew that stayed open late was on Denmark Street, tucked away off Charing Cross Road, a road that had so many musical instruments shops along it. And who should also be in there? A young Jimi Hendrix, his Irish red-haired bass man, Noel Redding, and his drummer Mitch Mitchell, all sipping espressos, etc. Not being musically au fait at the time, I had no idea who he was, or they were.🤣

Life,eh, can cross some strange paths without one realising it!

4 Fenders

Started in one cheapest box cheapest everything acoustic, ended up with 4 of those I used to stand and gaze wistfully, off Piccadilly Circus, London, 1966, US imports selling for £199, which in those days was .............well, a great deal of dosh!

Custom Shop(USA), Deluxe(USA), MiM(2 with imported 57/62 pups, Trevor Wilkinson-modified bridges)+Vox valve amp &  acoustics--- Yamaha, Tanglewood, US import D'Angelico

I can't play anything but basic right hand melodies on a keyboard, vaguely. Never had the dedication to learn guitar, but I blame my wife for that: She could play basic guitar stuff, strumming and chords etc. which meant she was of course far better than me. That was never the issue. The issue was she never re-strung the old cheap guitar I picked up from a car boot sale which was set up for right handers. 😜 Just like the late, great Jimi Hendrix, I am left handed and I "play" the XBOX game Guitar Hero with lefty flip applied. 😄

In the 80's I got into listening to new wave stuff, electronic and synth including Jean-Michel Jarre. I then got into Heavy Metal/Power Metal/Heavy Rock and do like some good old rock and roll. All sorts really. If I like the tune, I like the tune, enough said!I have many and varied tastes in music!

I did once own an Octave CAT synth I bought from a work colleague, messed about with it for a bit, never did get the money back which I paid for it. This isn't me, just a vid found from youtube..

Rock and Roll will never die IMHO. I seem to partially remember a quote which might have been from Martin Degville - lead singer from Sigue Sigue Sputnik - written on the insert in one of their albums along the lines of "In the far future, a guy will walk into a spacer's bar of an orbiting station and there'll be 3 chord rock n roll belting out of a jukebox in the corner"

I told you I have varied tastes in "music" 😎

And there is absolutely nothing weird or strange about it, at all. Mark. If we all had the same musical tastes, music and musicians would not exist any more than if we all followed the same choices for meals, drinks, politics, religion, et al.........Like my old man used to hammer into my thick skull,............variety is the spice of life!🤣

Well, about 10 years ago I thought about taking up the guitar after hearing a guy sitting outside of Whole Foods in Boca Raton, Florida strumming the opening chords to "Stairway to Heaven"  with bunch of people gathered around him. I said to myself, I'd like be able to play that someday as well....

A word to the wise. If you go to a guitar shop to demo an instrument, do not play “Stairway to Heaven”, (or “Iron Man”, or “Smoke on the Water”, or “Sweet Child O’ Mine”) lest you get yelled at by the staff...

Good on ya Bill. It takes real fortutude to overcome something like that. When I got my cancer diagnosis I thought my world had ended. But then I realized I was still here and there were many others far worse off than I. I take a lot of inspiration from your story. I can only imagine what you went through.

Year ago I had a personal website with a lot of mp3 recordings of many of the things I've worked into my repertoire. Unfortunately Comcast decided to discontinue offering free webspace so the entire contents were flushed into oblivion. About the same time the HD on one of the computers that had the .mp3 files archived died... :bengong:

Here is one of the five .mp3 files that I've managed to recover out of the several hundred I'd recorded over the years. This is a fun piece I played one time as a recessional hymn at St. Michael's parish in Patterson, NJ many years ago. It was fun watching young Fr. Anthony literally dancing down the aisle...

Mobile rig: ASUS Zenbook UM425QA (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H APU @3.2 GHz and boost disabled, 1 TB M.2 SSD, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 Pro). Running FS9 there .

VKB Gladiator NXT Premium Left + GNX THQ as primary controllers. Xbox Series X|S wireless controller as standby/mobile.

So many musicians !   I've played and gigged as a bass guitarist on a semi pro basis since the age of 17. (I'm 62 now) Mainly Rock and Blues/  Currently missing being able to play live due to the whole Coronavirus thing - hopefully venues will open again soon.   Every gig we had over the summer has been cancelled.  ☹️

Currently own 5 basses along with an electric 6 string and an accoustic.  My greatest fear is that if anything ever happens to me, my wife sells them for what I told her I paid for them !

I've always been amazed how many musicians there are in flight sim.  I've been a part of private groups only to learn that 90% or better were musicians.  I myself am a drummer/would be percussionist.

Anyway, good on you!

Well, I really don't quite know how to say this. Except that I'm stunned. I can always tell when someone truly plays by the feel of the music and not just the notes. And this is one of the best pieces in that regard I've ever heard. I just wish we could get together sometime and have you tell me how that "jazzed up" version came to be.  Any chance you can post the links to the other four?....Doug
