This topic is opening a box of worms...and so many opinions!

I'm still using the P3d v4.5 (no plans on v5) and purchasing MS2020 a week after release on my birthday.

P3Dv5 MFS 2020 is game

Oh my God..a game!! Yes, it is realistic, beautiful, the most perfect global representation up to this point, amazing weather system...but...it is a game...

Let me stick with my outaded platform just because it does not have an entertainment license and is provided by a real defense contractor, afterall, having fun is only meant for games and I could never be seen playing one!!

Such a weak argument...

Game mentality is not correct when speaking of sophisticated simulators.  I have not, nor will I ever refer to P3d or MSFS 2020 as a "game"!

I hate playing video games.

It is a game. It can also be a simulator.

It's a game, from a games studio, that simulates a simulator, created by game designers, who have designed 18 games. It is distributed by Xbox games, and exactly the same software will be released for Xbox gaming consoles.

Stan, welcome to the gaming world!

The whole game vs simulator argument has been about for years and is moot in my honest opinion.

It's just a way for self-certified 'serious simmers' to distance themselves from the riff-raff that is the video gamer! Ultimately they're all a graphical representation of flying an aeroplane on a screen, whether you call it a game or a simulator.

Whether we regard anything as a game or a simulator is, to some extent, about our personal approach to using it. Monopoly is a board game for fun, but even so it does simulate the basic principles of how to go about being a landlord and making money from owning properties. Likewise with flying games.

A flying game could have the worst flight model in the world, but if I told someone to fire it up, go to full throttle, take off from a runway, fly straight ahead in a slight climb until they got to 600 feet altitude, then turn left 90 degrees whilst still climbing, then when they got to 800 feet turn left 90 degrees again, then continue climbing but level off at 1,000 feet by reducing the throttle gradually until they were no longer climbing, that flying game would have still allowed me to teach someone how to join the downwind circuit pattern exactly like they should do in a real aeroplane, irrespective of the game not having a realistic flight model.

So it would be an effective simulator in that regard at least, and the latest version of MS flight Sim, or XPlane or P3D is no different in its ability to do this task than the very first version of SubLogic's Flight Simulator. The only difference really, is the visuals.

We got hold of a proper licensed simulator, as used by the Air Force as a training device. As it was a procedural flight simulator, the graphics were simplified & run off a second computer. So, superb visuals do not a simulator make.

Years ago, before I started flying lessons, in the weeks preceding me starting them, in addition to reading several flying manuals, I also rigged up a stick (literally a wooden stick) and two flat pieces of wood attached on hinges to a board suspended from a bungee cord. This I used to practice coordinating stick and rudder movements. No visuals whatsoever, just that knocked up wooden contraption with me practicing the habit of moving my feet in combination with my hand on the stick to get into the habit of coordinating hand and foot movements.

This could I suppose be regarded as some kind of 'procedural training simulator' if you want to call it something fancy, but it was nothing more than a few bits of wood. That's about as simple a flight simulator as you could ever get, but considering they sent me solo after 7 hours and 15 minutes of dual, I guess it might possibly have done some good.

90% of flying is mental, only 10% physical.  Once you've got your mind trained, the body catches up quickly.

Whether you're flying subLogic or a broom handle or the most modern training simulator, you're only training your mind.  The actual aircraft train your body.

Stan, welcome to the gaming world!

I recall, right at the start of this whole 2020 thing, a guy (who's name I sadly cannot remember) was hounded out of Avsim for saying just that. When I say 'hounded' it means he got totally sick of the enmity he left. This guy actually worked in the gaming industry.

Funny old world.
