ATC is a bust...

also going to be hard when the taxiways are not marked correctly in the game. Going to have to stare at the airport chart to figure out which way to go.

Yeah, and with the default GPS the way it is, forget trying to do any IFR under /G on the network. /A or /U revival!

Yeah Signage needs a lot of work.

Maybe Navigraph had sometime to do with this bad signage , more sales for them  😛

ATC has been one of the more demanded features in all the updates Asobo gave us, so I expect they will fix it throughout the year. The release date was rushed for some reason we don't know, but I trust they will listen to the community and put some serious efforts into fixing ATC. It cannot be that no sim in the market has managed to make ATC work well in 2020. Neither P3D nor X-Plane... Aerofly FS2 even discarded recently by the time being.
We need an ATC that works well in any IFR or VFR conditions and keeping AI planes or real players coordinated.

@Dillon, My experience with ATC has been about the same as yours. I gave up.

This is feedback I gave through Zendesk:

I did a flight from KLAS to KLAX in the TBM using a routing frequently assigned to turboprops in the real world. No SID but the KIMMO3 arrival starting at the Palmdale VOR (PMD). Filed altitude was FL220.

1. After taking off and contacting departure, I was told to climb and maintain 10,000 and proceed to CRESO (my first fix) "as planned". What should have happened was a heading to intercept a course to CRESO i.e. "turn left heading 130. Intercept V538. Resume own navigation" or cleared "direct CRESO" since the plane is RNAV equipped. "As planned" phraseology needs to go.

2. I was never cleared to my filed altitude. Instead I was held at 10000 until I figured out that I could request higher a little over halfway through the route. ATC should automatically clear to higher altitudes without the pilot having to request manually.

3. I was given so many frequency changes, I lost count at around 25. That needs to be refined somehow. It is completely unrealistic to get a new frequency every time you cross a sector boundary.

4. I was given a descent to 13000 and flew the KIMMO3 arrival but was never allowed to descend to the altitudes depicted on the arrival. Instead I was held at 13000 all the way until the final fix on the arrival at the DARTS intersection.

5. At DARTS I was told to expect the ILS 24R approach and then directed to maintain less than 170 knots and proceed to CRCUS as planned. DARTS is 15 nm from KLAX....CRCUS is an initial approach fix for the ILS 24R 46nm east of KLAX. That caused me to fly outbound from KLAX for 30nm just to turn around and fly back inbound on the ILS (which actually went fairly well...ATC assigned descents too often but I can overlook that for those that don't have the approach plate sitting in front of them).

Now as to the repeated instruction to maintain less than 170 knots, I was flying around 150 indicated airspeed...My true airspeed and groundspeed, however, were showing around 190. I'm guessing that ATC was referencing ground speed and that caused the repeated . Indicated airspeed should be reference, not TAS or GS.

My experience is exactly like you described above. Point 5 happened to me as well and was super annoying. I ended up just ignoring ATC and riding the ILS in without clearance.

I also had similar experiences and altitude clearances that are ridiculous. One flight it was descend to 13000...5 seconds later maintain 14000...5 seconds later descend to 13000...over and over.

Everyone understands feet. Not everyone who will be using this program however, especially newbies, will know what the heck a flight level is.

If the lingo is real world people need to learn.  Learning the correct way makes the whole experience more satisfying in the long run.

I see your point. I wonder though if we’re asking almost the impossible from a default atc? The time and effort involved I think would be better spent on the flight model, weather issues and so on.

I just want it to work at least as good as it’s worked since FS2k2...

All i can say is "Wizzair 6598 you are 20.000 feet above your assigned altitude. Descend and maintain 9.000 feet." :P

I have seen some problems with ATC.

I flew out of KJAC. On clearance, ATC told me to climb to 5,000 feet. That would have been a good trick, because KJAC is at 6400 feet. Maybe they thought I was flying a mining drill.

I have noticed that it tends to descend me late, and often does rapid fire altitude changes. "Descend to 9000 feet," and before I can even finish dialing that in I get "descend to 6400 feet" and then almost immediately "descend to 6,000 feet."

On the other hand on a flight inbound to KNEW it descended me extremely early, and had me down to 1,700 feet long before I even got to Lake Pontchartrain.

However I'm also noticing some improvements over FSX. In the above-mentioned attempt to have me climb to below field elevation, I obviously declined to comply. The old system would have kept telling me to descend to 5,000 feet until I actually did it, and only then would it have ordered a climb. This system saw that I was at 7,000 feet and told me to climb to 11,000. Much better. It's also not waiting until I hit the exact ordered altitude before giving me another climb instruction. Instead if everything's clear it'll clear me to a higher altitude before I hit the previous one, so that the plane can just keep climbing instead of settling at the lower altitude and then having to do another VS order.

Yeah, it'd be nice if that could get fixed. It'd also be nice if ATC would recognize other players, and not clear me to land when there's already a player-flown airplane blocking the final approach path.

I haven’t used it since FS2002 as it’s unrealistic and junk.

Some feel that way. Some don't.

There are times in this world where I may call something a wrench, even if the technical name might be adjustable spanner.

As long as the kids know what I'm talking about, and hand me the correct thingy, I'm fine, and likely wont appreciate it if a plumber abruptly appears to tell me the precise name and inform me I will feel better if I pronounce said name correctly.

In fact, knowing me, I will deliberately henceforth start calling it a screwdriver. 😺

It's called accessibility.

90-95% of the people playing (yes, playing!) this sim are looking for a good time, not looking for a job.

ATC is horrible....was really hoping after I saw the SIDS/STARS option in early previews...

- there wouldn't be vectoring all around the place

-I wouldn't have to level off while climbing to my cruise altitude

-descent would be better coordinated

also sometimes clicking an option on the ATC menu doesnt respond. Really needs alot of work but has alot of potential.
