Sounds like that’s really triggered you.

Really? Point specifically to the words used in my reply that would lead a reasonable person to come to that conclusion?

Would you like some cheese with your whine?

ok, back on track or this one goes. An insulting comment was posted, the poster has been chastised and defended - end of story. Move on.

Thanks for the advice, but the "overexcited kids" comment isn't exactly a way to win friends and influence people...

Remember, these "KIDS" - myself included (thought the mass of grey hairs on my head would say otherwise) -  ARE doing this in our spare time and donating the results.  I agree LODs are very important (hence my previous post), but they do take a fair bit of time and no one's getting paid for the fruits of their labor.  Those who release professional scenery without an LOD strategy ARE committing a strategic error - I certainly agree with that - but I cant really fault someone putting out a 3D model of an area they are passionate about for FREE and not going through the time consuming process of building up several levels of detail.  No one is forced to download it, and in many cases it won't even net a significant bang for the buck on modern gaming hardware if all you're adding are a few buildings.  As I also mentioned in my OP, I built this package initially for myself and it runs pretty great on my system as is.  Regardless, I am absolutely continuing to invest some time with additional LOD layers for several reasons, one of which is to actually allow even higher detail when I get close - and paying for that increase by swapping in lower res versions in the distance.  I work in the visual effects industry (hence the sig) and you are preaching to the choir here.

Your message is fine, just 'fine tune' the tone if your goal is to promote better community practices.

p.s. Unity is bunk, the industry is fully embracing Unreal for realtime in production

If you were any experienced in real time rendering and appropriate tool sets, you would have taken the model that you ripped from Google maps, send it through any software that can do automated poly reduction, export three different version for different viewing distances and set them up in FS2020. I hear the kids using Blender these days.

Believe me, there is a difference between any VFX work that you are doing and real time rendering, apparently.

Perhaps you should get a refund.

I know what you mean, but just let it go.    It would be a shame for the thread for this nice contribution to get locked because one particular individual can't stop grinding their axe even after a moderator warning.

Quite happy to be banned if it means those who constantly throw insults at people who give their time and efforts to produce free software for others to enjoy are held to account. Check his post history. It's pretty much all he does. Plus, I've not ground any axe. He's unhappy with a product so I've suggested he apply for a refund. Seems eminently sensible.

I wasn't referring to you there, my friend.   🙂   I'm with you on this one.

Certainly some room for improvement but not bad at all

And if you were more experienced in the art of not being obnoxious I might be interested in carrying this conversation further.  The fortunate thing about anonymous internet exchanges is that you don't know who you are insulting at the other end.  You might be a bit embarrassed to find out.  I guess they don't teach manners at whatever real time hobby classes you take?

Anyhow, if you actually had a bit more experience you'ld realize that the time sink is dealing with nonconvex tetrahedral meshes which is what you get from google map photogrammetry.  It can survive one generation of reduction fairly well, but go farther and it tends to break apart, so you have to rebuild a proxy mesh to maintain the shape.  Eh, but what do kids know these days?

I wonder if a mod will eventually appear that simply streams and produces scenery on the fly using Google data rather than Bing. LOL.

Ironically, it seems Bing is one of the best things to happen to flight sims but also one of the key limitations of this sim at the same time.

You shouldn't even really bother with him.

This is what he said Wednesday in another post:

"Uninstalled. Will check back on the sim in a year or so and grab it on deep sale 50% off at least. This is just not enough. Have fun with the 1 buck for the first gamepass month, Microsoft. What a trainwreck of a release"

He's has a whole dollar invested, and he basically rage-quit.   Its apparent his agenda is not one to be an actual contributor of knowledge, and based on most of his other 57 posts, seems to be only here to complain about how bad the sim is or tell people how wrong they are at creating scenery.

There is a name for his kind, and we all know what it is. 😉  Any of his further posts should categorially ignored since he doesn't even "have a horse in this race" and will be waiting for the title to go on a deep sale of at least 50% before anything he says will actually be from an owner's point of view.  Gotta' wonder why he's even bothering to post here at all?

Thanks sd_flyer.  Working on a version with higher closeup detail as we speak!  Enjoy it in the meantime 😉

It doesn't help a bit when the current SDK is about as opaque as a blank blackboard. Nothing is truly explained well yet!

I only know enough about scenery development to usually keep egg off of my face. I've been poly-bending and programming systems for aircraft for close to 30 years though, so do know more than a little bit on that subject. The "new paradigm" for glTF modeling is a real challenge since a group of us have been spending time "reverse engineering" some things which have no explanation whatsoever yet. 😉

Fortunately for us though is that for user flown aircraft LODs are simply not necessary. 😎
