Orbx Southern Rockies...

Featured Replies

It seems like I've been waiting years for Orbx to release Southern Rockies.  It's shown on their region maps.

Is it going to be left behind in favor of XPlane and MSFS?

Noel

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

Wouldn't surprise me. Seems they release very little for P3D these days in favour of MSFS. Haven't spent a dime with them for months.

You never know. With the recent announcement of the resurrection of the Asian regions the Southern Rockies project could pop up again.

In fairness, they did a pretty good job with the US land class that currently covers the Southern Rockies. It would be nice, though, to see augmented depictions of Pikes Peak, Gunnison Gorge, and similar.  I do a lot of flying based out of KAPA (Centennial), an Orbx-enhanced freeware airport, to points north, west, and south.

If you were Orbx, where would you currently be spending your energy?

Bert

If I were OrbX, I would keep my promises. But then we've been waiting for the Cote d'Azur scenery for almost 5 years.

Keeping promises is so yesterday. People will only laugh. 🐱

I certainly wouldn't be dumping the old customers for new ones.

There is an old saying in the UK what goes around comes around, I will not be buy anymore Aerosoft products you know why even for MSFS not that buy any now but in the future.

Yeap that's what msfs needs right now more scenery 🙄

I don't understand Orbx at the moment, it's like selling hot dogs at the front door of a steak house. Don't get me wrong msfs is visually stunning but still a "dum" down simulator.

I highly doubt they are dumping old customers.  I would bet that most of Orbx customers are previous FSX and P3D customers that had already left for MSFS or have stopped buying P3D products.

Orbx is just following the money and just making a smart business move to survive.  As MSFS improves, and in a year or two, when all the complex planes like PMDG, FSLabs, Majestic, etc, are available in MSFS I highly doubt there will be much of a market left for P3D developers.  I am grateful that P3D filled a void when development and support stopped for FSX. I have spent, as a lot of people here have, a lot of money on scenery and add-on planes. I really enjoyed P3D. Its been a great ride,  but I find myself wanting to fly in MSFS more and more. Especially with the  Flybywire A320Nx.  I know that once PMDG 737, Majestic Dash 8, Aerosoft CRJ are out for MSFS, P3D will very likely be collecting dust on my PC.

These larger add-on developers have seen their revenue staring to dry up already when MSFS was announced and even more impacted since release of MSFS.  When you read that some of these developers have announced they are no longer actively developing for FSX, P3D, I sure they are not making that decision lightly. As I said already, they are just following the money and unfortunately, its not with FSX/P3D.

I remember when it was called Arapahoe County Airport, hence the APA.

Rickjake, I have over 3,000 dollars invested in Orbx Scenery and there is no way I am going to dump that investment because a shiny new toy has appeared on the market.  I have too large an investment in both scenery and aircraft for FSX-P3D to simply give it up.  I am not wealthy enough to dump what I am perfectly satisfied with just because another new simulator has come on the market and all the new scenery and aircraft I would need to go with it.

I've played that game long enough.  It's time to be satisfied with what I already have.

That’s understandable, but if everyone stuck with what they have and never moved to newer versions of FS, we'd never have any forward progress. That goes for just about every consumer good.

If everyone who had bought 300 VHS movies said I’ll never leave for DVD or streaming video, we’d all still be stuck going to Blockbuster to rent movies, no?

There’s always going to be a few who want to remain with what they have, either for financial reasons or because, like you, they are satisfied with what they already have. But, I think history shows that a lot of people like or want to move up to the next advancement in tech and are willing to put aside the money they spent on last years gadget or software and start with the newer version. Just think of people who are obsessed with iPhones. They spend $700 or more on the latest and greatest one, then are found camping outside the Apple store a year later to buy the newest release.

While MSFS still has bugs and lacks helicopters and other popular aircraft, the development community has come to the conclusion that through its apparent planned 10 year development cycle, it will probably be the premier or go to sim for the majority of the community, that is until FS2030 is rolled out and we begin the cycle again.

We still have people like edetriot who are happily flying along with FS9 and might continue to stick with it the remainer of his life even though developers and the majority have moved on.

That’s just the nature of progress, some people,  like you, will be disappointed but will remain with what you have, while the masses move on.

Btw, full disclosure, I’m still using an iPhone 6s Plus because it does everyhing I need and will continue to use it until it frankly won’t work anymore and then I will have to move on to a never model😂

I understand, and I sympathize with you. I too have a small fortune in paid add-ons. But that does not change the fact, that technology and people move forward and will leave you behind.  "cmpbellsjc's post" above said everything I was going to respond with, so no sense in repeating it here.

P3D and all your existing add-ons are not going anywhere.  You will still be able to enjoy your existing platform for years to come. It just would be unreasonable to expect  continued development and support from add-on developers, for an older platform to continue.

P3D was never really meant to be a consumer, entertainment product. It was geared towards commercial and military training. I suspect P3D itself will continue to be developed for there intended target. Who knows, maybe P3D v6 will be a huge game changer.  I doubt it though, as it would need to be re-written from the ground up.  Kind of like Boeing and there 737Max. Nice plane, new engines, new electronics, etc, but still an old 60's era  body.  Only so much you can do to make it modern.
