Orbx Van Nuys is out

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if the real airport has taxiway centerline lighting (green)?  Also I'm seeing the small parallel lit with green centerline lighting....which is really weird.  Real world says medium intensity edge lights on RY16L.  Of course when the tower is closed RWY 16L is unlit and closed as well.  Maybe a MSFS bug?

I think the green centerline lights might be there by default and might not be changeable yet.  Not 100% sure though.

In any case, unfortunately this airport is very very low res (texture wise).  The windsock is also floating. The flags are not animated.  This is just off a quick passthrough. No 3d hangar signs or anything like that.

I'd give it a OK rating.

Thanks Jeff it sounds as bad as the textures at KBUR. Was going to replace KBUR with this but I think I will now pass.

seems to me orbx has stepped down in quality a lot.

Low resolution textures are completely unacceptable in 2021, and particularly so in Microsoft/Asobo's new poster child. If I make the switch from P3D to Microsoft Flight Simulator, I certainly do not want to be seeing any low resolution textures at addon airports.

@ryanbatcund,  Just looking at Jeppesen  KVNY 10-9 Chart mentions "Taxilane A2/A3 have unidirectional centreline lights".

I also had a quick look on google maps and could see clearly the individual centreline light installations. So they did get it right.

Hope that Sheds some light on your question, pardon the pun.

I was bitterly disappointed with their EGKA blatant port from an older Sim, it was truly bad but I eventually got a refund which I spent on the Optica plane and even though it was patched at the weekend that still suffers from issues i reported to them weeks ago.

Plus the Iceland mesh, which albeit is free, is not very good in terms of draw distance as you can see the mountains literally terraforming before your very eyes! Apparently this doesn't happen with their paid for NZ mesh, but having tried the free I'm reluctant to pay for anything as it doesn't set a good precedent.

Prior to MSF I'd heard good things about ORBX, but so far I'm far from impressed and have grown ever more sceptical about their level of quality in releases.

I immediately noticed the low textures in the preview shots of Van Nuys. Looking at hangar roof tops etc., I can clearly see pixels and that it is not crisp and hi-def as would be expected in 2021. Pity.

I agree with some other posts here, i bought quite a few of their initial offerings, but recently their quality does seem to have dropped quite a bit. If you look at some of the stuff, the renouned devs are producing, and even a few newcomers, are raising the game. Producing some stunning  additions.

I have formed the same impression of ORBX in regard to MSFS. It is nice to have proper buildings in the correct places, but the pictures did not look convincing at all. Texture work needs to be substantially improved; the quality looks to me to be at the P3D level. In that simulator nearly any custom work looked better than the base simulator and so back then I would often purchase, but not in MSFS. It is too bad too, these airports, KBUR and KVNY, I am sure are popular destinations. I picked up KBUR and was really not impressed so I will pass on KVNY. There are new developers producing much better looking, more convincing scenery.

This happens all Over MSFS and is super annoying. Ruins the immersion.

I've seen it happen but not as bad as the Iceland ORBX mesh which is awful for it.

Yup, it’s not as bad in some places as it is in others. However whenever it does happen, which is most of the time, it’s awful. Your tried the new landing challenge in the caravan? The mountain is shape shifting all around as you approach.
