Where are all our major scenery developers?

Featured Replies

From FlyTampa, FSDreamteam, to FlightBeam it seems they have gone dark in the last few months concerning FS2020.  I've been waiting for KTPA, KMSP, KPHX, and KBOS to name a few and the lag time in bringing their work to FS2020 is all but at a crawl if at all.  There's freeware out there daily for smaller fields and the like but our major developers that have been cranking out scenery for years are missing in action for the most part now.  I look at the just released KMDW update from a freeware guy and think where the heck it FlyTampa?  TNCM would be nice to see from FT as well.  I know some are going to have snarky remarks but it's just a question as this has never happened before.  With past releases of Flight Simulator these guys are usually upgrading and cranking it out immediately.  I understand PMDG and the aircraft side of this but scenery is a different matter.  If freeware guys can produce product on the level we used to see daily for FS9 (all looking like Orbx quality by the way) something is missing in the equation for me.  What's the reason for the crawl in upgrading and releasing scenery from our major add-on developers?

I see new airports and scenery released almost every other day at https://fselite.net/.  OrbX is releasing so many different sceneries every other week, it's hard to keep track of what they are releasing.  Maybe you are waiting for more US scenery to be released?

To be fair, a lot of US and Europe scenery was released in the first few months of MSFS.  Other scenery developers are playing catchup with the rest of the world (ie. some scenery for South America and Asia are finally starting to come out in the last few months).  Maybe your question is better changed to why is US scenery not being released as fast as you want it to.  Because a lot of scenery is being released for MSFS in general (just check https://fselite.net/).

I asked this question myself a few days ago, thus @Dillon at least isn't the only one with it. Now, it isn't that there is no scenery, Payware and Freeware alike, released for MSFS, just to the contrary. Effectively it's a mixed bag with quite a number of good ones (take SimWings or Gaya) or even real pearls (the soon to be released NZA Nelson will certainly be a milestone, according to Mr. Filbert) but also a number of slouches (nothing to be named here, but we know them).

However, the time where FlyTampa, FSDreamteam, to FlightBeam or whoever worked for a couple of years on a major airport project seems to be gone (recall MSFS was released a year ago). So, my observation is a lot of newcomers entering the scene, including a few really gifted ones, with the veterans (with the possible exception of FSDreamteam) perhaps having difficulty to keep the pace.

And while ORBX has a lot of MSFS seneries, several of their trusted famous developers seem to have made place for new blood. As a result, it's my impression (without counting) a number of their traditional airpoirts in the US and Australia being missing, while quite a number of new ones, including several in Europe, were added.

And no, it's not that they started publishing for P3D or XP en masse, at least not that I know.

Anyway, I won't complain as long as the number of good MSFS sceneries is still bigger than those I am able to buy and manage.

Kind regards, Michael

I'm not talking about Europe (I should have been clearer)...🥺  That area has been more than covered by the likes of Aerosoft and others with more to come. My question is, how is it we have FlyTampa as a developer and not KTPA almost a year into FS2020's release?  This didn't happen with FSX nor FS9 and certainly not P3D.  I'm talking about US international airports that are done like KIAH, KPHX, KBOS, and KMSP to name a few (as I said in my original post).  We have developers that offer these sceneries for the legacy FSX code (P3D) yet are slow rolling the effort for FS2020.  I'm sure most can't answer this but with the way things are going if they wait too long a comparable freeware offering will be on the table and they'll loose any profit they could have had.   Some are making newer efforts while their customer are waiting for the existing work to be carried over.  I'm not understanding the logic here with some of these developers unless their closing their doors.😐

I’m particularly puzzled about why Orbx haven’t ported more of their legacy Australia airports. Perhaps they’re waiting for a WU to cover it, but would love their Coff’s Harbour and Cessnock, for old times’ sake.

I'm not so sure we want that.  Which also leads to my opinion about why were not seeing more from the big dev houses.  P3d ports etc don't look wonderful, imo especially up close.  I own Orbx Burbank and Santa Barbara...and both look quite sub par when you taxi up to the gate or GA ramp.

So I think we need brand new textures which takes a long time to make - perhaps that is the hold up?

I fail to understand why Orbx hasn't done EGHI Southampton as yet for MSFS. I would've thought it would be the first one they would do. Such beautiful photogrammetry around the airport and yet, no news from Orbx on this at all. Very puzzling.

I don’t really spend any time looking for scenery tbh. Just a/c.

The way MSFS 2020 looks now, I seriously doubt if I will buy any scenery again. The default airports look like P3D payware.

KBOS is a big one for me - Developer mentioned in FT forum mentioned KBOS is second in line - something else first cant remember which one - east coast doesnt get much luv 😞 especially from ORBX

I believe FT is already working on LGAV and TNCN and Flight Beam is doing Auckland and Toulouse (both close to release).

I think its after LGAV that sounds familiar but didnt see anything about TNCM but makes sense

I think they posted a terminal (maybe interior) pic quite a while back on their FB page for TNCM.  I'd have to go back and look.

Potentially because there are posters both here and on the MS main forums that absolute hammer port overs and throw total tantrums if any new product does not use brand new entirely custom textures and all the new MS features 😄

More likely though they are working on full MS products and do not want to undermine the market for those with an early port over.
