September 3, 20214 yr Years ago I read this about flyers and they said that the best part of flying a plane was the landing. Today I believe that because it is the landing for me. I guess that it is all the judgmental skills required to do it correctly (and not kill anyone) but the actual precision on the touchdown is what gives me the best satisfaction. I am questioning today if the new XBoxr's will get to experience or appreciate this important point but if they do then MSFS will have achieved one of it's important goals it seems. September 3, 20214 yr I am guessing most will give up when they realize that nothing shoots out of the pitot tube and go back to whatever else is on the menu. Hopefully though, a few will take it seriously and study. I was a kid when the very first MS Flight simulator came out and quickly discovered the flaps button and like you, discovered the joy of landing. The individuals using this simulator have the advantage of the internet, whereas I had to go to the library. September 3, 20214 yr Is it just me, but I always felt that landings were not only the most fun I ever get from flight simming in general, but that FSX's landings were not that challenging. For whatever reason MSFS 2020's landings are much more difficult to do well whether GA or A320 than FSX ever was, and therefore more satisfying when you nail it! United001 FSX atmosphere was awful, little skill required landing anything IMHO. MSFS is a much better challenge. September 4, 20214 yr Is there a way to watch your landing after the fact from different camera angles?
September 4, 20214 yr Any landing that you can walk away from is a good landing. it's even better if you can fly the same plane again. Try slowing down, establishing a reasonable descent rate and landing the PMDG DC-6 without bending something! James M Driskell, Maj USMC (Ret)
September 4, 20214 yr I am flying the A320 FBW and always land manually. I am also a bit of a cowboy so don't fly conventionally. I dont use charts or fly at safe attitudes. Makes it more fun. Ever tried landing at a small mountain airport in Alaska in zero visibility with no ILS and using the terrain map to avoid hitting anything? Yesterday i landed at a 3000ft runway in the middle of Africa. Again I am flying as smoothly and safely as I can (not like a fighter pilot) but the element of risk opens up a new avenue of fun and really tests your flying skills. September 4, 20214 yr I thought I was OK at GA takeoffs and landings in MSFS until Neofly started making me load up with a full load of cargo and enough fuel for a longish trip and then takeoff and land from obscure grass strips with obstructions on departure and approach. Add some live weather for crosswinds and fog and suddenly the Cub or the 152 is not that "easy to land beginner aircraft" anymore.
September 4, 20214 yr This is why I like short flights in the bush or with powerful warbirds and changing the flying grounds with each flight. Of course it is great to have a lovely landscape passing by below you but the real fun is in the take off, approach and landing. Tuning a Garmin to get a perfect automated RNAV, naaah not for me, boring... September 4, 20214 yr I enjoy taking off's and landing in the PMDG DC-6 as that done right is as silky and smooth as can be when done right, but challenging? No. The Hardest/challenging aircraft to not only land but takeoff within MSFS are the Milviz FG-1D and FI Spitfire. As for a Carrier's in MSFS, no, pleae dont go there, its a joke, unless you feel like a game not a sim. None of the aircraft are anything like as challenging/rewarding as a F-14, F-18 on a carrier and then there are CAT 1 and then the big daddy of all landings...CATIII. If you love a challenge of landing thats the pinnacle of the challenging and the most rewarding you can do. Even a F-16 airfield landing is as rewarding as the FG/Spit to land, done right. Also A heli takes skill to land right. If the Heli is a good one, the only 2 in a sim I have used is the Dodo Bell and in another sim the Huey, both are high on the skill level chart. But airfield landing in the Milviz FG-1D and FI Spitfire are the most rewarding to me in MSFS by a mile. I love both of them. Edited September 4, 20214 yr by Nyxx David Murden.
