Terrain pre-caching thread

I understand we do need to see something moving while loading the sim etc.

Actually the spinning circle means the sim is logging/sending data. Why we need to be informed I know not.

What exactly does each LOD cover?

Honestly I don't know exactly.  My understanding is that Terrain does things like ground textures, tree distance, hill/topographic feature details, while Object does things like buildings/towers/any man-made structure.  My experience is that Terrain LOD causes more load on my system than Object LOD does, but that was only post SU5; I haven't tested for SU6.

Hi, everyone,

It's impossible to fly.

Every attempt becomes a CTD!

I'm going to uninstall MSFS and then install it again.

No add-ons, no MSI Afterburner. No nothing!

I'm very angry!

Regards.

Why isn't it using more of my system and GPU memory? Even with pre terrain caching set to ultra its still using only 9GB of system ram and 7GB of VRAM?

I have to guess you don't have it completely installed.  For me, it's using exactly what is needed to deliver ultra smooth, crisp textures, hitch-free panning up/down/sideways, and it's about what I would have guessed it would be versus prior to the update.  At EDDF (fabulous work of art) in the 787-10 all glass I'm seeing 10.3Gb peak VRAM in use, and about 13Gb of SysRAM.  Prior to the pre-caching option I would have been seeing maybe 7.8Gb of VRAM.  Yesterday I flew out of FSDT's KORD in very heavy weather w/ lightening strikes every few seconds in the same plane at dawn, and was seeing over 9Gb of VRAM in use.   The core engine is very well tuned now.  Just a few bugs to solve and a few features to add and it's becoming shockingly mature now a little over a year later including the Xbox release monkey wrench.  Remarkable magic by MS/Asobo

Oh, and these settings:  LOD 300, RS 120, all ultra, SSAA 8x.  I think the 3080Ti will hold its own and there will be no need for 3090 at this point unless DX-12 changes the picture very significantly, and I seriously doubt it will.  In fact, not sure what DX-12 will bring it's already as good as it needs to be, and yes a few bugs and the SDK need add'l work, as does the now one feature that causes persistent microstutter for me which is the annoying spinning console log indicator.  Fortunately by toggling Dev Mode on then off this kills the spinner and solves the microstutter associated w/ it.  I've zendesked it twice now and I expect they will get to it in due time.

I did the same pre WU6.  Intel/NVidia system. Helped quite a bit with loading during view changes. Posted it to help others and got flamed, basically I’d shoot my eye out, cause crashes, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria.
But I’ve left it enabled, and enjoyed some free performance ever since.

I guess we are a very small minorities that have the hardware capable for this. understandable but I saw a significant difference with it enabled.

I had to do that one during an update, as something became corrupted. On the new install I set a custom location which is D:/MSFS..... It is much better in a custom location now, and easy access to community folder.

Hi,

Yesterday I was very happy with the WU6 update.

But today it was horrible.

I had a lot of CTDs even in safe mode.

Well, Ian, I'm re-installing it in the same location.

But if it fails I'm going to install it on another disk unit.

Thank you.

I have a completely separate SSD drive with all of my flight sims on called the 'F' drive.  'F' for 'Flight Sims'.

It helps me remember where to install flight sim stuff now I am getting older.

Now, where did I put my keys!

Well, it's installing on C now (t's a Samsung M.2)...

Perhaps next time...

The case is that t since I bought it last year MSFS worked very well. I had very few CTDs.

It has been since SU5 that everything went wrong

I thought that with WU6 everything was going to be fine.

In fact, yesterday I have every flight without a problem.

I was very happy with the graphics, too.

Thank you.

I hope it all goes well and you can enjoy again without CTD..nothing is worse.

GL John.

Thank you, John.

It's very frustrating after so many years flying.

My first Flight Simulator was MS FS 3 (1988).

Since then I had every version until FSX.

Later I've bought Prepar3d.

And now... 😥
