so how would the engine know a particular surface was supposed be glass, or rough brick or whatever if it wasn't pre-baked in to the model??? I'd hate for the engine to try to guess rather than letting me choose where and how I want the effect on my models

if I'm not mistaken, this is exactly how FS2020 is doing with the use of "materials". From the look of the default textures and material assets in the game, I can see the set of textures which are used to define the "puddles" for example which the shader code is using to make it look like puddles. This doesn't seem to require any manual editing either because it is defined as a material (say bituminous for the sake of the example) which comprises the albedo, normals, etc... and not just a texture. By extension, the "material" approach is automatically making any rendered object benefiting from the advanced shader rendering of these effects throughout, wherever they are used.

To your question: the engine would know because it won't be pre-baked in the model, but in the material used by the model.

This is good stuff, and I love the sense of humor injected into it.

The psychedelic techno might not work for some people, but as a software engineer I definitely get it, and it's funny.

Hang in there Austin, Ben, and the rest of the team ...  you know you're up against a beast but keep at it.  These changes coming in XP-12 are daunting but if there are any programmers that can handle it, it's the LR team.  And I appreciate them getting in front of a camera and explaining exactly what's going on.

It explains the radio silence for a while, everyone was heads-down.

Wheels up!

Well, I like the form and the content. Well done.

Can't wait...

Continuing watching the video, and it's confirmed ambient sounds are included.  Cars on streets.  Tree leaves rustling in the wind.  CRICKETS!

😉

14:20 for the curious ones.

I admit the first time I saw that, I cringed. But then I found it very funny and re-watched it a few times.

That's exactly the kind of thing that would trigger the contempt of some "serious simmers" / LR haters. 😆

This is gonna breathe some new life into the visuals, for sure! So... with this weather thing and other stuff I can see myself POTENTIALLY getting rid of ActiveSky (unless HiFi retools it to suit the new weather engine)... Let's see.. what else from my setup will probably have to go? Beautiful XPlane Nights, VividSky, New Water Texture... Potentially HD Airport Environment. I think everything else should be fine.

Absolutely.  I'm not one to keep asking for the little things like moon phases (sorry @jcomm, cricket sounds, car traffic noise), but the fact they implemented them made my jaw drop, AND, the one that really threw me for a loop, is the wind noise adjusting in relation to high speed and low speed wind.  That was a showstopper right there.

I've known about a lot of this stuff, but never seen it.  Seeing it adds a whole new dimension.  LR have delivered in spades, and then some!

Does someone dare to make a calculated guess about a (beta)releasedate?

Established developers (developers in the LR private slack channel) get the first beta's after the in house testing.  So far, no one has got it.  Once we do get it, testing could take 1 month up to 3 months.

Rest assured, developers want it out just as desperately as the community does.

Just for fun, I'll make a completely uninformed and very cautious guess: second half 2022.

Time stamped.  Just hit play.  Section on airport sounds and ground equipment.

Sorry for not clarifying myself Goran. What i meant was scale size fuel trucks, Trucks with 13,000 gallon capacity. Smaller catering trucks for smaller craft. Lavatory service, and another one i never mentioned was deicing service trucks. Step vans  etc.

Ah, you want "the works" as far as ground equipment is concerned.

That one, I don't know, but if they aren't included, I can suggest them in the Slack channel.  A de-icing truck would look particularly cool.
