Simple traffic

Press install and forget it, I really like that, I mostly fly GA and rarely visit major airports so this program would suit me well, it seems easy to manage and fps friendly, so I will buy it if it get decent reviews.

I run at 60fps so it isn't much of an issue, but someone running 30 may think otherwise.

I run at 30 thru vsync.  It is helpful to know what the impact for those running unrestricted is as it gives a clue where one might need to rob Peter to Pay AIG or ST, and fortunately Peter can afford to trade for something like much better traffic.  Right now I adjust Terrain LOD to be assurred of always having enough main thread to maintain that critical 30fps.  So that means for example if in the 787 HD I'm flying out of FlyTamp KLAS to KSFO to be assurred of maintaining 30 I need to set Terrain LOD at 220.  Or, if in the TBM930 I'm flying out of Mariscal Sucre Quito International Airport to Simón Bolívar International Airport can easily manage Terrain LOD 400.  Fortunately, overall the benefits of LOD 400 over 220 isn't all that impressive so Terrain LOD has a poor cost:benefit ratio.

At least you don't have to twist yourself into a pretzel to install a one click add on. For many, and this goes back years, wrestling with AIG is a major PIA.

Amen to that!

I've really lost interest in doing this kind of thing to make something work, not now in 2022.  Been there, done that in FSX then P3D.

I seem to remember when AIG was in P3D, that the more complex the models, the heavier the load on the system trying to create them. Has anyone done a comparison of performance using AIG, versus the stock MSFS AI?  The other issue of course, is what happens when another SU drops, will AI users run into CTDs or some other problem?  Not worth seeing some nicer looking AI at the airport, and having your FPS go into the dumpster.

MSFS handles tons of AI a lot better than FSX/P3D does, but there is still a notable FPS hit in some areas.

For example EGLL is within AI spawning range of 2 other big airports (EGKK, EGSS), at around noon there's about 240 aircraft spawned, I drop from 55-60 to 30 FPS.

https://imgur.com/a/dM5Q7sn

However, that alo does depend on how many aircraft you can see at once. If I spawn at EGLC (default) instead of EGLL I'll still get 60 FPS even with the 240 AI aircraft, because there are only like 5-6 planes spawning there.

I believe the offline AI spawning range is around 90 miles.

I also don't have the best PC, so higher specs could handle it better.

That video didn't do ST any favors in my book.

All these complaints about the complexity of AIG are funny.  Most are from people who haven't even tried.  Just myself personally but I wouldn't trade the "complexity" of AIG for those horrible looking re-skinned models any day.  I mean that AI literally looks like it's from FS2k not FS2020 but if all you want is simple one click and could care less about quality then this looks like a great add-on.

AIG on the other hand is a labor of love from freeware dev's providing us with the most robust AI experience in Flight Simming and spending years of their time to deliver it to us for free.

So what message do I want to send?  1.  I support dev's who want to make a cheap easy add-on with no quality behind it and charge for it  OR  2.  I want to support he Dev's that have spent years dedicating their own time and efforts to provide us with the greatest AI offering we have in FS to date... Oh and they did it for free.

Seriously, take the 20 minutes to extract two files, point to the correct directories, download your AI files (This is what take the time) Load FS, load AIGTC, Press Inject and see realistic AI following their real world flight plans.

I mean it is literally extract two folders, click a few things, sit back and wait then press a single button once MSFS is running.

If that is "twisting yourself into a pretzel" to get something to work or more effort than you care to put forward to obtain a higher quality implementation then yep, ST is for you...  If you actually care what your AI looks like or are willing to do a few minutes setup and wait for the files to download so you can have realistic looking AI following real world flight plans then it's not LOL.  Pretty simple.  (no pun intended)

If it's that simple, then it should be just as simple to write a baby wrapper that downloads the files and does all that setup for you asking the appropriate qiestions at the appropriate time.

Whilst I agree with your sentiment regarding people who do things for free and make good products, I also am a believer in the phrase "Do not spoil the ship for a haporth of tar".

In this day and age, even with freeware,  with the structure of files provided by MSFS as opposed to the convaluted chaos of previous flight sims, there is, to my mind, absolutely zero reason to have anything other than a one click installer.  Yeah, if you want to set it so it operates on multiple sims at once.. thats work for you, but if you only have MSFS and want to add the product.. it should be one click only.  Or as Sean Connery would say.. "Give me a ping, Vasili. One ping only, please."

You see, I'm a lazy git, and to me, AI is nice to have, but frankly, I will BUY a product that is inferior, if it's easy to setup with one click than faf around, potentially changing core files if I miss a step in the setup,  for something that may or may not be better in the long run.  As to the model type and quality..  meh...  a moving plane is a moving plane, and thats good enough (for me) and there is no-way that I am going to spot the difference at heathrow at a different terminal between  the various tuypes of airbus.. but I am going to spot the tail logo..  so if thats right..  I'mma gonna be a happy bunny 🙂

Now I may be unique in this, but then again.. who knows 🙂

Also, if it's not a one-click install in a wrapper..  does that mean that X-Box users will never be able to use it?   seems like cutting a huge potential market out 🙂

As of today, Simple Traffic is the preferred tool for me if only for two things with AIG:  1) no GA traffic at this time, and 2) no lights on landing aircraft.  That said, I realize this is a beta release for AIG so perhaps when the "official" version is released with those items rectified, I'll be more than happy with it.

Until then, Simple Traffic will do me just fine in the interim.

I thought you were not interested in AIG 😉

Anyway, it's coming, the AIGTC interface already has a placeholder for it.

Thanks.  Still interested in AIG, but not an early adopter for things like this, so I ask lots of questions to come to a decision.  From a post 22h ago:  " Haven't decided yet and if I want to jump in on AIG or ST, but my inclination is to keep it simple so ST may be a good bridge until Asobo improves the picture themselves."

Do you really think their having difficulty?

Yes, because it was actually working once upon a time, and now its been broken with no fix for what feels like quite a while.

SU5 hosed the AI, no doubt.

All SU5 broke regarding AI was online traffic departing, It didn't break anything else. In fact it reenabled Parking Code support from FSX..

Well considering offline traffic can depart fine. It seems to be an issue with that specific system, not the AI itself.

Also why are we still discussing AIG in the simple traffic thread?

There are way too many threads on AI in the last few days, so I agree with you there.

Two similar solutions to the same problem, and a choice to make.
