GOOGLE MAP FOR MFS2020

Featured Replies

I wonder if a lot of simmers using the so called "google map replacement for mfs2020". I have seen a thousands of simmers have downloaded the MOD from flightsim.to but no body has mentioned about this weather it's good, bad or have put a screenshot on any forum. Is this legal to use the MOD because I have been trying to find out how to use the MOD or how to configure an ini or proxy file. If this is not illegal then some users of this MOD can share their experience with others

With Regards

There are 426 comments from users at the download site you mentioned, many of which seem to be experiencing problems. I would read those first if I were you.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X on ROG CROSSHAIR VIIl DARK HERO (AM4), Asus ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3080 V2 OC and 32 GB Vengeance Pro Ram 3600MHz. DELL Alienware AW3420DW 3440x1440 and DELL U2414H

I don't really see its use, considering it isn't about photogrammetry coverage (far superior in Google). I am okay with current satellite textures offered by Bing

Chock 1.1: "The only thing that whines louder than a jet engine is a flight simmer."

From what I've seen, it looks messy and not necessarily any better than the original Bing textures.

But I was personally hoping that Laminar Research would team up with Google to create a worthy competitor in the latest X-Plane. But that did not happen.

Of course won’t happen, who’s LR to Google to team up with? 😅

One of, if not the most accurate simulator out there when it comes to physics, as well as 26 years of experience in the business. Google teaming up with LR could be a goldmine for both companies.

Well if they see there is good potential in flight sim, pretty sure they won't team up with LR, they will either make their own sim or just buy a company to do that. And I think they don't really have interest in flight sim at all.

I have tried it. It is easy to use. Just install the app and leave the proxy empty if not neccessary for you.And test the connection with the app, itself.

Do not forget to follow the instruction of "Options>Data" and must make the "Rolling Cache OFF"  before starting. (if you use) Because it captures Google Data when it is "ON" as llke new area and you need to delete the rolling cache if you want Bing back.

These were the things I faced and learned with the mod. Rest is easy. Hope this helps.

Oh I wouldn’t say at all, since they have a flight sim built into google earth lol.

Well, I suppose if the MSFS team had chosen Google Earth imagery, the same crowd asking for it now, would cry for having Bing imagery instead.😇

And why do I think that the same trying to mod their sim to the extreme are then coming asking for help to cure their CTD ? 😇

My fifteen minutes of unkindness 😈.

I have never considered this MOD because, as you say, it looked messy to install.  The many bad comments at the download site also kept me away.

Currently though we cannot be more wrong.  A video showing the install was in my YouTube feed.  Super easy to install and run - my jaw hit the ground when I first saw the results!  The details in the textures are amazing and the colours are so much more life like!

The only places you will not see a difference is in places like New York where the Bing textures are hi res.  However, everywhere else it is stunning!

Nothing is changed in MSFS as this is an external application.

Just played around with it for an hour and from what I've seen so far, it's quite good. The colours are excellent and you get this incredible detail and sharpness when you're down at ground level, even loads fast. Gonna do some test flights, see how it fares stability and consistency wise.

I downloaded and tried it today and made a test flight in the area I live in. My first impression is that the roads now have correct color which is a big improvement. The green roads before was really glaringly incorrect

Alright, my quick verdict from a short flight, starting up at a ton of areas and generally messing around with it for a few hours

Pros:

- Setup is extremely easy. Install Python, press "Run" and you're off.

- Ground level detail is / can be incredible, seems to allow the highest detail zoom level, so you can make out details in rocks at ground level. Some of the coastlines are stunning. Bing is mostly mush at the very lowest level.

- Doesn't have green tint roads, makes quite a difference in some areas

- Seems to load fast, so it's very usable for every day flights if you prefer that.

Cons:

- While Google Maps certainly has a lot of areas much better than Bing, it also falls way short in others. Bing, at its worst, tend to just get a bit mushy and drab to look at but remains consistent for the most part, Google Maps swings wildly from incredible real-life colours to some radioactive patches of green, with quite a few very visible separation lines. Was very noticeable at Auckland airport, with a big line down the middle of the airport and the surrounding area looking like Teletubbie land.

- It certainly has its jank, not being a native implementation I assume. With small squares loading and unloading as you move the camera across an area sometimes, very visible and aggressive LOD switching at times, you'll even get the occasional "Google Maps" watermark looking down.

- Maybe I'm just paranoid but a program running on my PC, that modifies the Windows hosts file, requiring you to run a .bat file as administrator, from some random guy... Not something I'd include in my daily routine of flying. Though I'm not coder, seems to be an open project, so people can dig in and make sure it's safe?

It's a fun little project, very cool showcase that it's possible. Think I'll stick with Bing though 🙂
