Why is MSFS2020 having problems with Live Weather

Featured Replies

Could someone explain why there are so many problems with live weather. Last week it was trying to knock my pretty FBW A320 out of the sky. After a couple of days it seemed to start working ok. Tonite it tried to knock me out again. It's taking the ISA to 233 degrees celsius, which then takes the engines to idle, blah, blah, blah. Those affected know what I'm speaking of. I'm not in any shape, fashion, or form, a programmer. So is having live weather working properly some sort of programmers nightmare? Is the technology just not there right now to provide consistant live weather in game? Just askin'

Are you really interested in an answer or just venting?

I just ask as all this is obvisiously duscussed many, many times here ...

Btw. I'm very satisfied with weather in MSFS with SU7 hotfix since a while. Always very accurate.

Absolutely interested in an answer. I know there has been much discussion. And no, not venting. I promise. I just can't find anything from Microsoft stating what the issue is.

Well good, because that's simply not allowed at Avsim. 😉

Short answer: opt in the beta hotfix which is much better than the current sim update.

How:

  • If you have the MS Store version, download XBox Insider Hub app from the MS Store and opt in from there.
  • If you have the Steam version, right click on the game in the library, properties, beta, select the beta.

I've seen https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/live-weather-report/481407 before. Is it the "smooth transition" issue causing this to happen.

Causing temperature spikes referenced in your first post? No, they would be separate issues.

Going back to your original post, I think you are looking for answers that only the development team could possibly provide (but I don't think they will go into much depth about cause and solution). But I would say that it will be a programmer's nightmare, yes; all bugs usually are.

I think I've been lucky with live weather, maybe because it's I generally only fly low & slow but whenever I've set out to Live it's worked very well most of the time.

There are occasions it drops out and suddenly turns on mid flight, they're certainly having some issues with it though so all we can do is hope they get a grip on things.

Oh, the bug is now well known. It is the insane MS  policy which forces out releases which are not prime time ready. Great product, dreadful management.

You read the so-called « GOTY » release notes below. No need to scratch one’s head to see that almost everything in them was a potential weather wrecker if a careful testing was not done. But hey! the kids really wanted this Porter, Super Hornet etc  really bad. Of course the kids were not in such hurry but Neumann was to do his marketing dance.

Improved METAR ingestion into live weather

You can now consult real airport METARs during flight from the Weather panel (only when Live Weather is active)

Updated .WPR file versioning for weather preset edition. Now handles both coverage and density for cloud layers (Formerly density became coverage). Backward compatibility has been handled

It is now possible to put clouds below sea level (-400m) for regions such the Dead Sea

Fixed AGL / MSL UI display in weather panel

Setting wind with weather panel is more coherent with in-game wind near ground

Fixed unit conversions in weather panel

Minor UI improvements in weather panel

@Dominique_K, I couldn't have put it in a better way.

It's pretty much the result of too many tasks being run at the same time by ASOBO, who AFAIK had never dealt with the kind of data that makes up a flight simulator.

They did their best so far, but they surely must need time and not be constantly rushed by the MS SU / WU rate.

MS is playing "The Hen that laid Golden Eggs" with ASOBO !...

I believe it has little to do with the beta hotfix.  I am also now experiencing accurate live weather and I have not joined the HF beta.  Remaining issue weather-wise for me is the overdone haze. mostly when reported skies are clear and 10 miles visibility.  Yesterday MSFS again presented me with less than one mile visibility upon landing at KDAL.

Yes agreed, the beta is much better than SU7 base. Live weather is WIP at the moment - my main gripe and observation is OVC conditions are not yet properly implemented. I have had numerous reports of OVC METARs where I have never seen actual OVC conditions - more like broken cumulus clouds.

I think the lack of any stratus clouds in the sim is affecting this as OVC often as not is made up of a layer of stratus, alto-stratus or cirro-stratus. Look forward to this being implemented.

Otherwise it's looking really nice now - winds and temps aloft? OK  - well sort of  - not completely accurate though.

You're right, they have done many of the changes server-side. Overdone haze is sorted in the current beta build, I believe, so that is a core code change that will come in the patch.
