You know this is going to probably trigger this thread to get shutdown?  Anyway here some (not all):

  • Multi-view/Multi-monitor support (not NVsurround or equvilant) which is important for a 360 degree experience and to operate GNS/GTN/FMC on separate displays.
  • Multi-channel support with genlock - this is where you can have multiple computers operating displays that are frame sync'd with genlock device (master server with client servers) which means the ability to run many displays at 60Hz/60 FPS
  • PDK with lower level access to Simulator features (Prepar3d Development Kit)
  • SimDirector (build scenarios)
  • CIGI (Common Image Generator Interface) that allows on to run their own graphics rendering engine while still using the P3D underlying platform for aircraft simulation
  • DIS (Distributed Interactive Simulation) which is an IEEE standard from communication exchange for networking multi-user environments to communicate state information of objects/events primarily used in scenario management

Can't we probably expect much of that stuff to be implemented in the future? They said they want to support cockpit builders which would require most of the above, I'd guess?

I doubt Microsoft's long term plan is to rely on X-Box players.  For example, hiring Working Title is really not needed for X-Box players.  Working Title was always to placate the "hardcore simmer" market.  In addition, Jorg said he hired a developer to work on the scenery gateway system.  Again, the scenery gateway system is to make the taxiways and runways at airports more accurate.  In other words, the scenery gateway developer hiring was also to placate the "hardcore simmer" market.

The overwhelming majority of X-Box players probably don't care how accurate the G-1000 is.  The overwhelming majority of the X-Box players probably don't care about how accurate taxiways and runways are.

Microsoft is not stupid.  They are in this for the long run.  And the long run has always been the "hardcore simmer" market.  I even suspect Microsoft may make a play at the commercial market occupied by P3D.

If you are leading the business strategy at MSFS and you think X-Box is your target market, then you would be a fool to waste money on hiring Working Title and hiring the scenery gateway developer.

They dropped FSX because it was such a money maker???

For starters, they never had a marketplace for FSX, There really wasn’t much future revenue from FSX. Maybe they wouldn’t have dropped FSX if they knew they could get a cut from every 3rd party content sold in the marketplace.

Wow all that and it still looks like a cartoon by comparison, fascinating.  😶

Exactly, P3d  it is like flying over scenery that was run over by a bulldozer.

Folks are beginning to realize how important an authentic visual replication of the earth and its systems is.

Lacking that is why I left simming years ago and would be unacceptable to the new recruits.

There are pros and cons to being locked into hardware limits for 6 years.  On one hand is less expensive, on the other hand you don't get to see the advancement in graphics technology nor CPU technology over that 6 year period and as such games will be "made to work" within that 6 year technology limit.

Cheers, Rob.

Very good points. The way weather simulation in MSFS got dumbed down to a bare acceptable minimum seems to support them..

Suddenly the future looks much brighter for XP12, addressing the more demanding part of the flight simulator user base.

Personally I couldn’t imagine trying to fly a complex aircraft like what PMDG makes with an Xbox controller.  But if other people are willing to do that and it makes my hobby more financially viable I’m glad those people exist.

Not sure what that means but it sounds very important! 😉

It means the entire visual rendering engine can be substituted (cartoons and all) for a different one.  There are company's that have done this and/or are doing this,

Like these I believe:

XBOX Series X users will be low at the moment you cannot buy one in the UK. And have not been in stock for some time in Europe. You can buy an overpriced 3090 GPU but not an XBOX Series X.

Is anything (product/game) using this technology right now? I don't follow the gaming world at all but if anything out there has this sort of visual impact currently I'll have to take a look.

Stunning stuff.

My understanding of an early interview with Jorge is that Microsoft also wants to get MSFS out on PS5 (for obvious reasons).

Do you have a source? I am pretty sure this will never happen, MSFS in-line with the other Xbox studios games are Windows/Xbox only exclusive.

These are professional rendering engines meant to be used as image generators for simulators, like Prepar3D or X-Plane. There are many other similar products on the market today as well.

An X Box costs around £500, a top of the range gaming pc £3000 to £4000.0, an RTX 3090 is currently selling at over £2000+ in the UK, the future of MSFS my well be with the X Box.
