Terrain LOD is definitely a FPS killer and not even this CPU can handle it. I did some flights with LOD at 500:

UCFL-ZWWW: very good performance all the way to touch down.

Then I did two flights into Russian territory and the performance was really bad:

- Flying into Irkutsk (UIII): for some unknown reasons the performance was hit hard. Struggling to keep 30 fps, landed with 20-25 fps. Playable, still.

- Then I flew to Yakutsk (UEEE): again, struggling to keep 30 fps, even in cruise. Low CPU and GPU utilisation.

- Salt Lake City to LAX: very good performance throughout the flight. Landed in the middle 20 fps.

Sim settings: 4k windowed mode; no anti-aliasing; object LOD at its lowest; terrain LOD at 500; medium screen refresh rate quality; Fenix A320; default scenery; no traffic, except road vehicles.

I'm a one trick pony, if TH posts it, then I believe it.

GPU's are not this thread's focus but in the last few hours a new post:

Nvidia Reportedly Readies 800W RTX 4090 Ti With 18,176 Cores, 48GB GDDR6X

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-reportedly-readies-800w-rtx-4090-ti-graphics-card

(the 4090 non Ti is only 450 watts TBP)

So a bigger power supply may be in some of our futures.

Any VR useres (specifically the G2), what are you guys seeing for temps? Mine is peaking around 87-89 which seems hot? I’m on a 240mm AIO for cooling.

Doing some googling, people seem to say anything up to 90 is fine, and even then the cpu will do it’s best to maintain turbo speed and not throttle.

800W for a graphics card? Holy "word not allowed"! Heck even the RTX4080 would use 400W according to the TH link.

Seems that I will need to upgrade my 750W PSU when I refresh my PC... (planning on doing that next year with a next-gen Ryzen and RTX4xxx GPU).

It seems it already starts throttling when temperatures hit 90 degrees Celsius, and it'll keep throttling so they don't go over 90 degrees.

Here the CPU with default settings (voltage around 1.27) reaches around 70-75 degrees Celsius during stress testing with a NH-U12S air cooler. Ambient temperature between 15-26 degrees.

Today I upgraded my CPU to the x3D from the regular 5800x (with an OC). I also swaped out my 4x16GB 3200 RAM sticks for 2x16 3600 (C16) RAM. Kept the 3090 as is.

Significant improvement!

Mostly 4K Ultra settings and LOD 400 had me flying the Caravan around Vancouver at 68-72 FPS. This is up from around 58-60FPS with the old CPU. And I went from being main thread limited to fully exploiting my 3090. Same temps (around 65c on AIO).

Kudos to Asobo as well since last time I flew this back in early 2021, 40FPS was the best I could do on LOD 400. (Ps. Am I remembering correctly that 400 required hacking the config file before - and now it’s in the options menu?)

This has exceeded my expectations. I suspect with DLSS I’ll be able to layer on some mods and still do VFR at LOD 400 at 60FPS which is the holy grail for me. I’ll probably change LOD to 200 for A320 flights.

Anyone on the fence… the gains are real!

This CPU seems to get way hotter during actual gameplay. Stress testing with CPU-Z temperatures didn't go past 70 degrees Celsius. During a P3D session with CPU hitting 100% usage temperatures hit 90 degrees! Tested using a watercooler H60.

Mine runs the same temp as my OC’d 5800x. But MSFS never loads the CPU more than about 25% as it is not well threaded.

Ok since I also have 5800x I may consider the upgrade. However there was a rumor that the next gen AMD 7000 series chips would support AM4 socket.

Heat is a bit of a problem with 5800x and the x3d doesn't improve on it much? Maybe the 7000 series will have lower temps and support AM4. Well here's hoping.

At this point in time and so close to the release of the 7000 series that has already shown 3D cache variants like this one for gaming, it does not make any sense at all to buy a 5800X3D unless you find one for an irresistible price and you have an ageing AM4 platform that you can revive. If you are buying new m/b and everything like me (coming from a 7700K) it is worth waiting for a couple of months to see what the new stuff will be like and the overall performance for cost ratio.

I was tempted to pull the trigger on a 5800X3D that I found for a really low price on offer but I resisted and now I think I will wait regardless.

That’s impossible. The socket types are different. AM4 is PGA and the 7000 series will be LGA.

Agreed… if you are considering a completely new build, then waiting for 7000 is the prudent thing to do. Although, even then, you may determine that an AM4 platform with the 5800x3D offers good bang-for-buck solution for MSFS.

If you want to get as much life out of your AM4 platform as possible then the 5800x3D is the way to go. I generally upgrade GPUs every generation and CPU/Mobo every other generation for gaming, but MSFS has very different priorities on hardware and has caused a change of strategy for me. This is the first time I’ve updated my CPU on the same generation as the gains are more than I would typically expect from an entirely new platform upgrade.

The ideal CPU for MSFS doesn’t exist. It would be a dual core, 8GHz core, 10GHz boost clock, with 1GB Level 3 Cache 😛

7000 Series chips will not support Socket AM4 .. The new chipsets with the new sockets in the new LGA (land grid array socket)  specs are already in production and quite possibly shipping for distribution.

The only reason i am holding out is to see sim performance post SU10 of the 5800X3D vs my present chip (5900X) vs the all new chip (7800X/7900X) .. evaluate the cost and see where to go.

This is a good point. Post-SU10 the sim will change a lot in the way it is using cpu and gpu resources so it is worth testing with SU10 and deciding the platform you need. It could be that suddenly the 13th gen Intels work better all of a sudden.

Saying that, we know that with DLSS nvidia is the way to go for MSFS no matter what.
