Fenix and performance

Featured Replies

It runs pretty smooth at my system, locked at 30fps. It wasn't like that from the start though. I've done a fair bit of tweaking on various settings - in the sim, NCP, Windows BIOS. But I'm now at the stage where it performs well in most situations. And I think the Fenix update also has helped performance.

I know that words are pretty empty when talking about things like performance, as it is quite subjective what one considers great performance. It's like in the turbulence thread, when different users have wildly different opinions on the same phenomenon. I'm no YouTuber but if I manage I'll post a video here.

So the update helped?

Yes. Performance is significantly better after the update. It also fixed some issues with saving aircraft configurations in the EFB so that they will load properly on subsequent flights.

Is the integrated GPU an actual separate chip or is it just the CPU virtually mimicking one? If is the latter why would there be any advantage in enabling it? I seem to see a difference but it's small and could well be placebo?

It's a separate circuit within the CPU. My only concern was if it would cause additional heat when operating,  but so far that doesn't seem to be an issue on my system. Shifting from CPU to IGU has cooled things a bit.

I did some monitoring of processor utilization last night and for my settings (locked at 30), using the IGU kept my FPS and smoothness up a bit during high demand scenarios, but otherwise, it's impact was negligible. YMMV. You'd notice it more if you're running at a high FPS limit so you have less processing headroom.

Yes that is true. I used to really  believe that locked 30 fps is “smooth” in msfs. But I occasionally run x-plane 11 again (of course the graphics are no where near msfs) with the new challenger 650 and can manage quite easily 50-60 fps without any stuttering  I realise what real “smoothness” is now to me .. you can really feel the difference.

There is no reason to adopt this "amazing performance innovation", the other study level airplanes don't need it. It sounds to me like a palliative, and not all the CPUs have an iGPU.

Missing the PMDG DC6 in MSFS 2024 (she's here, but...).

You don't need an iGPU, just putting it on the normal GPU gives me 5 FPS more (because MSFS is CPU limited most of the time).

Also I doubt that no other study level airplane needs performance increase on any system...

I *think* this is only possible because of the external app of the Fenix. I'm quite sure the 737 needs to rely on MSFS how to render the displays, but I could be wrong.
Anyway when you do this you limit yourself to the PC only, which apparently PMDG is trying to avoid at all costs.

That's a generalization that I know does not hold from system to system or with different setting choices. My system is GPU bound most of the time in MSFS.

They know the market is huge within MSFS and Xbox.......give me the money........🙂

Yeah I was generalizing. Interestingly I also have a 1080ti (and a Ryzen 5600x) and have never ever been GPU limited in MSFS. It's a great card, a classic that still holds its own these days.

Yes I do, my Ryzen 5800x doesn't have an iGPU, as a potential Fenix customer I want to know if this A320 will adequately run on my system.
