Fenix and performance

Have you tried „verify setup“ in the AIG manager? Sounds like a corrupt model / livery.

It didn't work. BUT, during one of the CTDs, I managed to get an error message, something about a breakpoint issue, and an error code 0x80000003. I could trace this to a virtual memory issue. When I built my computer I set the pagefile fixed at 6144 MB, twice what the late NickN (may he rest in peace) suggested in his Bible. Looks like 6 GB was enough for P3D v4/v5, but too little for MSFS (where I can spend up to 12 GB RAM). AIG TC + Fenix were just the straws that broke the camel's back.

As soon as I set the pagefile to System Managed, I no longer see any CTD's. Luckily, the pagefile sits on a M2 SSD; speed is not a problem. Now I need to try the Fenix bus with 100% AIG, no static traffic (LVFR) and bad WX at default KMIA (my favorite test location).

I'm not flouting this as some amazing performance fix, but I noticed that there is a 8k texture file for the galley, just behind the cockpit.  I resized this to 4k and on my modest 1080Ti system, saw quite a noticeable reduction in panning stutters in the cockpit (I use TrackIR so these tend to be more noticeable as my panning is fast and dynamic).

The odd thing is, when I select to turn the cabin off, I see very little performance difference.  Yet when I reduced this 8k texture file, the difference was really noticeable, so I'm wondering if the galley is rendered even when the cabin is off.

Anyway, all subjective.   This would only be relevent for people with modest GPU cards but it definitely smoothed things for me.

I had mentioned the texture sizes in a much earlier post. I was wondering if some of the 8K textures could be causing some performance issues. I know this from experience with some of the 3rd party liveries I downloaded for the FBW A32NX, For instance in one Air Canada livery there was a 5K coffee cup. I used paintdotnet to resize all my FBW liveries to 2K and it did help with performance while having little impact on the visuals. I had also done this with my FF A320 in X-Plane which was really hard on FPS.

I am going to buy the Fenix today, I am curious to see how my system can handle it before I start my upgrades 😀

Taxiing in at DFW after a terrifying flight from PHX.

Full house and takeoff was near max gross weight

The aircraft was not happy and fought me the entire trip because I did a poor job of programing the box and my lack of experience with it.

I finally got my act together on descent and the arrival phase and she executed a perfect CATIII approach.

This is why I sim.

Is anyone finding much of a performance difference between the 4k and 8k liveries?

Well I just purchased this beautiful bird and installed it.

I loaded into the sim at EGPK very quickly calibrated my Bravo Throttle (Still have to figure the reverse thrust), pushed back and started her up and taxied out to runway 12. The performance seems identical to the FBW A320 if not better. I am getting very nice performance, solid 30fps and very smooth (I do lock this in NVCP and have VSYNC turned on also in NVCP) I even switched the panel state to quality and my i5-9600K still has plenty of headroom using the CPU rendering option. I have yet to enable the onboard GPU. I have been cruising at FL360 heading due south for about an hour and my CPU is sitting around 70% with my 1080TI around 90% (I am running full 4K on a 43 inch TV as well) which is why I will be putting an Asus TUF 3080 12GB in very soon.

Now I just need to try a full flight with Simbrief to get used to the different procedures in the Fenix. I am also excited about using my iPad Pro as the EFB. Hopefully I can convince my dear wife to let me have some sim time this evening lol 😀

So far I am super happy with my purchase.

1). The EFB must be running, as it controls authentication

No it doesn,t, see this post from Aamir:

Still have to figure the reverse thrust

I've just mapped "toggle throttle reverse thrust" to a button on my stick. Hit that button to go into reverse thrust mode, use the throttle to increase beyond idle reverse, bring it back again to idle reverse, then hit "toggle throttle reverse thrust" once more to come back to idle thrust.

Another tip: increase the nullzone in the MCDU-config-controls config menu. I've got mine set to 4% which makes it so much easier to hit CL or FLX/MCT thrust on takeoff.

Awesome I will give this a try,

Thank you. I actually like that you can vary the amount of reverse thrust.

Are you talking about the STAR? If so, the SIDs and STARs are not imported but have to be entered manually.

No, just single wayponts, last one is always missing. I just put it in manually.

I probably used a poorly chosen term with 'authentication', but I didn't say the EFB ran the DRM.   The point I was making was that it's not possible to run the A320 without EFB running.    I meant that the EFB is the interface between the aircraft and the Fenix App; considering the externally ran systems logic.

I was referring to those having issues with the EFB, and the question around "whether you can use the aircraft without the EFB".

Yesterday I closed the App while in the aircraft - the physical EFB model disappeared from the cockpit and there were no systems.

My point was nothing at all to do with DRM, in terms of licence authentication, but again, my bad for using the term authentication;  I meant systems interface validation.

Thank you for the info, now I have another reason NOT to buy this airplane: If I pay a product, I demand not to be "supervised" all the time through the EFB. This is a paranoid approach, the same FSLab has on his A320. Fortunately other devs are more open minded.

The EFB is not 'supervising' anything, other than the correct operation of the systems.

I used the term authentication in my comment, which was poorly chosen - I didn't mean anything to do with DRM of licencing;  I simply meant:   No EFB = No systems.   This can be demonstrated by closing the app, which kills the EFB and leaves the aicraft dead, systems-wise.  The MCDU becomes unresponsive and even the overhead switches become non-functional.

Hence the point that the EFB acts as the brain of the aircraft systems interface.

Nothing to do with DRM, licence authentication or being 'supervised'.

Can you give an example of a simbrief route where this happens and what the missing waypoint was?

So…very quick test but I resized the 8k galley texture to 4k and performance (incl a massive reduction in cpu use) seems better.
