Is it a good idea to get RTX3090 for MSFS now?

Featured Replies

Hello folks,

As you can see from my signature, I own RTX2080 with 8gb which is alright at the moment. Now some local dealer has an offer for RTX3090 around 1000€ and I am considering to get it, especially after SU10 and DX12, I assume the larger the VRAM, the better MSFS gets? What do you guys think, shall I get RTX3090 or wait for RTX4080 ?

thanks

Not really... depends on your monitor resolution and MSFS settings.

I would say, stay with your 2080..

If you get a 4080 I hope you plan to upgrade the rest of your system to support it. Looking at your system specs you wouldn't get a benefit of a 4080.

I'm in the same boat as well, thinking to upgrade to RTX 3090 from a GTX 1080Ti. With a i7-8770k there is not much benefit in waiting for the next generation cards unless I want to upgrade the CPU and motherboard as well, which will get too expensive.

If you have the money to spare why not, but a more logical option might be to wait until you decide to replace the entire machine in case you wish to wait for the 4080. With ethereum mining no longer being a profitable and soaring energy prices in Europe, GPU mining will hopefully die so that prices for us who use it for games or MSFS will decrease.

I have a system similar to the OP. What system specs would you suggest upgrading, to take full advantage of a 4080.

The last I saw was you needed four 8-pin connectors at 150 watts per connector just to power the thing.  600 watts just to power the card at design specs!  Check out this discussion:

Agree.  I’ve got a 2070. With SU10, DX12 and the latest nvidia studio drivers the results have been startling 🤩.

I’d have a good explore of the new options and the new headroom these have given and then consider where you want to go with your systems.

As a general rule of thumb; when upgrading nvidia cards, go two steps up to get best bang for your money:

1080 - 3080 or 2080 - 4080.

I am indeed happy with how my system handles MSFS on my 4k monitor. However, I fly almost exclusively in VR using a HP G2., and while the experience is very satisfying, I am unable to maximize most of my VR settings.

From most of the responses I see here, I wonder if I should be thinking of investing in 3090? would this upgrade be possible, and worth it? considering that prices of current models seem to be falling.

If I were in your shoes, I'd personally wait until the 4080 is actually tested by flight simmers to see what the overall benefits would be. If this DLSS 3.0 nonsense is as good as nvidia claims it will be by shifting work from the CPU onto the GPU, you may benefit more from a 40 series card. But the new cards are too close to release to buy anything right now. Just wait it out a few weeks.

It all comes down to your own budget. I just picked up a 3090 Ti for ~1000 USD brand new. It’s definitely helped the sim, but equally, if I waited for the 4080 it would be faster.

For me the $1000 cost was ok since I’m going to buy a whole new PC late next year once all the PCIe 5 stuff shakes out and the early adopters get through the platform bugs that always happens with first gen equipment. I’m confident that the 3090 Ti and my 5600x will take me through another year and then I’ll see what’s a good GPU to get along with a new CPU, RAM, etc.

Last year I upgraded my CPU to the i9 9900K which is the highest CPU my MB can support.

48 GB memory.

I'm running an RTX-2070 and was figuring to do the GPU next.

Wondering also what I can expect to gain by going to a RTX3080 or 3090 depending on how low prices drop.

Any opinions?

Wait for AMD, they are just about to do to Nvidia what have done to Intel! They will be at the very least same performance (excluding RT) but very much more reasonable price tag.

I am running a 3090 with an i7-12700K,

I can hit a solid 50 fps in complex aircraft like the PMDG or Fenix with high to Ultra settings in 4K. I have dabbled a little with DLSS but don’t really like the way glass panels refresh so I’m sticking with TLA for now. One thing I’ve noticed with SU10 is that the changes they made to clouds can still push the 3090 hard. I chose to run the clouds on high rather than ultra as I see very little different and ultra will definitely nail the GPU in heavy situations.

The sim looks fantastic and if I run everything maxed out there’s very little different visually from what I have now and there will be no headroom for the GPU.

Overall I’m very happy with my setup, to be honest if you can hit a solid 50fps the sim is very fluid and there’s very little difference between this and 60 fps. I’m still interested to see how the 40 series cards perform but I’m really not that keen on needing a power supply rated in kilowatts!

I have 12Gb of VRAM on the 3080Ti.  In the PMDG 738, at KJFK, DevMode showed ~6.7Gb of VRAM in use of 11.2Gb total available and that was in DirectX-12 mode.  3440x1440, Ultra, 16x/8x.  I have seen much more in use (just under 11.2Gb) and certainly people w/ 3090 see way more than 12Gb in use.  Does that translate to a better experience?  Not sure because I already have perfectly smooth video.  I do get a rare stutter but most often that is related to ATC.  Also, I notice if I set render scaling too high I will get brief 'shimmy' or what have you, kind of a brief period of shaking slightly, then smooth video resumes.  It's been more this way for me for several months so is not really related to SU10 in fact SU10 may have improved it slightly.  But as I say ATC is the greatest cause of mild stutters for me.

It does seem impressive from what I’ve seen/read. If I had an RTX2000-series or older card now, I’d probably wait and see how the RTX4000 launch pans out.

Even the current DLSS in MSFS can be very powerful. I was severely GPU-limited the other day (yeah that’s possible with a 3090 and DX12) and by going from TAA to DLSS the fps increased from 32 to 47. That’s almost a 50% increase.

Absolutely. I’ve been running higher than default settings and my 3090 have been running at almost 100% many times. It’s not rare that I see VRAM usage exceed 20GB. Heavy cloud layers, high terrain LOD and a custom mesh will try to squeeze every ounce of performance out of the GPU.

It could give you more headroom to crank up the settings and handle heavy weather at the same time. It depends how important visuals are. I’m very happy I’ve got a 3090 with 24GBs of VRAM. But I’m going to hold on to it until the RTX6000-series.
