At first I wondered how the pilot of the P63 KingCobra failed to see the B17 Flying Fortress, but then I saw another video from a different angle. I guess the B17 was hidden from view by the smaller plane's wing as it approached the B17 during a turn? Whatever the case, it is very sad

My late father and I have been "Colonels" in the "Ghost Squadron" of the CAF for many decades. When we joined, the squadron was based at the Harlingen Airport. It was later moved to Beeville, TX.

This was a horrible tragedy. I cannot imagine any of the crew surviving that accident. The impact appears to have separated the entire wing box, wings and engines from the main fuselage and cockpit. The tail section also appears to have sheared off and fell seperately.

Seems not to be an infrequent occurrence for this group.

They were here in Greenville South Carolina two weekends ago. Sick feeling.

This is the most horrifying air crash I've ever seen. The clarity of the footage and multiple angles is absolutely harrowing and seeing how the B-17 was just absolutely ripped apart. 😬

If it had just been the P63's wing that clipped the B-17, they might actually have had a chance.

Unfortunately, it must be considered that in events of this type, flying planes with considerably different speeds is a big risk. Given that the images can certainly deceive but from the videos the  P-63  flies at a significantly higher speed than the B17 and here it is to be understood if the pilot of the P-63 flies higher than the B17 and does not see it by making a left turn which however leads it to collide with the B17 or that the pilot sees it and tries a desperate left turn, but its speed is too high to avoid a collision with the B17.

I thought these activities would have been coordinated from the control tower in order to avoid such disasters.

This is an absolutely horrible tragedy.  My thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of those who perished.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

I'm from a tiny island, and about 6 years ago went to the US to do my flight training. Whilst I was taxing out of my home airport, I heard ATC giving a plane clearance to land, and heard the callsign Flying Fortress. I looked at my instructor with my mouth open; I'm not into military aviation, but I remember as a kid, hearing that plane's name in the Fighter Ace Game that came with FS2002 and thinking it was some God like plane, after hearing things about it while growing up, I couldn't believe one was actually flying. I turned around and saw this huge thing coming into land right in-front of me. It was the first military/warplane I ever saw in my life and I was truly stunned seeing a military aircraft, far-less this. It was this bird, the CAF Texas Raiders. Turns out they were staying at the airport for a couple days, and you could have gone checked it out. They day after I did, and the captain (Ret Captain of a major US airline) saw me looking at the plane with my pilots license on a lanyard over my neck, took a look at it, and saw where I was from, and was telling me he flew to my country hundreds of times and had a nice chat with him. I was truly shocked and saddened hearing about it this afternoon, and also hearing that this flight was the Captains retirement flight and it turned out like this. I don't know if its the same captain I met, but nonetheless condolences to the family and friends of the crew of a plane that etched a fantastic memory in my aviation career.

My impression is the person flying the Cobra suffered a G-lock when trying to tighten his turn to position himself 'inside' the B-17's path. No way he wouldn't have seen the B-17 as they were in a formation around the B-17. Very sad.

I think it might be the other way around.

I'm not sure the B17 would have been visible from the Cobra's cockpit while banked (and pulling) like that.... It looks like the B17 would have been been 'below' the Cobra's nose in the turn for at least the last few seconds until immediately before the collision.

Tragic and horiffic either way.
