That's probably it. If they were planning on an August release, they would probably have named it FS2025 so it wouldn't be outdated in 4 months. 10 months would be better. 🙂

They released MSFS2020 in August 2020... and wasn't bothered about the name being outdated 4 months later.

If they were worried about dates in the title they would probably do what they did with the jump from  w98/w2k to XP and take the year out the name.

Isn’t the official title simply « Microsoft Flight Simulator » and 2020/2024 just like an internal number (version)?

No, in naming the product that was released in August 2020, "Microsoft Flight Simulator", Microsoft kindly opened up the channel for endless confusion,
with FSX in particular, the difference in the name being no more than the "X" at the end of Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

For this reason and because users like to rename stuff, Microsoft Flight Simulator has attracted "MSFS 2020", "2020", "FS2020" and so on.
Presumably, in order to distinguish the Microsoft Flight Simulator that was released in 2020 from the Microsoft Flight Simulator that will be released in 2024, the marketing department had to think long and hard before coming up with this cunning method.
I expect that they are handsomely remunerated for this world-class expertise.

Because it wasn't. It was never named MSFS2020.

Correct, but as Farlis states below, it was simply called "Microsoft Flight Simulator" when it was released.

The community started calling it MSFS2020, and then MS & Asobo eventually embraced it.

Thus giving them the idea...  "Hey!  Why don't we change the numbers at the end and charge them again!"

No they did not. They never called it MSFS2020. They only started to do that after disclosing the development of MSFS2024

True.  I have never seen 2020 anywhere on any marketing.

MS2020/MSFS2020 Was a fan nickname, Microsoft/Asobo never called it that officially.

But as stated above, Jorg has started referring to it 2020 to differentiate it from 2024.

'24 is just another (big) Service Update.  It's enough changes that they decided to make a new version.

You could then say that about many of the previous versions.  FSX was an update of 2004 which was an update of 2002 which...
So I don't think that's correct.

They have said the new one will have a whole new engine and everything, so I think it's more of a new version than a big update.
