South For the Winter

Featured Replies

Words don't exist to describe how much I despise the winter.  So this year, I've decided to pick my(virtual)self up and (virtually) move to someplace warm for the season.  So I've decided to spend the next few months based out of the LA area instead of Eastern Canada, where I live and will actually be spending my winter.  I'll still be going all over the place but I'll end up in LA more than at home at CYOW.

So if you see me around, be sure to offer a wing wave.

🙂 I fly out of Bodö, Norway during the Northern hemisphere summer months, moving to Cordoba, Argentina in the depths of Northern winters. Spring and Autumn, alternating between southern California high desert and Morocco.

Currently in Fes, Morocco GMFF during GTN/autopilot training with the BlackSquare Bonanza preparing for Spring in SoCal and PilotEdge.

Being a pilot in flight sim is grand.

Nice!

I’m Wisconsin-based IRL and (even today) have had my fill of shoveling and chill in the real world, but I love flying in SoCal.  Excellent SoCal imagery, and many fun and short trips, Ontario to Burbank or John Wayne or Palm Springs or LAX or any number of similar combinations.

Since it hardly snows anymore at all here in Germany (thanks climate change), I actually like to fly in Scandinavia, Switzerland or Russia in winter. Just to see some snow, you know.

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

Based myself out of Denver for the foreseeable. It's a Winter wonderland right now. Some flights down to San Jose, Houston and Tampa lined up before heading down over the border into Central America.

It's what I love about this sim. I just spent an hour or so replaying my Mi-17 flight from the Grand Canyon to KLAS, pausing and exploring with the drone camera. Sat a couple of feet in front of a 55 inch HDR screen that completely fills the visual space in front of me (can't see the window in my cave when I'm sat there). Flight was in bright sky with high cloud. By the time I'd finished it had gotten dark outside but I never even noticed, and the visuals in MSFS are so good I swear I can feel the sunlight pouring out of my screen. Magic! (or radiation poisoning, but hopefully the former <grin>)

Ryzen 9 7900X, Corsair H150 AIO cooler, 64 Gb DDR5, Asus X670E Hero m/b, 3090ti, 13Tb NVMe, 8Tb SSD, 16Tb HD, 55" Philips 4k HDR monitor, EVGA 1600w ps, all in Corsair 7000D airflow case. Sims in use - 2020, 2024, XP-12 and -11, FSX/SE, P3Dv4.5 and v5.4. DCS and AFS2 installed but rarely used

Never mind the winter, I’m going back to the 1980’s and flying the Shorts 330 & 360 around the uk in VR.
They were much simpler. Positive times, I’m happy there.

This thread is ironic.  When I lived up north in MN I would do winter flights during this time of year down to the Caribbean and Florida especially in January.  This was right after shoveling snow and freezing my tail off.  Now that I live in Florida (got sick of the winters in the real world) I still do flights out of my new home base KISM to airports like KFCM for Longitude flights to places like the Carribean and Mexico.  I love flying out of a snow storm or cold weather conditions to warm vacation locations.  Then go outside to see the cold is not my reality anymore.  If you can move in the real world by all means move...🍺

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super OC 16GB - Pimax Crystal Light VR

Due to some Black Friday bargains I arranged a winter destination in South Africa (where I never travelled to - not even in Flightsim).

- Okavango Delta (now about 5 Euro)

- Victoria Falls Scenery Pack and Victoria Falls Airport (FVFA)

- Maun Airport Botswana (Freeware)

and as an addition to cruise around the Zenith CH701 STOL now for 2 Euros on MS Marketplace.

Maybe I reactivate my Concorde to get there (it's about 4.000 nm from cold Central Europe) or I do it by some Cessna Longitude jumps.

I'm the opposite.  I like to fly north in the winter and hope to see some snow.  I grew up in the northeast and somewhat miss seeing the snow

I have to admit it’s a great perk of my real world flying job , heading out of the uk with the windscreen wipers and anti-ice switched on then landing into the Caribbean and getting off in short sleeves.

Not so much fun coming home again though and having to scrape the ice off the car windscreen at the airport.

One of my favorite things about flight simming is being able to jump in my aircraft of choice and fly anywhere in the world that I fancy at that given time. As for this time of year, I LOVE winter (that's why I live in Colorado) and winter means ski season to me, so I am all about the snow. And I don't mind shoveling as I just put in my earbuds and treat it like a little gym workout. No biggie. 🙂

Ah a fellow YOW'er who's probably already sick of another Ottawa winter - ditto! That's exactly what I do when winter sets in. L.A. or, with the help of some good weather presets, out west or in Europe using a summer date. Mind you it would help if the Ottawa weather could make up its mind...fall - no summer - no wait, winter lol.

I hear you - I live in the UK and we rarely get snow these days.  As a child every year would see several feet of snow fall, several times a season.  Snow is now the exception in winter.  Last time I had to shovel snow was maybe 25 years ago.
