Jumped on the Frame Generation Bandwagon

Hey Peeps, I noticed the chatter regarding the "Lossless Scaling" app available on Steam.

Well.. I had a few leftover $$ in my Steam wallet and decided to give it a whirl.

So for the very magic price of $10.25 AU I have installed on my machine.

And it's *BLACK MAGIC* indeed !😁

If you've looked at my just uploaded Gold Coast City Scene vid, just think of it at a even smoother 60 fps.

The app is truly like having an upgraded GPU, I'd take a short vid to show it working however my screen recording software doesn't like it.

So it get it all working I did the following.

  1. Buy and install APP, make a manual shortcut to start it so I don't have to run Steam as well.
  2. All my testing is in v5.3 atm, will trial 4.5 later.
  3. In the P3D config under [DISPLAY] set SwapChainVSyncOnlyMainWindow=0 (not sure if needed but it's what I have in my P3D config).
  4. In P3D set the frame rate internally to 20 fps being sure to adjust P3D settings to achieve a nice and stable 20 fps. You could also set P3D to unlimited and use the NVidia control panel to set 20.
  5. Run P3D in a 60 Hz screen mode.
  6. Start Lossless Scaling.
    1. Create a P3D profile (there is a manual link but it's pretty straight forward).
    2. Set "Scaling Mode" to auto and full screen.
    3. Set "Scaling Type" to Off
    4. In "Frame Generation" set the following.
      • LSFG 2.1
      • Mode X3
      • Enable the App's Vertical Sync
      • Set Max Refresh rate
      • Enable Draw FPS
      • Set "Capture API " to DXGI

Then fly around a bit at 20 fps, hit the App's "Scale" Button and click back to the P3D screen for focus.

There will be a countdown and the magic then occurs - 60 fps and no maxing of GPU - truly *BLACK MAGIC* 😲

Enjoy the overall vsync smoothness.

Is it perfect ... nope there are FG glitches but I find they are a mostly acceptable trade off.

Also if your P3D is having trouble making the 20 FPS try setting FPS to 15 and use the X2 mode with the 1/2 vsync option for a frame generation rate of 30 with vsync.

Cheers

@Rogen, I’ve deleted your duplicated posts about Frame Generation. It might be a server issue or user impatience.

How did you manage to run it without having to start steam ?

Never mind, found it 😀

Could you share it with us how? I wouldn't mind not having to wait for Steam to log in and start up...

Thanks Ray, the issue was a NGINX Gateway error which typically has a meaning along the lines of an upstream server sending no or sending malformed responses to a NGINX server defined as a reverse proxy server (yep... I've been working in I.T. since 2003). Could be related to the AVSIM server outage that recently occured.

Thanks again for fixing my dup posts.

Wow, no artifacts when panning in Spot view? I never tried X3 in P3D, but I did so in FSX in my laptop. It was awesome, but the panning in spot view (using the A2A P-40) gave me some artifacts. I simply accepted them as the price to be paid for all that smoothness.

In my desktop, for v4, v5 and FSX, I set 30 FPS frame lock with RTSS (unlimited in sim) and then set X2 in LS. Beautiful and no artifacts...but you're tempting me to try X3.

I wouldn't say no artifacts, but the vsync smoothness is quite something to behold.

There's many ways FG can be configured in the App, ideally the higher the base fps locked rate the better the functionality will be, as there are more real frames meaning less time between frames when frames are generated.

The above said if you keep a low/moderate locked framerate (as in something P3D can easily handle on the target machine) there are more resources to throw towards higher GFX fidelity.

So smoothness and with higher settings at the cost of some artifacting, and if you don't like it just turn it off 🙂 It's not as though you spent upwards of $3000.00+ dollar-pounds for it.

Personally, this just isn't something I think I need, and I'm betting that many others don't either.  I'm always skeptical of these "get better performance with this software" schemes.  It might help if you have a lower end GPU, but even then you can't get something for nothing with computer hardware so there must be a trade-off by using this technique - using more GPU resources perhaps?.  Maybe I'm wrong and it is magic.

I set Nvidia control panel to use adaptive half refresh rate vsync, enable vsync in the sim settings, set unlimited frames, and I get a nice, smooth experience - in fact, the best experience I've ever had.  I am using P3Dv6 BTW, so maybe it's that as well.

Probably. But flight sims are usually CPU-limited and the GPU has some spare power available. That's why these FG mods/utilities appear to work for free.

Wow! Running P3DV4.5 very smooth at full high setting also without a dedicated GPU! Absolutely strabilliant! Anyone found a method to remove the double tooltips?

FYI... I just read up a little more on this and apparently VRR is not supported. In order to take advantage of this app, you need to set your monitor (which would typically have G-sync like my one does) to a fixed refresh rate for this to work as indicated in the top post.

I was EXTREMELY sceptical but it does exactly what it claims.  I have NO idea how, but it works beautifully.  I even tried it on P3D v3.4 and the frame rates are amazing - also on 4,5,and v6 with the same result.

Thumbs up and would recommend, expecially at such a low price. 5/5!
