Active Sky vs. Default

Featured Replies

Now that AS has been out a few months, I was just curious what people think is more realistic in terms of depicting realistic live weather, AS or default?  I feel like the clouds depicted in AS are a little flat and cloud tops in storms are not very high.  Maybe i don't have it set up correctly but I would have thought AS would have been a bit more realistic.  Thoughts?

if you fly in a custom time / date is necesary but if you only fly in real time it isn't

I don't have any weather packages installed and probably won't bother now with the release of MSFS 2024 on the horizon, however, i really hope the default/native weather options are better in the new sim.

I'm not sure if it's just my set up, but when I select any of the default weather options, other than 'clear skies', it's as if there's a strange filter that produces really strange and unrealistic lighting.  Cheers,

Calum

I have also uninstalled AS; well, I reinstalled the sim a few weeks ago and did not bother to reinstall AS.

As others have said above, if you want to fly at historical points in time it is a helpful addon and will meet that need well; but if you are flying in real time -- something I do 100 percent of the time -- then it does not seem so necessary. On some days I would find AS looks somewhat better than live weather; on other days I found the reverse; but on the whole I find live weather to be a good representation and given that I am in an airliner phase right now I do not like global depiction of weather all around me. No option is absolutely ideal, but I would not see the need to spend additional fund sand run another program unless you want historical weather or you are a weather person and absolutely require the full spectrum of cloud types to be represented.

MSFS 2024. Primary Planes: Black Square TBM850, Duke, Baron, Caravan; A2A Comanche; FSReborn Phenom; Fexix A321; PMDG 737-7, 777: Utilities: Active Sky (Passive Mode); BATC, FSLTL.

I'm using ASFS most of the time (except for group flights) and think it does add a bit vs default (more cloud variation, enhanced turbulence etc). However I think default live weather is quite good.

AS's problem is they're fully stuck w/ the basic rendering of clouds.

If only AS could provide the full spectrum of cloud types as they too are stuck with low resolution rendering that is currently built in.

Switch between Active to Passive mode for the latter part of the climb, cruise, early part of descent.

That way you get the visual benefit of Live Weather up high (but with all the benefits the AS gives, e.g. turbulence) and the full features of AS Active mode at lower altitudes where global depiction isn't as visually obvious.

More realistic it is absolutely. By a large margin.

They don't have full access. Let's see what 2024 brings.
