MSFS 2024 - GPU use high in all scenarios

Featured Replies

Hi all, sorry if this is already covered somewhere and has become buried.

I’ve got past the initial issues (was on holiday so had no choice but to wait). I’ve been muddling through setting up controllers etc, the sim suggested Ultra settings for my PC (recently new CPU due to an issue and a 3090 24gb gfx card).

The problem/concern I have is this - not just in the menus like I’ve read, but in all circumstances the sim is pushing towards 100% GPU use, causing fans to be at full tilt etc.  I’ve tried mirroring my FS2020 settings that work well for me (and of course at times the GPU is pushed there too but not all of the time) but the reduction in some settings away from ultra made no difference.

Are others seeing the same? I don’t want my PC to catch fire 😂

Ian.

It will have zero effect in my house, because there is no way that I will ever pay an extortionate amount of money for a graphics card.

Looking at my GPU core load in HWiNFO, even with a 90FPS cap and FG, it does seem to sit at around 99% so it does hit the GPU hard. But the GPU should be able to sit there all day long without any issues, unless you got problems with your cooling. My GPU usually sits at around 55 - 58c when flying.

My CPU cooling is fine. GPU (according to windows) was at 71 Celsius when it was maxing out. It’s louder than I’m used to so perhaps that’s my issue/worry.

You could tweak your fan curve a bit, trade some noise for slightly higher temps. However, outside of that you are good, nothing to worry about.

What's your rate capped to?

I didn't enable either VSync or Adaptive refresh in the game options and instead use RivaTuner to limit to 30 FPS.

It also works ok if I set it to 60 FPS, but I prefer 30...

I only use TAA fo AA.

Temps, both CPU and GPU look cool 🙂

Unless I want to go for it, I use AMD Chill to limit frames. Not sure what the nVidia equivalent is these days.

I actually just noticed, as a correction to my original post, with FG enabled it seems the load shoots up when the MSFS window is not in focus. So when I'm on the secondary monitor typing here, load shoots up to 98-99%. When I go back to the sim, load, temps and power draw settles down and it lands at 60% load.

Same here with 4090. As mentioned above i also have 99% of GPU usage even when i am not focus on MSFS2024 while using my 2nd monitor or any other application/web browser etc.

I already put  a frame limiter ( RTSS) to 72fps which worked really good with MSF2020 ( after their update with the option to not  running video in the background )

Looks like the problem is back on 2024

When you move focus from your second screen back to the main MSFS screen are you getting the same 'judder' or whatever to call it, as is the case when NV DLSS FG is enabled in 2020?  Just curious as that is one reason why I rarely use FG as I'm frequently going back and forth between screens, and I don't have 2024 installed yet to see for myself.

I know what you mean, it was a pretty bad in 2020 and I do think I disabled FG for that very reason at some point, because I often move back and forth between monitors during a flight. There's still a slight glitch at times but it can be a small element on screen that's moving which 'ghosts' for a second or creates a quick artifact, as opposed to the entire image 'juddering' like it did in 2020. So for me, at least, it's a big improvement and often I don't even notice.

Can you guys explain how this is a problem if you're running uncapped framerate? This is a good thing because it means the sim isn't CPU bound and is making maximum use of your GPU. In this scenario if you want to lower your GPU util, you have to cap your frames to something lower than your average maximum FPS. (issues with GPU util when window not in focus aside)

My frames are capped at 1/2 refresh rate (so 30) which is what I’ve done for years in sims. 2020 is smooth at that setting.

Should I go full refresh rate (60?)

I use a 4k TV for my display.
