What would make me adopt XP12 as my General Purpose sim?

Featured Replies

Well,

having ATC, default or external, preferably something like Beyond ATC which I am really enjoying, or even FSHUD, being able to interact with AI-injected traffic.

I am good with the combination AutoOrtho + SimHeaven WORLD, even with default Weather which I find better overall than MSFS's default weather, and the aircraft, of pretty much all types feel so much more plausible, realistic that I could close my eyes to the superb depiction of the true World Scenery that MSFS offers.

There's also another factor to take into consideration - integration with Navigraph and the price factor - X-Plane's market having, for now, a way inferior number of potential buyers inflates the price of addons, but then again if we consider the average quality of either payware or freeware aircraft addons, I find it superior to the equivalent type of offers available for MSFS.

I alternate between the two sims, and Condorsoaring 3 for the simulation of soaring flight like in no other flightsim, and "uninstalling" either of the 3 is out of question for now, but **honestly** I would rather prefer to be able to drop MSFS one day 🙂

  • It's well known that, in relative terms, X-Plane development is more directed towards the flight simulation / engineering tool aspect, while MSFS development is more directed towards the gaming aspect

  • I doubt anyone is offended. You can call it a ham sandwich if you want to.  If I, as a dev who has made a living out of it for the past 16 years, chooses to treat it as a “simulator” by making add ons

  • There's a channel called #xp-feature-request where you can either upvote requests that have already been posted or post your own if it hasn't already been suggested.

I, too, would like to see ATC interacting with AI injected traffic but in my case, I'm hoping it's Say Intentions that gets there (since they support XP where BeyondATC does not).

But what I'm really pining for is a G1000 NXi implementation on X-Plane that is equal to or better than the WT one in MSFS. Then I'd be an incredibly happy, happy X-Plane flier. I have high hopes that COWS is going to release their DA42 for XP with the custom G1000 "soon" to scratch this itch.

That and I'm anxious for Moza to release their promised support for FFB in XP.

Overall though, I still find myself flying in XP12 far more than I do in either flavour of MSFS but those items would be welcome updates.

Very good point @Malaromane, and one that escaped me, probably because I never fly GA in MSFS !

But Yes, the level of detail / usability provided by the various WT solutions for MSFS is Remarkable.

I can say with a very high degree of confidence that when you get it, your whole perception of flight sim will change.

Can we have this in writing?

Oh ... we have it in writing. 😃

I mean in writing and witnessed by a notary? 😅

Nothining. Already is. One sim is enough, dont have enough money to throw at 3 or for different ones. Like having 3 girlfriends,

No... he'll just jump over to the 2024 threads. 🙂

I am really enjoying Xp12 ... for the first time since I purchased it at release... and more than I ever enjoyed either of the MSFS versions so far... But FS 2024 is still a great sim for Scenery browsing...

my 2 cents

Beyond ATC traffic injection is impressive and immersive when ATC injects and interact with them.  However the base ATC is very similar to  Pilot2ATC where it just blindly follows a given path/alt from simbrief.  Maybe all this will change soon when BATC will add LLM and VFR capabilities.  X-Plane ATC is far more dynamic, adoptable and it can interact with the built in AI traffic.  The hope is Jim (creator of Traffic Global) will sell/integrate TG (much superior product) as part of base X-Plane. I am not sure if there are licensing issue because who owns the schedule database and those AI liveries?

Simheaven can improve the representation of the building, roads, trees particularly when MS Bing Footprint layer is enabled.  However the performance hit is very bad. The  art objects used in Simheaven are low quality.  I don't think current X-Plane engine is capable of representing 1:1 OSM data from footprint.   This might change in future XP13 if/when they switch to more modern engine, vector graphics, etc.  The hope is Laminar now has Mister X who has experience with SFD and high quality assets.  If he can upgrade the auto gen assets and bring building data into X-Plane's auto gen system it will be a game changer.  There is a rumor that LR is looking into a technology to "parse" orthophotos and use that data to create better procedural generated ground texture that will blend better.  If they are successful, this will provide a big improvement over current Ortho which are inconsistent with color, random cloud, fixed season shade, etc.

Finally, I use the standalone Windows Navigraph chart app instead of using the integrated MSFS panel.  The lag introduced from this integration in MSFS is just too high and not worth it at the moment.  So, I don't miss X-Plane not having direct Navigraph integrations.

I disagree, take a walk around the canary islands you will think you are in Jurassic Park, so is almost all of Europe the PG is much worse than 2020 right now.

Looks like someone was able to use SFD Global with Simheaven in this thread
