Sim Beta 2 - How can it be so unstable/inconsistent?

as I uninstalled FS24.

That's stilly. They fixed the issue.

They would have known had they done the bare minimum testing

The issue was with MS Store. So it wouldn't have come up in local testing.

An unstable beta? Oh dear, that's terrible! And - we're not even getting paid for it?! I'll probably just add fuel to the fire here - but, jeez - unstable beta? Aren't betas inherently unstable?

  • I will explain it to you! Back when 2020 was released, initially there were no public betas. Asobo in house testing was missing a  lot of bugs, and most of us would suffered with bugs between official

  • Maybe it's because it's a "Beta"?

What's wrong with the mouse? I use it all the time.

oops I missed that it was related to VR

I've never really understood the attraction of being an unpaid Beta Tester.

It's the hope that the beta is somehow better than the current version.

If the current version were good, not many users would be attracted by beta versions. Talking about FS24, it seems that the vast majority of the users crave for any update, even alpha or beta updates.

How could they warn MS Store users about something they didn't know would happen?

Are you serious ? ? Come on. You know better than that.

Asobo did not test it before releasing the beta ?

It appears it was an issue with MS Store, since it didn't effect the steam version of the sim.

Yes the BETA is more unstable, but in my experience not badly so. The increased performance (especially in VR!). more than makes up for it.

I fly a Pimax Crystal Light because it has more binocular overlap than say a Meta Quest 3. The stereo 3D effect just snaps into view with no eye strain. On the high end headsets, the new Meganex SuperLight has wonderful overlap. The new Bigscreen Beyond2 does NOT, it is as bad or worse than the Q3.

Everybody has different criteria. A lot of people don't get or are not bothered by eyestrain and so that's not an important issue.

If Asobo would have warned for the dissappearing addons and settings then people could have made backups.

If somebody is going to join a beta, it would be silly not to!

There are a few hundred people working on the MSFS versions. So more than enough of them to test a beta before releasing it to the public.

Doesn't matter how many people and how long they work on a beta, users WILL find plenty more as soon as they use it.

This should not have happened. Period.

Luckily I am not on the beta ….

I joined the beta,  First four flights crashed 15 seconds into the cockpit.  I went into Steam, set beta option to 'none', and was flying in the non beta five minutes later.  when the next SU beta is released, I will set the beta option to 'SU2' and see if my initial problem is fixed.

For Steam users, any show stopping bugs in the beta are no stress at all.

The idea of beta testing is to keep using the product to find all the bugs, not to bail out when you get an issue, and go to the non beta product.

I've been in every 2020 and 2024 BETA pretty soon after they were released. Never sorry I joined, except for the "phantom update" BETA that was released accidentally without permission of the bosses by a couple of Asobo guys. It was a big problem for me, but luckily I never use default MSFS installation locations, so the cure only took under an hour.

Of course a large issue is these Betas are still run very badly with regards to a proper Bug Reporting System and any form of Systematic Testing needs by the developers, it's essentially just a Free For All with the only purpose to give people a chance to see new features & issues fixed earlier than the rest.

It is interesting to se how many people think wrong about what Beta is in software development.
Beta should be considered feature complete and stable by first development team, then QA team, and then it goes to public to catch last bits. This is not beta. This is like "ok code builds succesfully, lets publish it to community to test it".

Its like nobody even tried to run the thing for more than 2 minutes.

Asobo TBM 930 on KSJC runway ready to fly 12 FPS down to 8 FPS when it starts moving.  Warning message about GPU resources. Identical setup prior to Beta 2 gave 50+ FPS

Same runway, same session, same settings Asobo 172  48 FPS and 50 FPS after liftoff.

Asobo 172 take off from KSEE with 80+ FPS - 10-minute flight approach on LOC D 75 FPS down to threshold then 4 FPS finally down to 1 FPS after stopping on taxiway

Shut sim down and restarted it at KSEE with C 172 - 15 FPS on Rwy ready to fly

Shut sim down and restarted it at KSEE with C 172 - 75 FPS on Rwy ready to fly

Using CapFrameX & Intel PresentMon - no difference in GPU VRAM usage between low and high FPS - the only difference is the duration of the GPU queuing which exceeds 500ms at times.   I guess the update did not improve, and in my opinion worsened the GPU/VRAM issue.

The Beta 2 sim does load faster 84" compared to 106" in last stable release.

But... the time to go from Free Flight FLY to Ready To Fly on the runway is wildly variable.  Same airport, same rwy, same airplane - sometimes 35", sometimes 65", and occasionally 200".  Resource usage, including internet, is similar between the various starting times.

???

During SU 1, I had repetitive tests. The appearance of sudden fps drop and single digit fps during take off are almost certainly accompanied by blurry textures from the beginning the sim is loaded. But when the blurry textures are non existent once the sim is loaded, I cannot reproduce the fps drop in any scenarios, including erratic sliders changes (the method I use to trigger fps drop which never recovers until the sim is restarted).

However in this early SU 2 Beta, I haven't seen this issue so far. The Vram usage is also likely lower. But I cant be certain when having longer flights.

An interesting test:
