I get the shimmering too, it’s really bad. I just learnt to put up with it. I get it because I use tobii head tracking, so my image is never 100% still. I noticed that if I disable head tracking, then the shimmering is greatly reduced. I believe VR users suffer the same fate.

May 26, 20251 yr LR must replace the graphics engine. Otherwise XP eventually, 13.0, 14.0, 15.0.... with "new" lighting engine (slight tweaks to datarefs only). And there will always be these graphics issues. Just like some guy trying to hang on their CRT tv. It's time to let it go. http://youtube.com/c/Greazer

Apart from the fact X-Plane has recently started using a graphics engine that can render PBR textures, which graphics engine do you suggest they move to, that is compatible with current art assets of current add ons? It's fine to make criticisms, but without making alternative suggestions, while providing reasons for the change, backed up by examples, it looks as though you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. The graphics engine is being systemically overhauled all the time and as we speak. Community Management for Laminar Research
May 26, 20251 yr I just spent some time in XP12 to generate cumulus clouds, post the screenshots here, compare them with the cloud picture posted by Greazer, and then discuss with him why it's unreasonable to expect that X-Plane will flawlessly reproduce in every detail each one of the 50+ subtypes of clouds existing in real life, taking probably an inordinate amount of development time and FPS performance cost, both of which would be better spent in other areas of the sim. But then I realized I can't be bothered. "Society has become so fake that the truth actually bothers people".

I am flabbergasted at the graphics XP12 is presenting to me. A long standing complaint of MSFS has been the night lighting. Yesterday I took my first sunset flight with XP12. MSFS recently 'upgraded' its sky colours, yet it doesn't come close to what XP12 showed me. From what I have seen in XP12 over the last week, it is MSFS that needs a graphics upgrade. 😉😇 CPU Ryzen 7800X 3D RAM 32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 6000MHz GPU GEFORCE RTX 4090 Monitor AOC AGON AG352UCG UltraWide G-Sync @ 3440x1440 Internal Storage 1TB NVMe PCIe SSD External Storage Three 4Tb HDs

I can't wait to see what they have in store when they finally start making their new scenery cuts and what that would do that will leave a favorable impression. It just gets more interesting. 😃 Edited May 26, 20251 yr by BobFS88

As someone who has purchased every MSFS since FS4 and XP9, I can understand that. I will continue to purchase X-Plane when they release XP14 since the number 13 is considered unlucky. Competition is good but first impressions of XP is warranted if someone has played MSFS 2020/24. Graphically, out of the box, Microsoft's product looks insane. I still marvel at what Asobo has accomplished since taking over the project lead from the Bruce Artwick team. Prior to MSFS they made action and adventure games. I doubt many are real pilots whereas Austin from Luminar is. He knows how planes should react to wind, surface temps and changes. The flight model in the Cessna feels alive whereas the Cessna Skyhawk flight model in MSFS feels more forgiving. I had suggested on the Steam forums that the X-Plane team should consider purchasing a 3D mapping license from Microsoft, Google, Apple to make their flight sim look more appealing. Most users will not go thru the trouble of adding additional pieces to X-Plane when they have to do ZERO with MSFS. The other problem I have with X-Plane is performance. I can get near 60FPS in MSFS 2020/24 with an RTX 3080 and a few graphic tweaks and it still looks incredible. X-Plane 10/11/12 gets me around 28-30FPS with HIGH settings 2xAA and it looks poor in comparison to MSFS. I added SimHeaven scenery packs and it dropped performance a little more. So the experience was a little worse for me. My sense is that the X-Plane team isn't worried about that as they cater to a different audience which tend to be real pilots or people who are serious about general aviation. I would also like to see X-Plane cater to a wider audience. MSFS allows people to easily create a flight plan from one location to the next by zooming in select a runway, zoom out and find another airport on the map. The X-Plane User Interface is basically the same since XP10. it is barebones. So X-Plane has more on it's plate besides graphics to make itself more appealing to a wider audience than just pretty life like graphics.
