Performance issues after SU16 (MSFS 2020)

Featured Replies

Hi all flightsimmers,

Since the SU16 update of MSFS 2020, I have noticed that the performance is very bad. There are a lot of laggs and stutters. Normally with AutoFPS I can maintain a solid FPS of 50, which is also my monitor refresh rate of 50 hz. So it was very fluent and no problems at all. Now I experience on the same flight I did before SU16, a very lot stutters. Were I had 50 fps solid, locked, I have now during cruise and landing it goes down to 30 fps and then to 35, to 40 and back to 30, which caused a lot of stutters. I don't understand that if something works great, why the devs of MSFS 2020, touch things and it becomes as bad as it is now. I really don't understand. The ground textures is bad as well, it is blurry as it seems like it is from MSFS 2024.

My specs are:

7950x3D with RTX 4090 24GB, 64 GB RAM 6000mhz, Nvme 4 TB and Win11.

I have tested many airports and airplanes. Like PMDG 737, 777 en the Fenix BFU variants. All have the same bad performance. Which I did not have before SU16 update.

With SU15 I have almost everything on Ulta, play on 2K monitor, TAA settings, TLOD is normally 50 and above 10.000 ft it is 200, OLOD is 200 normally and above 5000 ft it is 10 (all with AutoFPS 0.4.5.3)

I need help to sort this issue out. Can someone please help me with this issue?
If you need any more questions, please ask me and I will provide all information.

Dear regards
AMSpilot06

Why is it that experiences with Microsoft Flight Simulator (either 2020 or 2024) are all over the place for different people? I do not see bad lags or stutters, my framerates are probably better than I should reasonably expect, scenery object pop in is not really an issue, and I do not see blurred terrain textures when in the air. This is all after the SU16 update. My PC specification is not even close to yours, so I am baffled why this happens. I even have TLOD and OLOD fixed at 250/200 respectively.

I honestly wish that I could help, but why this happens to some people and not others totally baffles me.

2020 after the update is working fine for me.

Mine seems same as before. Did you change anything else on your system since SU16?

I had 2020 CTDs after a SU. I tried everything, re-installation, etc. Cursed Asobo.

It was only when I ran another game which also CTD that reminded me I'd updated my GPU drivers when the SU came out. The fan curves had been reset and my GPU was overheating.

I always love updating drivers, and then seeing what breaks, so I can roll back to the previous one that was working fine.😉

I'd rather get a root canal than update the bios.

Yeah my 2020 seems to be running better than ever with the new recent SU16 update.

I also updated to the most recent driver, no issues for me.

same here with me, and we all know how much I loooove moaning.   The update has been really good.

Im just about to finish a 13  1/2 hour 4 sector day in the Fenix BFU and its been seemless, and dare i say it better than before.

I agree with the others though it seems to be a complete punt as to if you get issues or not with ms2020, I cant use the ini 350 for example no matter what I do. Yet the fenix and pmdg birds work flawlessly.

my advice would be

1. get the updates from the content manager

2. use the cache removal tool

3. using ms addon linker check to make sure you dont have any dupilcate sceneries.

4. if using crome make sure its minmised (on my system if its maximised running behind the sim it causes stutters , god knows why)

5. same as above if using volanta

6. delete scenery indexes and let it recreate them

After stating that I did not appear to be having any issues, I have just noticed that a great number of trees appear to have been culled near certain airports. I first noticed this at Terrainy Studios LGIK Ikaria (seemed to be fewer trees on the hill above the airport, and missing areas directly adjacent to the runway). However, I definitely noticed it this evening at 29 Palms LGMK Mykonos. Now, this area probably does not have a huge number of trees, but it looked really barren and empty to me. It almost gave me the impression of my early P3D days when I was flying over photoscenery with no autogen at all. Mykonos may not be supposed to have lots of trees, but the lack of them compared to before the SU16 update has resulted in a significant downgrade to the visual environment.

Is anyone else seeing this, or do I have a local problem?

A full windows re-install is always a better way to go...

A lot depends on the way the update was applied. Was the original Community folder re-named/moved before running the update? Shaders cache cleared and allowed to re-build once restarting the sim? That can take up to 15mins or more. Was the computer restarted after installing the update? Have your settings reset?
Try renaming your Community folder and then fire the sim up, allowing it to create a new (empty) Community folder and check performance then after verifying your settings.
