  1. ATC sees ground speed. Where I control, because the airport is already at 5,400 feet, the STARs have the planes crossing into approach airspace at about FL190 and, from the west, it's not uncommon to see them at 300+ kts even though they are restricted to 250kts
  2. I'm afraid that pretty much runs me dry of ideas. FSX saves the location of windows in the save flights. Could that information help you? If you are always loading a save flight, could you try starting a fresh flight, or vice-versa?
  3. what does your system display settings window look like?
  4. For testing purposes, have you tried turning weather completely off? (clear skies)
  5. I wish I had the same luck. I received mine as a gift, but the china hat switch was sticking when i pushed it forward instead springing back to center. Since it was already past the store's return period I contacted Thrustmaster. I had good luck communicating with them, first the suggested oiling it, but that didnt help so the said they would send me a replacement switch by mail. That was early May. I haven't received the switch and emailed them again last week but there was not even a response to my email.
  6. Controllers are certified for their positions so typically they won't go following you around. Especially if you're just one guy. Nights/weekends in the area that you're flying is typically the best time for traffic and ATC. I've never flown down there on VATSIM so I can't comment on how much traffic/ATC there is.
  7. It sounds like you're just wanting VATSIM to be a new toy to add into your flying. If that's what you want, it probably isn't for you. But perhaps the reason you get bored with planes is because you're not using VATSIM. Using VATSIM, for many, is a sim-changing experience. VATSIM is far superior to RC or default ATC as long as what you want is realism. VATSIM uses real people, who are using the real procedures, regulations, phraseology to give you an experience that, from a procedures and communication standpoint, are real. VATSIM takes FS to a completely different level, and if the idea is appealing to you, you will find there is a whole lot to learn from proper communications, navigation, procedures etc. I agree that a plane gets boring once you get good at it, but VATSIM fills that intellectual void that most simmers crave. Unlike the artificial ATC you are using, VATSIM is real. You know the other planes around you are actual people. The controllers are real people. You know that what that controller is telling you to do, and they way he tells you to do it, is exactly the same thing that it would happen in the real world. The reason there isn't much VFR on VATSIM is because most pilots dont want to fly VFR or they don't know how. The controllers certainly accommodate you.
  8. You need to let the cool for awhile. Not sure the length of time, I could never get them to cool myself. When I ran into this problem, the only way to clear it was to start a new flight from cold and dark.
  9. If you're using Internet Explorer, don't.
  10. Perhaps the popups are appearing, but they are appearing within the confines of your virtual airdisplay monitor. Try makeing sure that air display is not running on your PC. Open up your display settings and look to see if the virtual second monitor is still there. Take a look in your fsx.cfg file and see if there is a monitor listing for Air Display. If there is, BACKUP YOUR FSX.CFG FILE then remove that entry and restart. My guess is that the popups are appearing within the confines of that monitor because either your computer, fsx or both think it's still there.
  11. Haha, yeah that's what's funny. I did finally buy one of those covers for my -3, just because I have scratches on the glass of the -1 and -2 from shoving it between the seats of my car. No way I'm putting a case on my phone though. My wife has one and it drives me nuts. It (seems like) it doubles the size of the phone and just turns the nice design into a big purple thing. Wifey shattered the screen of the -2 when she tripped over her own feet and it went flying onto the concrete. I bought one of those clear plastic screen protectors and put it on the shattered glass to hold it together. Still works perfectly.
  12. No case for me! That's like putting a tarp over your Ferrari! The shattered screen on the -2 is just character :)
  13. I use all those same factors (plus CI) and it's just as accurate
  14. Well in real life they aren't doing it with the charts either. They are using dispatch programs. I find it incredibly unrealistic to be using the plane's FMC to calculate my fuel for me so I use something else.
  15. If you mostly just fly airliners then you may not like. I sure dont. But for GA flights or a helicopter it's a game-changer and totally worth it. It's also awesome with other games. I use it with the DCS combat sims and it's 10x better then FSX. Imagine doing a strafing run on some tanks and then being able to turn your head to the back as you pass them to see them burn.
  16. Just a reminder this is tomorrow morning. No one has expressed interest in it here but I will still be there.
  17. This Saturday at 10:30 a.m mountain time (1630z) I will be opening the Colorado Springs Approach facility on VATSIM with the goal of attracting rookie VATSIM pilots. That first flight or two is usually a pretty big hurdle for pilots as it can be very intimidating. Especially when something doesn't go as expected. This way you know you'll have an easy and friendly flight where you are encouraged to ask questions. Recommended flight Here is the recommended flight but you are welcome to fly wherever you like. Many VATSIM pilots have never flown VFR so this is a great time to try that out as well. KCOS- KPUB- KCOS IFR Flight Plan: Leg 1: COS3.PUB Leg 2: PUB BRK VFR Flight Plan: Leg 1: PUB (116.7) Leg 2: BRK (112.5) Recommended Aircraft Use whatever plane you like, but this is a very short flight so a twin or single prop would probably be best. Rules: Please read the VATSIM PRC prior to your flight. It's expected that you will have familiarized with the procedures involved. You're not expected to be an expert (none of us are) and you're welcome to ask questions. Know you're aircraft. Don't fly your shiny new NGX if you don't consider yourself an expert in it. No matter what plane you use, make sure you are able to descend or climb to an assigned altitude, fly an assigned heading and track to/from a VOR, and fly an ILS. This may seem obvious, but there are a lot of pilots out there who are enslaved to the GPS/FMC and can't navigate without it. This ends up being a problem on VATSIM because the controllers expect pilots to be able to do these very basic things when instructed. If you didn't understand an instruction, or don't know what the instruction meant, ASK! One of the biggest pet peeves of controllers is a pilot who just says, "roger," and doesn't do what they were instructed to do. PLEASE ask questions and clarify instructions. If there's something specific you want to work on (such as a certain type of approach, holding, etc) please mention it in your flight plan remarks. Please link to this post in your VAs or flying clubs. I want to help gather as many new pilots as I can and will continue to have these training flights for as long as there are pilots participating. Please post here if you're interested, so I know if this is something people are interested in or not.
  18. Actually the video doesn't answer that question...or if it does, it's outdated. After FSK2 was released I added the ability to support sub-folders (the video was made pre-release). So yes - this is what my FSK2 folder looks like in Dropbox: It works awesome!
  19. Hi Daniel - The Austrialian (And every other country in the world) charts are protected by copyright laws which is why you won't find them free in most apps. Australia was one of the countries I contacted early on in hopes of including charts and was greeted with a rather high licensing fee. Far too high for flight simmers. That being said, take a look at OZ Runways. I believe it is the only app available that has the AU charts, however you're looking at paying at least 90 dollars for a subscription. (Jepps app has them I'm sure though) http://itunes.apple....d404403989?mt=8 As I'm sure you have read, you can import PDF and image files from the internet into FS Kneeboard 2 and have them display as seamlessly as the US terminal procedures. In fact I have developed an awesome collection of charts in my Dropbox from around Europe that I use on my many British Airways flights. Here's a vid that talks about it:
  20. If you're the type of person who would buy an Alienware, or even really know what one is, then you're probably not Apple's target audience. Comparing Macs to PCs really doesn't work because Apple isn't trying to 'compete' with anyone so much as do something different but do it well. I predict by the end of summer you're going to be seeing Dell or HP laptops boasting SSDs and "Super Duper HD" screens because they want to keep up. Also keep in mind, that for Apple users, the DVD drive is almost obsolete. Most software is downloaded from the internet, most files are backed up to one of several available clouds and movies are played off the internet. The only thing I have ever used my Mac's DVD drive for was to make backups, but now with Google's Cloud I don't even do that anymore. Once again, Apple is doing what it does best. Targeting the average consumer with products that you can feel and touch. The average person doesn't know the difference between an SSD and mechanical drive, or the difference between memory and hard drive. But an average person can look at the super thin MacBook Pro and the absolutely gorgeous Retina display and instantly know what's better. Plus, the computer physically looks appealing. It's not some clunky black box. Personally, I'm still a PC guy, but it's getting close to the point that I completely switch over. The main reason I haven't is FS. If it were easier to fly and control on a Mac I would probably switch over right away. That would certainly free up some space in the office.
  21. And that would be me.... Yes I have gotten the PMDG 747 into and out of KASE but ONLY with about 5% fuel and little to no pax. A humorous endeavor, but technically possible.
  22. I love the ASE approaches. Don't mess with trying to program this, the FMC wont be able to fly it right. It's a very steep descent, as you saw, and you just need to plan ahead. Be configured to land before intercepting because if you're not you'll never lose enough speed before the runway. I've done both ASE approaches in the NGX without issue but I cheated since I know the airport well and was prepared for the descent. Also try the VOR/DME approach. The procedure turn gives you plenty of time to configure, then make sure you are configured to land when passing DBL inbound. The VOR/DME is normally easier.
