  1. There are many reasons for stuttering, mostly because the frame rate is either too low or there is an undesired level of fluctuation. Items that can cause are, Running out of vram (DX11 - maybe not so for DX12). Maxing out the GPU. Maxing out the CPU. Running intensive and complex aircraft or addins that tend to keep the FPS lower. General advice is to monitor the CPU/GPU usage while on a reproducable test flight and let the monitoring guide the settings. For myself a 30 Hz capable monitor and running P3D @ unlimited with vsync enabled has resulted in the best tuning opportunites for highest detail and smoothest running. From monitoring I now have built a number of custom Display/Profile configurations selectable from the P3D Display Global Settings options where I select the one most suitable for the type of flying I'm performing. You might find the below links of use. And here is a vid of Riva Tuner Statistics Server in action, note the frame rate counter on the RH bottom. And here is my highly tuned P3D v 4.5 instance where I've tuned for the maximum detail use in combo for smoothest running. Tuning is not only the sliders, it also includes P3D config file and GFX drivers and GFX card as well as CPU (e.g. overclocking GPU and CPU). For the most part the sliders tend to affect GPU use apart from Scenery Complexity, Autogen Draw Distance and AI. As usual what I use for settings may not be applicable for others, but the general idea of tuning does still apply.
  2. Probably refering to these keys. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lockheed Martin\ HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v4\ Both keys contain paths to locations used by P3D (version 4 in this instance). Cheers
  3. Hi Folks, OK, so there have been lots of good deals around what with Covid-19 and the generosity of developers and shops. The IRIS Simulations offer in particular was really good, all planes for free. That said mostly are fairly older releases not catering for an x64 P3D, nothing like a challange though and I'm happy to say I've the Jabiru 160~170, Venture MG.1, CT-4F Akala and the Grobs all working just fine in P3Dv4.5 HF3 and all with working sound and installed totally via the XML add-on method. Getting sound working when installed via the xml method was the most problematic. Doug Dawson's latest x64 sound gauge, a Panel.cfg mod, sound.ini mods as well as a custom folders for the specfic sounds referenced by the x64 DD gauge was what it took to get all working, more of a new gauge and sounds location restructure really. Nice freebees and fun to both get working and flying around. The Jabiru @ 11S The Grob off the coast of 11S The Grob and AI shipping, the yellow inflatable is a shadow from Greenpeace. Just an AI Shipping container carrier, if you don'e have AI shipping you should get it, brings the waterways to life with around 1100 AI ships. The CT-4F Akala @ 1S2 The Venture MG.1 also @ 1S2 (it's a weird powered glider) Cheers
  4. What a painful thing to have to do.... Really (with the exception of the xml addon methon) the configuration of P3D is much the same as FSX. And the first thing I do for troubleshooting FSX is to rename the config folders, that way new clean default configs are auto created at next start. Note I said rename the folders, not delete, there is no point to removing the time already spent in setup if it can be easily saved. If all is good then it's just a process of elimination to track down the problem. C:\ProgramData\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v4 C:\Users\<account_name>\AppData\Local\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v4 C:\Users\<account_name>\AppData\Roaming\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v4 C:\Users\<account_name>\Documents\Prepar3D v4 Files C:\Users\<account_name>\Documents\Prepar3D v4 Add-ons P3D also has it's separate installers, e.g. need to re-install the cilent or just to test the latest version bump it's easy to uninstall the client (keeping P3D activated) and reinstall/rollback. Windows 10 also has its own oddities. https://devblogs.microsoft.com/directx/demystifying-full-screen-optimizations/ https://winaero.com/blog/disable-fullscreen-optimizations-windows-10/ Let's not forget outside of the sphere, like AV scanning or automatated backups - confirm your P3D antimalware exceptions and check the backup processes. Lastly check how clean everything is, lots of dust means lack of cooling and potential throttling, I've even saw an instance where the fan has stopped.
  5. Meh, I'm happy with a Ryzen, mine's even an older one, but I hear the new ones are pretty much able to keep on par with Intel in single core results. https://hothardware.com/reviews/amd-ryzen-9-3900x-vs-core-i9-9900k-ipc-shootout The bigger advantage of Intel with regards to flight sims has been a higher overclock ability rate, but that may change with the newer release sims able to span out and use more CPU cores more effectively. My Ryzen was a nowhere near the cost of an equivelent Intel (in Australia at least) and meant I could spend some of my budget elsewhere. And I certainly get some smooth flight out of it. P3D v4.5 HF2 Maximum detail and performance tuning test at Sekiu 11S Cheers
  6. Hi Dane, Cannot help with the HF2 files, I guess LM regard them as different to point releases. Perhaps email LM support? Or maybe someone else can assist? But anyway I'm not seeing any great fps drop with HF3, in fact all seems to be much of a muchness and I have quite a bit of tuning in the prepar3d.cfg (as well as other config files). 10~12 fps would be huge and easily noticable. Perhaps there is a particular config setting giving grief? How about posting your prepar3D.cfg (as a spoiler)? Maybe a set of different eys can help. Cheers Addendum: Comparing a benchmark vid running HF2 compared to HF3 (same benchmark senario) there is a slight drop in fps with HF3. In my case it is about 3 to 5 fps. So yeah, best advice is if HF2 gives no issues then stick with HF2. On Second Thoughts (and further testing): Deleted the shaders, and retested and this time around there was practically no difference between the fps of HF2 and HF3 using same settings and scenario. If there is a difference it appears to be negligable and can be both higher or lower of minor amounts. The additional testing for myself means I'm going to stick with HF3 for the time being (until v5 is updated at bit). Cheers
  7. The NVidia frame rate limiter in the NVidia Control panel never worked for myself (although when accessing the limiter via the NVidia Profile Inspector it did). Otherwise never found it particuarly useful myself given I can vsync @ 30 Hz anyway. FYI: I tested the 445.87 drivers and found the option of Silk Smoothness had been removed. This I noticed pretty much immediately in P3D, rolling back to the 442.50 driver set restored the option of Silk Smoothness. Cheers
  8. Maybe related to Full Screen optomisations? https://devblogs.microsoft.com/directx/demystifying-full-screen-optimizations/ https://winaero.com/blog/disable-fullscreen-optimizations-windows-10/
  9. Does this ship work with v5? https://www.rikoooo.com/downloads/viewdownload/8/779
  10. Heh, you're funny... I especially liked the comment re: the 9 core Ryzen Cheers 😆
  11. You could certainly do the above, the video in my previous post was a 30 Hz vsync output, notice the frame rate counter in the bottom RH corner was maintaining 30 fps as a result of the vsync (P3D was set on unlimited). However you've mentioned your monitor is limited to 59 hz, remembering the frame rate output must also at least match the Hz rate for a vsync to occur. Meaning there is no point to limiting to 33-34 and applying vsync as a vsync cannot occur at 33-34 fps due to the 59 Hz rate of the monitor. There is the option of RTSS to induce a vsync at half the monitor refresh rate, and NVidia drivers have similar types of features, not sure if they work with P3Dv5 though. Taking vsync out of the equation, limiting to 33-34 fps is an option, some use P3D to limit the frame rate, others find the NVidia driver frame rate limiter to be effective. You'll need to trial such options and see if they suit. Using a UHD TV is also something many people run with. They can be relatively cheap compared to monitors and much larger, plus they support various Hz rates and stutter smoothing. You can also throw in GSync and FreeSync monitors which are designed to maintain a vsync in situations of variable frames rates, they usually don't sync down to the sort of low Hz rates needed for P3D but hey with the improved performance of P3D v5 they maybe a viable option. Cheers
  12. Everything is wrong with that statement. FSX does take advantage of multicores and has been since SP1, infact I applied an affinity mask to mine so as to have at least one core that FSX wasn't maxing out @ 100%. Gaming laptops will never beat a well built gaming desktop, there is simply not the space nor power and cooling capacity in a laptop. If there was to be then the laptop would be the size of a desktop... Not to say there is not some good laptops coming onto the market. Cheers
  13. Hi Chuck, There is no right or wrong persay where it comes to setting up for a particular monitor. The basic question would be can the GFX card/CPU display the chosen resolution at a suitable frame rate and if wanting vsyncing can the frame rate meet and exceed the Hz rate. So to vsync @ 59 Hz your P3D would need a frame rate of at least 59 FPS, plus an amount for overhead, e.g. say 10~20% e.g. 66~72 FPS. If your sim can consistantly achieve 66~72 FPS without any frame rate limiting or vsync it would be an ideal candidate for using vsync, which will make the sim fly really smoothly and also limit the frame rate to around 60 FPS to match the Hz rate. Clear as mud??? The Monitor I use is capable of dropping down to 23 Hz and I use a 30 Hz screen mode for P3D with the P3D limiter set to unlimited. A 30 Hz vsync means the frame rate will lock at 30 FPS and given 30 FPS is half of 60 (Hz & FPS), my GPU and CPU only have to work half as hard to keep the rate @ ~ 30 FPS (plus headroom allowance) for the vsync to work. Means I can ramp up the P3D settings as I've got plenty of overhead to spare and can "spend" some of the overhead on higher P3D settings. This video linked below shows a 30 hz vsync and how smooth it is. The vid is P3D v4.5, however the same rules apply to any version and indeed other software and games as well. Cheers :-)

  16. P3D powers this sort of sim https://melbourne.flightexperience.com.au/ It's possible MSFS won't be able to be used for this sort of professional system due to intellectual property licensing rights, which is the reason why ESP originally evolved into existance. Possibly the future might include such an option for MSFS, or LM will introduce their next gen, they've added DX12, they've added TrueSky, they've added Nvidia Water, so tick all those off the list. Licensing is the key word here, every time you add licensed content the cost goes up as those licesing fees have to be paid, usually on a per unit sold. Cheers
  17. The Winjeel is an old Australian Trainer and originaly seated 4, the idea being trainee and pilot pair flying and another trainee and pilot pair watching/learning. That was the idea at least, didn't last long as 4 seater because people don't really learn to fly by watching someone else fly. Ant's rendition of it is pretty good I think. Cheers
  18. I think once the "actual" release is out said dev crews will be able to test and confirm. Time is valuable and too expensive to spend qualifying complex software until there is an actual released to customer version to qualify against. Cheers
  19. Heh, have to agree there, all cooks, no chefs 🙂 My P3D config seems to manage expanding across cores pretty well. This pic is @ 30 FPs vsync'd and core use is pretty spreed. I guess it's all in the configuration. Cheers

    COVID-19 advice

Got toilet paper ??? There's none at my local supermarket and hasn't been for weeks, no paper products at all (tissues, nappies, hand towels etc.) Meat ran out, there was no bread, noodles, rice, pasta, spagetti sauce many many shelves completely empty and are still that way weeks later. Local pharmacy had to ration medicines and there is no hand sanitiser or face masks left anywhere local. Alothough went shopping today and some bread was back on the shelves. Cheers
  21. Woohoo, new PC build time is coming (end of year) and a new AMD Ryzen, motherboard with PCI 4 and NVidia 3000 series GFX sound like just what I want for Christmas 🙂
  22. I don't think the GTN 750/650 are a waste at all, I know I use mine all the time. Actually the F1 750 and 650 used to be separate purchases with a resulting cost increase, and i suppose selling competing products via the Flight1 "store" software reduces costs, increases competition and means F1 gets a slice of the pie no matter which one you buy, but then again they do have to manage the infrastructure overheads. Personally I took advantage of the F1 "Complete" edition and now I have both the 750 and 650 which I use for different types of aircraft e.g. 750 won't fit but the 650 does. I don't have the RXP release, however both the F1 and RXP are GTN 750's and both will use the Garmin Trainer software and its databases for their functionality. I suppose the difference is in philosophy and who was first to market (for P3D), probably the F1 units were first and are more widespread for pre-built installs in various aircraft. The F1 software does have an aircraft installer system that can place a link on the screen to open the unit for those aircraft where there is no dash option. It is also possible to modity the panel.cfg (minimally) so that the key that would open the default P3D GPS unit will instead open a GTN. It is also possible someone somewhere and build a completely modified panel.cfg where the GTN unit will fit in the dash. On this forum Bert Pieke is proably the most knowledgeable person I'm aware of with regards to Carenado aircraft and fitting GTN's into the dash. Send Bert a PM (Personal Messge), ask and maybe point him to this thread. There is also the offical F1 GTN forum which I think has a section for panel configs, you'll need to register for the forum though. Cheers Here area a few pics of the GTN in action, last one is a Carenado using the link on the top LH corner.
  23. I recall not so long ago Jim's annoucement of his diagnosis and the appearance of his picture on his posts. He posted almost up to the end. His dedication to AVSIM and the help he provided will be missed...RIP
  24. There will be one thread to rule them all !!! The Master Control Thread... MCT RULES !! Personally I'm hoping for two things. 1), Improved frame rates where Core0 is not maxed out (essentually when there is a ton of available CPU resources P3D is not utilising towards increasing the FPS). 2), The handling of 3D objects is way better because turning down scenery complexity in order to get the frame rate up means in a lot of cases there is not much to see what with the subsequent lack of custom buildings/objects and lack of décor (so to speak). v5 would have always been planned as DX12, what with Windows 10 being the current MS O/S for the masses now the previous masses OS (win7) has dropped by the wayside. Cheers
