You working on your IFR ticket? It was a lot of fun! Have you done any approaches in IMC yet? If you haven't, its going to be insane when you first do it. However, you will have so much fun; and afterwards you will feel like a real pilot. Good Luck with the ride and let us all know when you pass! ( We know you will!)
I did my 3rd (and last) cross country with my cfii before I was signed off for the check ride. Living near Denver, IFR. weather is something we almost never see. So, imagine my excitement when, despite looking at the forecast the day before that indicated Vfr weather, I saw the METAR for the destination airport (KCOS) indicating IFR. (We hurried up our departure from KBJC to catch the IFR weather down there). !!The 17L ILS at KCOS has some step-down fixes for the loc only approach, which must also be honored on the glideslope (which iis why we picked it, to provide some additional multitasking on the way in- cfii's are cruel people!!!!). When we descended down into the fog, I was told to take off my view limiting device. The sight of emerging above minimums, seeing the approach lights and the rabbit, was such an experience that I couldn't sleep that night when we returned home, what an experience. I see it in FSX all the time, but the real thing just blew me away for some reason....Incidentally, on our climb to 11,000 feet cruise in the c172, with 3 sob, I had trouble maintaining a 500 fpm climb, so I made a call to act (required if 500 fpm can not be maintained). In an ATC environment controlling aircraft in and out of KDEN, I got a few laughs on the frequency......Can't wait to fly the NGX.Bruce Knight.

What flight school do you fly out of at KBJC? Thought about starting my PPL soon.

I doubt they expected 500FPM in a 172 at 11,000Ft! I can't do that in the 182!The first low IFR approach by myself was a real sweat producer for me... Broke out just above 200 feet with heavy rain and a moderate chop! Of course we call sweat "learning lubricant" where I come from! :( Are we getting off point here? Sorry!

Amen to that....my first approach was an rnav into glaveston, texas. I was in the clouds and my instructor told me to take off my hood. It was broken ovc so the clouds looked like they were moving so fast. I looked down and i saw nothin but water. When we broke out...we were.about 5 miles from the airport and in the middle of the ocean....it was erie doing that in a single engine cessna. Are we getting off point.....possibly a little. However, i think all real pilots.no matter what experience one is at can agree that hearin others' stories and wxperiences help us to learn and become better pilots.

As I'm a lowly post-solo student pilot, I've only done one actual IFR approach. My lessons had been scrubbed for the past month due to weather, and I happened to be flying with a CFII for a change. He decided that I should get some flying done, so we went IFR out, VFR on top for airwork, then picked up inflight IFR clearance and got the ILS back into ITH. Broke out at something like 1000' above field elevation, but actual IFR flying was a blast. Especially for the pre-solo me.

Couldn't agree more! Those hangar chats at the airport serve a purpose! To Joseph. Some of the most fun flights I've had were pre-solo with a certain part 135 pilot in all kinds of weather! It was much more interesting when I was still learning the ropes! (Actually, I'm always still learning the "ropes")I'm trying to pass the time here. I can imagine this forum as the lobby of a theater on premier night of a very anticipated film. We're shoved in this general forum being impatient.

I think they won't charge us 150 for the NG. That's waaaay to much, nearly twice as the MD11? I don't think so. Some of us will get it anyway even at that price but, remember that we aren't the "universe" of users. Lots and lots of users won't pay that.if i can put my money on some mark, i would say 100USD. The truth is... this plane will raise the bar on quality and price.. im nearly 100% sure.

Soak up that knowledge buddy! Keep at it and when you solo you will come out of the airplane saying " thats it?". Then a couple hrs later it will start to sink in and then you will say " THATS IT???? THIS IS AWESOME I MYSELF, YEAH ME....I SAID IT, I LANDED A PLANE.... JUST ME YEAH BUDDY!!!!!". believe me, you will think it just like that. with a big smile on your face. Let us know how it goes!!!

That's an expensive 172!$150 would be pushing it beyond my reach, though. $50-$90 is one thing. But with your logic, an hour in my real logbook would be more helpful! 150$ will get me, my friends, and a 182 to Myrtle Beach! :(
It's around $550 upwards per hour for flying lessons here in Australia in an R22 helicopter and you can expect to spend between $35k and $40k just to get a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) for a rotary aircraft. For a Cessna, it's slightly over $200 (about $220 I think) at the (I did say "the", as there is only one) flying school near me. For fixed wing, it's closer to $15k for the PPL. No wonder so few take this as a career option these days and is also why airlines are starting to work with flying academies to share the financial burden with prospective future pilots provided they stay with the airline for a set period of time. It's an arrangement not too dissimilar from that in the Royal Australian Air Force where a pilot is required to commit to a certain number of years with the RAAF as part of hi/her return of service obligation before they can leave if they wish.

How ironic is that, your IFR approaches cancelled due to weather.

Well, I remember renting brand spanking new Mooney's - CS prop, retract 200 mph w/boost - for $30.00 an hour. Now how long ago would that have been? Cessna 150 was $8.50 hr/wet and the 172 was $12.50 /hr wet. I got a DC-3 type rating at Datona Beach Aviation on the GI bill @ $135/hr for 15 hours dual. I think those were the 'good old days'.Ray

Let me be the first in saying I hate you. :( I work two jobs just to afford the $110 hr/wet with $50/hr instructor. Getting from 250 hours to the 1500 I'll need to even be LOOKED AT by a small junk-basket air operation already sounds like an impossible task. If renting a 150 was 8.50 hr/wet I'd probably already be Captain at some regional Airline. :( Those definitely do sound like good days, Ray!

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.
