What add ons are a must?

Featured Replies

Hi all! I havent been active with flight simming since a while but withthe new PMDG NGX its a whole new thing. I am planning to purchase a new PC. Can you recommend the must have add ons for FSX? Thanks. Nic

There are end numbers of add ons Payware as well as freeware. Payware : ASE / Radar Contact / REX / GEX / UTX / PMDG to name a few important ones. And you might want to look at Orbx scenery and other sceneries. Freeware : Plan-G etc... and any freeware scenery or useful tools for flight.

Look at the A2A planes with Accusim and the VRS Super Hornet as well. They're the only other planes that truly compete with PMDG. IMHO, the NGX is still the best aircraft addon. But the Super Hornet and Spitfire come awfully close.

EZdok is a great piece of software.

Are you only interested in the NGX, or do you also fly GA Planes/helicopters?

I just made this list for a friend via email... 1) RealAir Turbine Duke (I also own their piston BE60, it's good but not as neat as the turbine, it's like a small King air 90)http://www.realairsimulations.com/duket10/intro.php?page=duket10_intro 2) PMDG B737http://www.precisionmanuals.com/pages/product/ngx.html 3) Orbx Lancair IV-Phttp://fullterrain.com/product_lancair.html 4) Flight1 C510 Mustanghttp://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=f1mustang 5) Eaglesoft Citation Xhttp://www.eaglesoftdg.com/CitationX_20.htm 6) Flight1 T182 w/G1000http://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=f1t182t 7) Aerosoft Diamond Katana 4x (great starter plane, extremely realistic, maintenance modes, failures, it's nuts, and pretty cheap)http://en.shop.aerosoft.com/eshop.php?action=article_detail&s_supplier_aid=11388 8) Carenado T210Mhttp://www.carenado.com/CarSite/Portal/index.php 9) Lotus L39 Albatroshttp://www.lotussim.com/ 10) Reality XP GNS430W and/or 530W (gauge package only - fits in some planes with ease, others you have to edit into the panel)http://www.reality-xp.com/flightsim/gns530/index.html Scenery: search FSDreamTeam and Flytampa and Orbx

Different people will give different answers. Here are my must have items General Stuff: GEX (ALL), ASE, REX, AES, EVP, UT2, EZDok Aircraft: QW757, CLSMD80, AirbusX Airport Scenery: All Fly Tampa, All FSDT Tweaks: Nick's set up guide and *******' tweaks - pick settings as needed from both sources and do not install FSX until you have read them. You may even waht to read through some of this before you buy a new computer. If GA flying is your style, I would say the ORBX stuff is a must have. If you are going to be flying airliners, they are still top notch products but you may not get as much use out of them.

Must have: FSX Acceleration (If you want carrier ops) REX II Overdrive (The best clouds, sky textures) ORBX/FTX (If it wasn't for ORBX, I would be using FS9) GEX, UTX, FSGenesis Mesh. (This is really NOT a must have, but it will enhance FSX) This is not an add-on, but we sometimes forget that a good yoke and pedals are a must for FSX. I have MUCH more than I really "must have."

  1. All the add-ons previously mentioned,
  2. MegaSceneryEarth California State Complete photo-real scenery (1.2 meter/px),
  3. FS Dreamscapes California Pro-Mesh 5 meter resolution (No longer listed on their web site, anybody have any info?).

Nic, the possibilities with FSX are now thankfully vast and the type of 'must have' addons partly is dependant on your preference . As many have said above, it depends on the type of flying u want to do. I flip between bush type flying to airliners. I go through phases, but I love bothIn my collection, the 'must haves' before I even consider the type of flying I want to do include:Active Sky EvolutionREX overdriveEzdok cameraUltimate Terrain Europe/USA/Canada /AlaskaGround Environment - All versionsTrack IRFor me, that is the bear minimumAfter that - the choice is completely yours. If you're a bush flyer:The Orbx NA and AU series - all versions....and the list goes on....and on...I think a wise starting point is firstly to consider what your budget is and prioritise your preferences. With everything available today it really has become a case of 'how long is a piece of string ?' as the answer to your question. Good luck

Warbirdsim's P-51D "Little Friends" package is a real gem with some fantastic detailing and options. A2A's P-51D with Accusim had better watch out...
