Some thoughts on Flight...

Featured Replies

Shouldn't this have been called "Flight: The Arcade Game"? They've diluted the spirit of flying down to a point and click, yipee my 3 year old can fly, toy that I could go down to Dave and Busters arcade and play. In fact, it reminds me of the three-screen F-15 arcade game they had there. Not very realistic, but hey, it was fun to play. For a short while. And after 5 minutes, that first person shooter game across the way was starting to look a lot more interesting. You know, when I got my pilots license, I was really proud of what I had achieved. The challenge of my flight exam, all those hours of study and practice culminating in mastery of a beautiful machine, constantly changing weather, air traffic communication, reading charts, filing flight plans, the camaraderie, and all the rest of the intricate nuances that flight involves. Those of us who have ever solo'd remember the smile (and the pride) you couldn't wipe off your face for the next week, and the amazing thrill of flying your first pattern by yourself. How about your first long cross country?THAT, to me, is the essence of what Flight Simulator strived to achieve and it was getting pretty good at it lately, despite all its limitations. Thanks, in no small part, to the die-hard simmers and developers who would not be overcome by obstacles in pursuit of furthering the reality. That is what separated Flight Simulator from the rest. It's what kept me interested. And it's what helped it become one of the most successful games in history with an extremely dedicated fan base. When you take out the real meat of Flight Sim, what's left to make it more appealing than every other generic sim created out there? Again, I can only hope that it means there's something better will come out of this for the rest of us once this experiment is over. Now, back to my fully equipped NGX on FSX... blum.gif

I agree wholeheartedly with what you wrote, except for the first paragraph.Flight - as it stands - is a limited geographical area GA simulator. You're talking about the PPL experience of circuits and crosscountry flights, which is just the type of simulation you could run with this new program.Has anyone suggested that the FDE in Flight is worse than FSX? I seem to be hearing that it's improved. The Maule and the Vans would not be at the top of my personal list to fly, but they're both solid GA candidates, built to 'sim' standards by all accounts. The main things missing by the sound of it are traffic and ATC. ATC might be confusing for the primary target audience, but everyone wants to taxi/takeoff/land at an airport with other planes around - particularly heavy jets at PHNL. With luck, this might be something Microsoft might include down the track.

Nice topic Robert. Honestly I was looking forward to SLI/Crossfire capability and taking advantage of more that four cores but all we get is a game. And I use simulators, not games. Long live FSX then...P.S I'm looking forward to that triple-seven definitely! I just hope my 3.4ghz i7 will handle it combined with demanding ORBX scenery...

Interesting post Tony... although I haven't had the financial opportunity to acquire a PPL, I know what you mean in general, since it is a similar warm feeling and beaming smile the first time I took the controls of a Tiger Moth...Rob, it would not surprise me if Microsoft added some form of ATC as an addon in the future, but of course it would most likely cost, via the " in-app store".Of course, I will look forward to the reviews, but I really don't see myself installing it in the near future...Frank, is that a 900 series or 2000 series i7 you have there? Either way, it can easily be overclocked with the right aftermarket cooler and board, the 2000 series even easier than the 900s...I have a 950 running at 4.0, sometimes I push it up to 4.2GHz on air... works well in OrbX Lands with the NGX and JS41, giving me 20s to 30 (external limit) in all places (as long as I am careful with the control panel settings of various OrbX airports such as YBBN), but I have hyperthreading off for FSX...Andrew

Hmm, well I do hope you're right. Call me a pessimist, but it's just looking like there will be too many limitations that will take away from the spirit of what made FS so successful over the years to make this anything worth my while, at least until better content gets developed. And what that better content will entail, when it will be released, and who will develop it, is yet to be seen.

Andrew, I have the Z68 mobo and an i7 2600. I thought it could not be overclocked because I don't have the "k" version of the 2600.Frank

You can get a small oc by adjusting the base clock, but it's very limited.

Yes I knew that but obviously I can't reach 4GHZ. I might sell the 2600 and get a 2600k and a good aftermarket cooler.P.S that Saitek yoke mod is amazing by the way, but I don't feel like voiding the warranty...Frank

Good idea on swapping the CPU but go for the 2500k, fsx won't know the difference

  • 2 weeks later...

I just read that article someone pointed out and basically this is how I think it went down. The guy in the interview had asked Q: "I thought the ACES studio was fully shuttered back in 2009? "A: The reality was inside the company there were already efforts underway to bring that core expertise back together with a new mandate of how they could move forward." Basically Microsoft said hey we want to head this direction with our new simulator/game. We want to go mainstream and generate extra revenue by creating our own add-ons. Instead of letting simmers fly the whole world we'll charge them per map pack and extra planes. ACES studio didn't like this new idea which in turn lead to the so called "lay-offs" Microsoft got there way and today only a third of the ACES team is on the "Flight Team". Microsoft is exspecting 20-30 million people here in the next few years to be using Flight, it's a game that's how it's being marketed don't be suprised if you see it on the 360 in the next 2yrs. They even think it will out perform Gears of War 3!! Wow is all I got to say.

The lights are dimming on FSX and only getting brighter for XPX.

If it hasn't already been mentioned elsewhere, MS Flight is available for download now (for ones who are interested).

Learning to use and getting use to FSX!

Flight is a bunch of garbage. It's an insult to the flight sim community and our hobby.Microsoft might as well slap us with one hand and stretch out the other for our wallets. No thanks, Mr. Gates! (he probably had little to nothing to do with this actually)

Well Microsoft have really messed it up this time... That is all I have to say

Matthew Marshall (PPL)

I like it from the perspective of getting people into a flight sim. It does teach some good techniques - such as using elevators to control speed for landing...Remember we are not the target market. More people into that flight sim = more people that will "graduate" into our hobby. ;)

MS flight is nothing more than a video game, even a three year old can play it quite well. There is nothing like simulator in it, even visuals ain't as good as orbx, rex or PMDG. Surely, no one would be interested in it. FSX rules and will rule infinitely. Looking forward to PMDG 777!
