B777 - Virtual cockpit only / no 2D panel?

Featured Replies

I see a lot of speculation here about 2D panels. The 777 won't be a complete 2D-less airplane. I don't work at PMDG, but Robert and the team already confirmed that he 777 WILL have little pop up 2D panels, like the J41 (and many other planes out there) has, for things like the CDU, MCP, radios, sreens (probably) and a few other stuff, but it'll NOT feature a full set of 2D panel. Items like the forward panel and throttle quadrant will be left out. Just search the forum. IIRC, there's an official topic about 2D panels lost somewhere in the pages of the General Forum. You know... If Robert or Ryan or anyone else from the team shows up, they'll tell you to stop the I like/I don't thing on 2D panels. We do have to respect each other's preferences. If you don't like the 2D, that's fine. There's no need to try to convert the 2D lovers like if it was a religion or something. The thing is from now on PMDG won't include a full set of 2D panels, but they'll still leave the simple ones in the pack.

No, there isnt. There is no way to get rid of some of the head movement. Its hardcoded into the executable. I fly many planes in the VC, but I prefer 2d. How hard is that to understand?
I see no head movement at all in the VC!

Martin, watch very closely as you change headings. The view point shifts a little bit. A good example to see this is the MD-11. Sometimes you can see the autobrake knob and other times its blocked by the speebrake lever and that will change as your heading changes. It's not like the dynamic head movement but the viewpoint does shift.

+1 for youPilots that have setups like yourself are really going to be on the short end of the stick when the 777 rolls out.I really do feel sorry for you guys. It's too bad PMDG is pulling the plug on simpits like the one above.

I mostly use FS9 (and the PMDG 777 will be for FSX), but it seems to me it wouldn't be that difficult to construct a 2D panel from one of the many existing freeware 777 panels, then substituting the gauges from PMDG for those that come with the panel, and adding pop-up windows for things like the FMC, overhead, etc. It's much easier to modify a 2D panel than a 3D panel, since for a 3D/VC cockpit the correct switches and gauge placement have to be hard-wired into the visual model.I don't think that the PMDG folks would be bent out of shape by such a third-party undertaking, since the user would still have to own the PMDG 777. It might well add to their sales. And of course anyone who created such a panel would need to make it very clear NOT to go to PMDG for support. So everyone would be happy!Just a thought.Mike

It's a fairly safe bet that you could never distribute such a mod, if it's even possible with their gauges.A while back someone was working on new textures for the 744 vc & that came to a halt due to Eula issues.

Actually in the fsx.cfg there is this[DynamicHeadMovement]HeadMoveTimeConstant=1.000000LonAccelOnHeadLon=-0.020000LonAccelOnHeadPitch=-0.010000MaxHeadAngle=5.000000MaxHeadOffset=0.300000RollAccelOnHeadLat=0.010000RollAccelOnHeadRoll=0.100000YawAccelOnHeadLat=-0.100000I have not tried anything with it but I THINK zeroing them will make a static view

I am sorry to say that editing these values will not get rid of the hardcoded head movement

No matter the news is true or not, I think 2D panels are very important for many flight simmers. Today there are still a lot of people flying with their 2D panel, because of computer performance, better usability and better efficiency. Not everyone has a powerful hardware especially for PMDG products, which requires even more hardware resources. As a single pilot in FSX, 2D panels helps me do anything pretty fast by getting more information than 3d just on one screen(without switching views). Anyway, VC-only is not a good idea for many simmers, and I highly suggest PMDG to make a good panel.
