B777 - Virtual cockpit only / no 2D panel?

Featured Replies

I certainly do not find 3D has the clarity and ease of use as the 2D panel. Also, on lowly hardware the 2D has much better FPS. I haven't tried this EZCA or whatever it is yet. I mean, if I could get exactly the same perspective on the panel as 2D, and read everything just as clearly, then maybe it would be okay. But still - as I said, it's sort of impossible if you haven't got very good hardware to fly a PMDG with a 3D cockpit.Cheers,Rudy

Why would you do this to us, PMDG... How could you...

The age of 2d panels is over. Time to embrace the virtual cockpit.Of the last three add-on planes I have bought, none of them have 2d panels, so it is not just a PMDG thing. It is a very real trend, and one that allows developers to focus on other things, rather than spend the time and effort to put together a 2d panel that won't get much use.

I agree. As someone said above, some pop-up panels for MCP, CDU, or even the lighting panel may be quite useful, for me at least, but don't don't see any need for them to spend more time with full 2D copies of the virtual cockpit.

I think the use of a 3D panel for the Boeing 777 is a good thing. With the good work PMDG put into the 737NGX, I don't think the 777 will be disappointing. But remember, PSS came out with the 777 with a VC and back then, you didn't have EZDok and TrackIR. I forgot what program it was called, but you could move around the cockpit and cabin in VC mode and it took a little getting use to, but it was fun. BRING IT ON PMDG!!! :(

Who need unrealistic 2D!! when you can have so much fun and reality in VC,,get on with it and move on

Certainly, you make good sense, and thus I agree.Pop ups still serve a purpose. I was in the habit, coming from planes like the Level D 767, where the FMS in the VC was static, that I tended to always manipulate the FMS through the CDU popup. However, with EZDok, and now that I fly the NGX almost exclusively, I find I don't even need that anymore. It is nice to have, use it on occasion to open doors and things from an exterior view. But 2D panels, just doesn't make sense anymore.

Its not my idea of realism when the camera moves a bit and my mouse pointer moves out of the clickspot and i have to fumble with the mouse to be able to manipulate a knob. Thats highly unrealistic. The function of the 2D panel is more realistic than the function of the VC. The graphics of the VC are more realistic than the graphics of the 2D.

That sounds more like a problem with how you have your sim setup rather then a VC problem. TrackIR and the pause function solved the problem for me, although I am so used to TrackIR now that I am comfortable with using flightdeck switches without pausing. You should probably have a browse through some of the VC videos on Youtube.

Then disable VC head movement in the CFG.I have.

I don't even use the pop up CDUs any more unless I REALLY need to work on the FO's unit simultaneously...Then again, i don't have a full cockpit simulator set up with additional dock monitors and so on... just a yoke, throttle combination, pedals, and a monitor...Would be nice to run on a wider monitor for that "being in the cockpit" feeling a bit more, but I can live with the 1600x1200 20" unit I currently have...A

There's one type of movement that is hardcoded and is impossible to disable

He's right. It's a weird circular motion that happens when you turn the aircraft, even when you fully disable the head motion in FSX.cfg. Ryan commented on this problem once and said it's impossible, as far as he knows, to get rid of this.
